(WXYZ) - A Warren mother is in protective custody at a local hospital after police say she tried to kill herself and her two children by setting her house on fire.
Warren Police say 32-year old Tanya Laura Friedly has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and one count of arson of an occupied dwelling.
Friedly was arrested Tuesday night at a local hospital after it was determined that the fire at her home on the 11200 block of Engleman may have been set intentionally.
Investigators say Friedly visited her children’s school Tuesday morning and signed them out for the day, indicating they had a doctor’s appointment. Upon returning home with her children, she attempted to incapacitate them with prescribed medication.
The arrest report goes on to say that shortly before noon, Friedly went to her upstairs bedroom where she intentionally set her bed on fire while her son and daughter were in the living room on the first floor.
Once smelling and observing smoke filtering throughout the home, the 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter were able to escape from the burning home on their own. Prior to exiting the home, the son was able to retrieve his mother’s cell phone, which he used to call 911 for assistance. Friedly was also rescued from the burning home by several concerned citizens.

A Warren woman accused of drugging her children before setting her house on fire was ordered to stand trial after a judge decided she had regained mental competency.
Prosecutors and Tanya Friedly's attorney in March accepted the findings of a psychiatric evaluation that the 33-year-old Warren woman was not able to understand the charges.
But following treatment, attorneys agree Friedly has regained competency.
[..]Defense attorney David Pietroski said that since the incident, Friedly has been receiving treatment for anxiety and depression, which explains how she regained competency.
Friedly was found mentally ill, but not enough to free her of all culpability of the charges, he said.
He said he was in negotiations with the prosecutor's office, but didn't rule out a trial.
MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. -- A Warren woman has pleaded no contest to charges she drugged her children before setting the house on fire.
Thirty-three-year-old Tanya Friedly pleaded no contest Friday in Macomb County Circuit Court to arson and two counts of assault with intent to murder.
She will be sentenced Oct. 15.
Prosecutors said Friedly took her 14-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter out of school early on Nov. 18, 2008, and slipped a sedative into their hot chocolate before setting the house on fire.
The children escaped and neighbors pulled Friedly from the building.
Do these people never think of sending the kids to live with the other parent? Or plain old letting someone know how bad things are and seeking help?
I could never imagine a situation bad enough to off myself, and take anyone else with me. Taking your own life is bad enough, but taking someone else's makes you a monster.
I do hope the children are somewhere safe now and not in the custody of their maniac mother. And if they are with her I hope she has had some help since her desperate act and a whole lot of supervision since......
Thank heavens that son of hers didn't drink all his cocoa, is all I can say.
