Bizarre details have emerged in a car wreck that left an 8-year-old boy dead Friday night on Lakota Road in northern Culpeper County.
A felony warrant filed in General District Court by the Virginia State Police says driver Fielding Taylor Kines, 38, of Remington, “picked the 8-year-old off the ground and threw him in the trunk” after the crash.
The boy, Remington resident Orion Bickings, was the son of Kines’ girlfriend, who was not in the car. It is not clear if Bickings, who was ejected and died at the scene, initially survived. Police say he was not wearing a seat belt.
The warrant, written by Trooper J.K. Hathaway, also states that Kines drank vodka after the crash. In addition, Hathaway wrote, Kines admitted to consuming two mixed drinks before the accident but couldn’t remember what kind.
“When asked about taking the time to consume alcohol after the crash when he had a critically injured child, he said he was shaken up,” the trooper wrote, adding that none of the nearby residents — who were the first to call for help — observed Kines consuming alcohol.
“He had an extremely strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person, glassy bloodshot eyes and was very unsteady on his feet,” Hathaway wrote.
According to the VSP, Kines was eastbound about a mile west of Clover Hill Road around 10:20 p.m. Friday when he apparently lost control of his 1999 Acura four-door. The car ran off the left side of the road, went over an embankment and rolled several times before striking a wooden fence and landing in a field.
The warrant states Kines may have tried to hide the severity of the accident and the boy’s injuries from police and witnesses.
Kines and Bickings’ 5-year-old sibling, who was in a car seat, were not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.
Kines, who is being held in Culpeper County Jail, faces a felony charge of DUI third offense, felony manslaughter and misdemeanor driving on a suspended license. His court appearance Thursday was continued to June 12 at 1:30 p.m.

He picked him up and put him in the fucking trunk, then had a couple drinks??? WTF?? Was he hoping nobody would know the boy was even in the car? The boys 5 yr. old sibling was not hurt so I bet he figured I wont get charged if they don't know the kid died so I will hide him in the trunk. Fucking moron.
From what I gather reading some other articles, it appears the boy was injured in the crash and instead of seeking medical attention he stuck him in the trunk. I don't know if they boy was dead from the wreck or not getting medical attention. Either way was a stupid asshole.
