Mauriel Mercado leaves her 2 year old in car while shopping at the mall.
SACRAMENTO – An Elk Grove couple have been arrested on suspicion of leaving a 2-year-old boy inside a parked car Friday evening while they went shopping at Arden Fair mall, authorities said.
Authorities booked Mauriel Mercado, 20, and Derek Garcia, 22, on felony child endangerment charges. They have since been released, according to Sacramento County online inmate information.
Steve Reed, head of security at Arden Fair mall, said the couple – the mother of the child and her boyfriend – left their small, dark-colored Honda Accord parked in front of Macy's shortly before 5:30 p.m.
Passers-by spotted the child inside the car shortly after 6 p.m. after the boy had apparently set off the car alarm, Reed said.
They alerted mall security and one of the passers-by discovered an unlocked door and took the child out of the car. Reed said the windows were up and the child was sweating and looked "scared to death."
"It's fortunate that we have some observant shoppers," Reed said.
The couple were arrested when they returned to the car, Reed said.
I read the front page, Mauriel Mercado + Derek Garcia = Stupid. It irritates me.
If you're reading this, I am judging you for being dumbass. You're lucky that your kid did not die from the heat or someone kidnap him. If you think he will be ok with the sunroof opened, then you're fucking idiot. Want my advice? Next time you want to go to mall without your little boy, leave him with your family...or drop him off at daycare to have a whole day by yourself. That's what smart people do. Ohhh...wait, you can't get him back any time now. I hope not for long time.
