I really hope this asshat gets what's coming to him, one way or another, either by justice or a bullet in the head on the way to court. Either would be fine. LWOP or the DP should be all that is considered. Unfortunately, other countries aren't feeling that.

Dutch citizen, and murder suspect Joran Van der Sloot, is seeking $10 million in damages from the Chilean government.
Leaked details from the petition have revealed that Van der Sloot has also named former Peruvian President Alan Garcia in the suit.
Van der Sloot claims his rights were violated during his arrest and extradition in Chile, in 2010.
According to El Dominical, the suit says then President Alan García pressured the Chilean government to extradite the Dutchman, shortly after he fled Peru.
The suit argues that Chile’s police didn’t grant him a phone call, or use of a computer to communicate with his family, failed to carry out due process and provide appropriate legal counsel.

Joran Van Der Sloot, Holloway Murder Suspect, Begins Trial In Peru On Friday
LIMA, Peru — Joran van der Sloot goes on trial in the murder of a young Peruvian woman Friday, nearly seven years after he became the prime suspect in the unsolved disappearance of an American teenager on holiday in Aruba.

Van der Sloot, 24, is charged with killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room on May 30, 2010, after the two left a casino together in the day's wee hours.

The slaying happened five years to the day after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, a 19-year-old from Alabama who was celebrating her high school graduation on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba and was seen leaving a nightclub with Van der Sloot. Her body has never been found.

Authorities say Van der Sloot confessed to killing Flores, claiming he became enraged after she discovered his connection to Holloway.

His attorney says the confession should be voided because the defense lawyer present when he made it was state-appointed and no official translator was present.

Police and Flores' family dispute Van der Sloot's version of her death that the defendant was hard up for cash and knew the Peruvian business student had been winning at the casino.

Prosecutors are seeking a 30-year prison sentence for Van der Sloot on murder and theft charges in a trial that will be held at Lima's Lurigancho prison. He is accused of murdering Flores with "ferocity and great cruelty," and prosecutors say he also stole 600 soles, about $220, from the victim.

The handsome, garrulous Dutchman, a staple of true-crime TV shows for years after Holloway's disappearance, has in several interviews described himself as a pathological liar. He's been in custody after his arrest in neighboring Chile just days after Flores' death.

Van der Sloot shares a cell with a Mexican and a Chinese inmate at the maximum security Miguel Castro Castro prison, separated from convicted prisoners, said his lawyer, Jose Luis Jimenez.

He said Van der Sloot spends his days making crafts and reading self-help books.

"His mood is super good," Jimenez said during a telephone interview Wednesday.

The defendant has granted several jailhouse interviews to media and was confronted there in September 2010 by Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway Twitty, when she accompanied a Dutch television crew. Her lawyer, John Q. Kelly, said at the time that she was determined to get answers about her daughter.

The Associated Press reached Twitty by telephone on Thursday and she said she no comment on the trial or whether she feels any closer to knowing her daughter's fate.

Van der Sloot has told several people he was involved in Holloway's disappearance, only to later deny it.

U.S. officials, who have indicted him on extortion and fraud charges, say Van der Sloot extorted $25,000 from Twitty after offering to lead Kelly to Holloway's body in Aruba, using the money to fly to Lima on May 14, 2010, just days after meeting with Kelly.

"I don't think he'll ever give the details of Natalee's disappearance," said Kelly, because "he gravitates toward the limelight and (maintaining the mystery is) his main method of gaining attention."

Van der Sloot's attorney, Jimenez will argue that his client was in a state of emotional distress when he killed Flores and "seek to reduce the charge from first-degree murder to simple homicide." The latter carries a prison sentence of from eight to 20 years.

Jimenez said his client, whose prominent lawyer father died of a heart attack on an Aruba tennis court in February 2010, was in a fragile state from years of being under suspicion for Holloway's presumed death and other legal problems stemming from that case.

"The killing was impromptu. There was no planning to carry it out," Jimenez said.

Lawyers for Flores' family, who are allowed to participate in the trial under Peruvian law, will try to show that Van der Sloot killed her to steal money she won at the casino.

If the court finds that to be true, a conviction could result in Van der Sloot being sentenced to life in prison.

"This guy wanted to take the money of the girl because he, in communications he had with his friends in Holland through Facebook and email, stated that he had no money, that he had no money or food, that his stay in Peru was hard and he told them: 'I am on the verge of prostitution,'" family lawyer Edward Alvarez said in an interview.

Alvarez predicted Van der Sloot would plead guilty Friday in an effort to get a reduced sentence.

Jimenez, the defense attorney, ruled out that possibility.

He said that would require his client to make a confession that accepted all the charges alleged by the prosecution.

The lawyer didn't dispute that Van der Sloot confessed to the killing, but he said the Dutchman's rudimentary Spanish didn't allow him to respond properly during his interrogation.

Van der Sloot met Flores, the daughter of a circus promoter and former race car driver, at the Atlantic Casino in Lima.

Video from casino cameras show the two playing at the same table, then leaving together.

In his confession, Van der Sloot said they planned to play Internet poker at the down-market TAC Hotel where he was staying. He said that while they were playing, his computer received an instant message on his links to the Holloway case. He said Flores then struck him, and he became enraged and strangled her.

