ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Twenty-seven employees of the local Head Start pre-school program have lost their jobs after checks of criminal records, family ties to management and whether they had completed required child-care training.
Six of the 27 were let go after criminal background checks by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement noted offenses including grand theft, aggravated battery and aggravated assault, said Deloris Johnson of the Agricultural and Labor Program Inc.
“The terminations were not punitive in nature,” said Johnson, chief executive officer of the Winter Haven-based nonprofit that oversees Head Start in St. Lucie County.

The terminations were necessary, she said, after criminal background checks completed Oct. 30 revealed six out of 172 local Head Start workers were unqualified under Florida law.
Johnson said she did not know why criminal records of the six were only recently discovered. She said the Florida Department of Children and Families licenses Head Start centers and referred the question to that agency.
But that agency put the onus on Head Start.
“It’s the responsibility of the centers to make sure that the background screening of their staff is done properly,” said Cheri Steffer, community relations manager for DCF’s local Circuit 19.

Thirteen additional workers were let go for having close relatives working in management at St. Lucie County Head Start. Johnson sent an Aug. 25 form letter to all her company’s employees asking they confirm whether or not they were related to any other employees.
“Some (had previously) disclosed it, some didn’t,” Johnson said. “If they were a mother, a sister, uncle, first cousin — a direct blood relation, keeping them would have been a violation of our own policies.”
These 13 are eligible to return to work in jobs not managed by relatives, she added.
Eight more Head Start employees were let go for not having mandatory child care training.
“The training was made available to them,” Johnson said. “They did not avail themselves of it.”
Repeated phone calls to local Head Start Director Mary Jones were not returned by Friday afternoon.
I am not sure if this belongs in this forum but man, it just pissed me right the fuck off. This agency (dcf) is so rife with corruption. Background checks need to be completed BEFORE employees start work. These members of management that hired their family members or assisted the hiring of family members need to be disciplined.
There's no excuse for this shit.

I don't live in Florida but I was considering HeadStart for my kid soon because out district doesn't offer Pre-K and she needs to be in a classroom before the school year next year so she is used to it. She has always been home with me.
This is also how bad shit happens in these centers. Family doesn't want to turn in family and people not getting correct training.
