Mark Castillo kills his 3 young children at a hotel.
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A man killed his three young children at a downtown hotel Sunday, then called the front desk to report the killings, police said.
Mark Castillo, 41, of Silver Spring, called the desk at the Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor at Camden Yards at about 1:15 p.m. Sunday and said he had just killed his two sons and daughter, said police spokesman Sterling Clifford. Police identified the children as Anthony, 6, Austin, 4, and Athena, 2.
After hotel security called police, Clifford said officers went to a 10th-floor room and found three children dead and Castillo with minor cuts that appeared to have been self-inflicted, Clifford said. He did know how the children were killed.
Castillo was taken to a hospital for treatment of the cuts and is in police custody.

I am afraid that it might be. It seems Castillo and his wife were fighting over custody of the children. He decided to settle the issue himself. The sorry coward couldn't even do the right thing. :grrrrrr:

They should have saved the poor grieving father the long trip down on the elevator by just tossing his ass out the 10th story window. I'm guessing he still wouldn't have had time to escape, even if the cops took the stairs after pitching the sorry bastard. Fucking dick!

A Montgomery County man charged with drowning his children told a judge yesterday that he has been trying to plead guilty to the crimes for five months but that his public defenders have blocked him from doing so.
Mark Castillo asked the judge to permit him to fire his public defenders and represent himself.
The judge put the case on hold for 10 days so that court medical staff could determine whether Castillo is competent to stand trial, and if so, whether he's competent to represent himself. Once that happens, a new trial date will be set.
...
During the hearing yesterday, Castillo complained that his public defender was withholding his mail and preventing his wife from visiting him in jail.
He said that his lawyers had lied to him and were "BS-ing him." At times, he seemed to be crying.
His lawyer told the court that Castillo was under the "misconception" that his lawyer had control over his visitors and mail.
Castillo told the judge that three public defenders have attempted to speak to him at various times, but that he rebuffed their efforts.
The Montgomery County man accused of drowning his three children one by one in a Baltimore hotel bathtub told investigators that he used a stopwatch to time their 10-minute submersions and that the two older children, ages 4 and 6, struggled as he held them underwater.
Castillo stabbed himself repeatedly in the neck with a steak knife and swallowed upward of 100 tablets of Motrin and Aleve. At one point, he called the front desk for permission to check out late to give the pills more time to take effect.
Castillo has told investigators that he is evil and that he wants to be put to death.
In late 2006, Mark Castillo told his wife that the worst thing he could do to her was kill the children. By early this year, Mark Castillo was filing a string of legal requests in Montgomery courts. On March 25, he asked the court to "punish" Amy Castillo "for her games." In two or three days, according to sources, Castillo had hatched a plan to kill his children during his visitation, using the Internet to book a hotel room in Baltimore.

The man accused of drowning his three children in a hotel bathtub was zapped with a Taser in a Montgomery County courtroom yesterday after he told a judge that he was "done" with a hearing related to his divorce, then struggled with deputies trying to subdue him.
Mark Castillo, 42, had just raised one of many objections -- almost all of which were overruled -- when he abruptly stood up and said: "I'm done, your honor. I'm done."
As he turned toward the door of the seventh-floor courtroom in Rockville, three deputies forced him back into his seat and tried to handcuff him. When Castillo resisted, a deputy shot him in the shoulder with a Taser.
[...]
He displayed a range of emotions in court -- sometimes politely and intelligently questioning the judge on legal matters, and other times sobbing, closing his eyes and refusing to acknowledge direct questions. He seemed especially concerned whether documents were originals or copies, at one point asking his wife to tell him whether the date on a piece of paper had been handwritten or photocopied.
When she responded that it had been written, he said, "Gotcha, hon," then began a tirade after being chastised by the judge.
[...]
With the judge prepared to finalize the divorce, though, Castillo dropped another bombshell:
"Before you grant it," he told the judge, "I would like to kiss my wife one more time."
Amy Castillo let out an exasperated laugh as the judge seemed to briefly consider the matter. He ultimately rejected the request and granted the divorce.

