Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg told Obus that Caban was the "mastermind behind the plan" to sear the torso of Samir "Sammy" Sara, then 23, for having sex with her once in 2004 and never calling her again.

Caban enlisted new boyfriend Robert Testagrossa to help brand a four-inch-high "R" on Samir's abdomen in October 2006, the prosecutor said. She said Caban lured the former lover to a hotel room, where Testagrossa and another man grabbed him.

Blumberg said the men used a Taser to immobilize Sara in a room at the Chelsea Inn while Caban laughed at his distress and kicked him while he was down.

The branding "iron" was actually a length of metal wire fashioned into a "R" — heated, and applied to Samir's torso, said Tracy Golden of the Manhattan district attorney's office. She said prosecutors did not know what the "R" stood for.

Caban and Testagrossa, 27, pleaded guilty to assault in August 2007 in exchange for five-year sentences. Testagrossa was sentenced in February and Caban, a photography student, was allowed to graduate from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan before going to prison.

Blumberg said Sara will have forever a tragic memento of his encounter with Caban.

November 5, 2006 -- The jilted lover accused of plotting to brand an "R" into the flesh of her former flame is a troubled but talented photographer who was arrested once before following a fight with a high-school boyfriend, according to friends and a neighbor.

They said Kristina Caban, 21, battled depression and began seeing a shrink two weeks before she allegedly convinced two male friends to ambush ex-lover Samir Sara at a seedy Chelsea hotel room and sear the scarlet letter into his lower back.

She's currently out on $35,000 bail.

"She told me she'd been undergoing psychological analysis," said longtime pal Lisa Sheikowitz, who went to Minisink Valley HS in upstate Slate Hill with Caban, and was briefly her lover when the two were teens.

"She lets life get to her. If things aren't perfect, they suck. She's is a very passionate person, and she doesn't let things stop her. But she looks for love in all the wrong places."

Caban - a student at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan - got arrested about four years ago after she squared off with a high-school beau named Derek, her friend said.

"She did something," Sheikowitz said, without providing details.

"It was physical. It was big at the time. I couldn't believe she did it. She was 16 or 17. The police in State Hill arrested her."

State police confirmed they once arrested a Kristina Caban, but would not provide specifics.

Police sources say her new boyfriend is Robert Testagrossa, who allegedly was one of the attackers who branded the bound Sara at the Chelsea Inn hotel on Oct. 22.

A man at Testagrossa's East 25th Street apartment yesterday said, "There will be no comment today." Leaving his building later, again without comment, a man who would not acknowledge whether he was Testagrossa boarded the subway for Williamsburg and then climbed into a silver car bearing Connecticut plates.

One neighbor said he was not surprised to read about the allegations against Caban, claiming that the student's mom, Vasili, and dad, Rafael, were prone to outbursts of rage.

"I call it the 'house of horrors'; they're constantly screaming and yelling," said Albert Daula, a next-door neighbor of nine years who lives about 100 feet from the Cabans on Lakeview Avenue in Slate Hill. "These people have bad karma."

Three years ago, Rafael was arrested after he pointed a shotgun at the heads of three youths who knocked over his mailbox, Daula said.

Caban, a former city corrections officer, became enraged after the three boys drove up to his mailbox and knocked it over, he said.

So Rafael came out with a gun, forced them out of the car and called the cops, he said.

"I was like, holy crap, what the f - - k," said Tim Lempka, 23, one of the boys who hit Caban's mailbox three years ago. "He said, 'If you move, I'll kill you, just shut the f - - k up!' "

"He's crazy," said Lempka. "[Kristina] learned by example"

Rafael and Kristina often fought, said a friend of the daughter, Josh van Strander.

"She had a temper, and so did the father, so there was always tension between them," he said.

The mother almost never ventures out of the house, but screams curses at neighbors if they walk their dogs in front of the Cabans' property or look into the home, Daula said.

The Caban family did not return calls for comment.
