After her mother was charged with killing her father, a 7-year-old Miami girl endured another long-running tragedy, police say: She was starved and tortured for months while living with her uncle and aunt.
Miami detectives say aunt Felicia Watkins, 37, would squeeze the girl's fingertips with pliers, whip her with an extension cord and duct-tape her hands and force her to squat in a corner for hours.
The punishments were always for taking food from the kitchen, police said.
The abuse was discovered April 8 when a teacher at her school noticed the girl could not grasp her pencil because of her swollen fingers. DCF, which had no contact with the family before, was called. So were police.
According to police, Watkins rarely gave the girl meals. The only food she ate was the cafeteria lunch at school, police said.
The girl was so hungry she was sometimes caught stealing juice from Height's bedside as he slept, she told police.
On one occasion, she stole a package of cookie dough from the refrigerator. But not knowing how to bake the cookies, the girl microwaved the package.
It exploded.
''She didn't know. She was just hungry,'' Detective Cepero said.
Police say punishment usually entailed beatings with an extension cord. Or Watkins would use duct tape to bind the girl's fists, order her to stick her arms out straight and squat in a corner for three or four hours, police said.
The girl told police that Watkins ''also pinches fingertips with pliers as a deterrent to sneaking snacks from the kitchen,'' according to an arrest report. Detectives say they believe the abuse went on for months.
Her body bore ''countless loop-like marks on her back, torso, arms and legs. The marks appear to be in different stages of healing, including places where the skin was broken,'' the report said.
The allegations of abuse came to light only about two years after the 7-year-old girl's mother, Latressa Height, 36, was charged with first-degree murder. She was accused in November 2006 of killing the girl's father, Larrie Jazzy Abernathy.

Maybe its because my daughter is only one year younger than this girl, but this is one of the few stories that actually brought tears to my eyes.
Can you imagine being that young and forced to fend for yourself and the only adult around abuses you?
That Ronald McDonald looking bitch could afford to skip a few meals herself, she didn't have to starve that little girl. It was out of plain old cruelty.
The good news is, her own daughter was taken into custody by CPS too.