I find his insanity plea's pretty laughable, he continues to be his own lawyer in his courtcases but trys to plead insanity ??? WTF!!! Ohh well guess the old saying he has a fool for a client is true.
He just like being the center of attention and killed his kids to be that and to get back at the EX. What a sad sad fucktard he is.
This doofus has the system on a chain and is yanking it for all it's worth. What a waste of space, time, and energy... to say nothing of money.

An attorney for the man accused of drowning his three children in a bathtub at a Baltimore hotel said in court that -- for the second time -- her client would invoke Maryland's version of the insanity defense.
Mark Castillo withdrew such a plea at an earlier proceeding, saying then that he and his attorneys "just don't agree on the same defense."
In Baltimore Circuit Court on Tuesday, he appeared to have changed his mind. As the attorney explained to him that a plea of "not criminally responsible" would delay the start of his trial, Castillo indicated that he understood. "Yes, ma'am," he said several times.
In the past, Castillo has sobbed through court proceedings or refused to participate. He has suggested at times that he would like to plead guilty and receive the death penalty. On Tuesday, he appeared composed.
The judge ordered that Castillo submit to a psychological evaluation before his new trial date of April 28.

Mark A. Castillo, 43, is charged with first-degree murder in the March 2008 deaths of his children, 6-year-old Anthony, 4-year-old Austin and 2-year-old Athena. His attorneys contend that he is not criminally responsible for the slayings — Maryland's version of an insanity plea.
Castillo told police he killed the children and tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the neck with a steak knife and swallowing pain pills.
Castillo has a history of mental illness, according to testimony and court records. He had been involved in a custody dispute with his former wife, a pediatrician, and told police he was motivated by the divorce.
Dr. Amy Castillo, the defendant's former wife, was in court for part of Tuesday's proceedings. She declined to comment through her attorney.
"After 18-plus months since the tragic crime, we're just very pleased that the trial is actually going to get started," said the Rev. Ezekiel Wharton, a close family friend who is acting as Amy Castillo's spokesman. "This will give an opportunity for Amy to have another step towards closure from the tragic event."
Jury selection was not expected to begin until Wednesday afternoon.
Quote:
Tuesday afternoon was spent reviewing questions for potential jurors and arguing a motion to suppress statements made by Castillo to police and to the trauma surgeon who treated him after the suicide attempt.
The surgeon, Dr. David Gens, testified about treating Castillo for five neck wounds, one of which caused significant blood loss. Under questioning from prosecutors, Gens recounted what Castillo told him about the wounds.
"He stated that 'I tried to kill myself, but I didn't do a very good job, so I tried again,'" Gens said.
Castillo's attorneys are trying to prevent his two statements to police from being admitted as evidence at trial. Prosecutors played a tape of the first of those statements for the judge Wednesday to verify its authenticity. The jury has not yet been chosen.
Asked by homicide Detective Raymond Yost why he killed his children, Castillo let out a long sigh before describing a custody battle with his former wife.
"We've been going through an extremely hard divorce. ... My wife had denied my visitation," Castillo said. "I felt like I didn't want them to be in this world anymore."
Castillo described how he took his children to the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore and then checked into a Marriott hotel downtown.
"My plan was, after we had a good day, to take their lives," Castillo said.
Castillo ordered room service and distracted his sons with video games as he took Athena into the bathroom.
"I began her bath, and I held her underwater for, I don't know, 10 minutes," he said. "I dried her off and put her in bed."
He described repeating the process with the two boys. The order in which Austin and Anthony were killed was not clear from his statement.

Castillo has behaved erratically in court in the past but was calm as the tape was played. He has a history of mental illness, including a diagnosis of mood disorder and narcissistic personality disorder, according to court records.
