Chambers County investigators have charged a 19-year-old man and are preparing to file papers to have his 16-year-old girlfriend certified to stand trial as an adult in connection with the fatal stabbing of a Winnie man who had tried to help the teen-age couple.
Devan Meeks, 19, of Sabine Pass and the girl had fled in a stolen pickup truck to Muskogee, Okla., where his father lived, after 43-year-old David Davis was killed and his house set on fire on July 6, investigators said.
The couple has acknowledged being present at the time Davis was killed, but each blames the other for the stabbing, investigators said.
At the same time, neither did anything to save Davis or call authorities, said Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive, describing the the pair as more like Bonnie and Clyde than Romeo and Juliet.
Meeks has since been extradited to Texas and is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bail. Besides the murder charge, he also faces an auto theft charge and has an earlier pending charge for illegal drug possession.
His girlfriend, whose name is being withheld since she is a juvenile, initially was taken into custody as a runaway. She, too, had an earlier drug conviction that had resulted in her being sent to boot camp and placed on a strict curfew.
"Once we get the murder charge filed against her, we will begin the certification process," said LaRive. "That will require a psychological exam. Then there will be a court hearing and the judge will decide whether to do it."
An autopsy found that more than one knife was used in what investigators contend was an angry, "vicious" attack against Davis. His body was pierced by multiple wounds to the head, neck and torso, including one that severed the artery near his heart.
Although Meeks ran off with 16 year old Melina Perry, this one is claiming to be his gf. She is obnoxious.
Damn. She is messed up. Guy dumped her and she's all shoutin' about his innocence: "Devan Meeks is NOT guilty! He has NOT killed ANYONE!! I love him! That's my family! So no 1 better talk shit on him!!! I'll seriously make you wish you never would have said anything! THAT'S A FUCkING PROMISE!!"
I hope she shows up here so I can talk shit on him.
