KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Two former restaurant employees been charged with adding poison to salsa that made customers sick at Mi Ranchito in Lenexa in August.
Arnoldo Bazan, 30, and Yini De La Torre, 19, both of Shawnee, are accused of mixing a Methomyl-based pesticide into the salsa.
Dozens of restaurant customers became ill, suffering from nausea, abdominal cramps, weakness, sweating and discomfort.
Bazan and Torre, who are husband and wife, were charged with conspiring to recklessly endanger other people by conspiring to tamper with a consumer product, and tampering with a consumer product.
Bazan was employed at a Mi Ranchito restaurant in Olathe, until June 27. Torre, was employed at the Mi Ranchito in Lenexa until Aug. 30.
According to the indictment, Bazan claimed the owner of Mi Ranchito restaurants as responsible for him losing his job and his vehicle.
Prosecutors said the couple devised a plan to use the poison in hopes the owner would be blamed and suffer financial harm.
"They made the worst possible decision they could make. In this country, there are so many ways to solve things, you don't have to do stupid things like that," Mi Ranchito owner Rulber Dela Torre said.
Bazan is accused of following the restaurant owner in July 2009. An anonymous notice was sent to the Mi Ranchito Web site threatening harm if Bazan's vehicle wasn't returned, prosecutors said.
On Aug. 10, 2009, Torre placed Methomyl into the salsa at the Mi Ranchito restaurant in Lenexa, according to the indictment. On Aug. 11, 12 patrons became ill.
On Aug. 28, Bazan sent a message to the restaurant owner that "the worst" was yet to come, prosecutors said. On Aug. 30, Torre again placed Methomyl into the salsa. On that day, 36 patrons immediately suffered nausea, abdominal cramps, weakness, sweating and chest discomfort, prosecutors said.