Hotel video shows Van der Sloot entering the hotel with Flores then leaving alone a few hours later. Her body was found in the hotel room three days later.

Two days after that, the Dutchman was arrested in Chile.

Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the 2010 murder of a 21-year-old Peruvian woman he met at a Lima casino who was killed five years to the day of the unsolved disappearance in Aruba of an American teen in which he remains the main suspect.

“Yes, I want to plead guilty. I wanted from the first moment to confess sincerely,” he told the court. “I truly am sorry for this act. I feel very bad.”

Van der Sloot’s lawyer argued after his client’s brief statement that the defendant killed Stephany Flores as a result of “extreme psychological trauma” he suffered from the fallout of the 2005 disappearance on the Caribbean island of Aruba of Natalee Holloway.
    [...]

Van der Sloot entered the plea in hopes of a reduced sentence. The panel of three judges has 48 hours to render a sentence.

Prosecutors sought 30 years in prison on first-degree murder and theft charges. The defense claimed the killing was manslaughter, whose minimum sentence is 5 years.

Clever lawyer he's got there. If they'd fought it they would be locking him up and throwing away the key. Throwing himself on the mercy of the court, he might just be released some day.........

    Natalee Holloway declared legally dead
CNN) -- An Alabama judge signed an order Thursday declaring Natalee Holloway legally dead, attorneys for her family said.
Probate Judge Alan King signed the order after an afternoon hearing in Jefferson County court in Birmingham.
Holloway was 18 when she was last seen in the early hours of May 30, 2005, leaving a nightclub on the Caribbean island of Aruba with Joran van der Sloot and two other men. No one was ever charged in her disappearance, and her body has never been found.
    [...]
In 2005, the Alabama teenager was visiting the island with about 100 classmates to celebrate their graduation from Mountain Brook High School in suburban Birmingham.
Dave Holloway, Natalee's father, filed a petition to declare his daughter dead six years later, in June.
Beth Holloway, his ex-wife and the teen's mother, has said she opposes the move, saying in a September statement she "will always hope and pray for Natalee's safe return."
Her attorney, John Kelly, said Thursday there is no evidence showing the teen is deceased. Beth Holloway, who now works with groups and families of missing children, feels she is letting them down by agreeing to have her daughter declared dead, Kelly said.
Both parents were present for the hearing. Mark White, the attorney for Dave Holloway, said before the court session that no one was expected to come forward to formally contest the request.
Dave Holloway previously testified at a hearing that his daughter has not been seen in more than five years and no body has been found, White said.
In the September hearing, King ruled the petition could go forward, according to CNN affiliate WBRC.
At that time, King ruled that a notice of presumption of death must be published in a local newspaper for two successive weeks, followed by a 12-week time frame to submit any evidence the teen is still alive, WBRC said. Barring any such evidence, the judge would then be able to declare her dead.
Dave Holloway filed the petition to achieve closure for his family, White said, but also to resolve his daughter's estate. She is still listed as a participant and beneficiary on her father's health insurance, and there is a small college fund in her name.
Van der Sloot pleaded guilty Wednesday to all the charges against him in connection with the killing of a Peruvian woman in 2010.
    [...]
Van der Sloot also faces possible extradition to the United States. In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted him on charges of wire fraud and extortion after allegations surfaced that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother. Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus information about the whereabouts of Natalee Holloway's remains in exchange for the money, according to the indictment.

A woman who is paying Joran van der Sloot's legal fees and calls herself the convicted killer's 'guardian angel' has denied that he is manipulating her.
    [...]

American doctor Mary Hamer has paid around $100,000 to fund Van der Sloot's defence, and this week she told Anderson Cooper that she trusts her friend and believes he is innocent.

'Do you think he's playing you?' Mr Cooper asked in an interview which will be aired today, according to Radar Online.

'No, no I don't,' she replied.

Dr Hamer also insisted that Van der Sloot is not guilty of the two murders to which he has been linked.

'I still believe he's innocent, she said. 'I still don't know who killed Stephany Flores. There are too many unanswered questions.'

She claimed that the only reason he confessed to killing Ms Flores was because he was scared for his family's safety.

Van der Sloot was transferred to the high security Piedras Gordas facility in the north of the capital Lima after criticism that conditions where he was being held were too comfortable.

Since then, he is said to have deteriorated after he was placed in solitary confinement.

An insider told RadarOnline.com: 'His health has suffered and he is not doing well there.

'Joran blames the food and the water, he says that he is depressed and feeling weak all the time.'

While he was held at Castro Castro prison, van der Sloot was said to have enjoyed access to books, the internet and even conjugal visits from girlfriends.

He was even reported to have got his girlfriend pregnant while inside, although this has been denied.

Last week, it emerged he was in correspondence with divorced radiologist Dr Hamer.

She has wired $100,000 to help fund his legal costs and he wrote to her after being convicted of murder asking for more funds and claiming he loved her.
    [...]

The 161,458 sq ft Piedras Gordas - which means fat stones - is a maximum security prison in a barren area 19 miles from the capital Lima.

It is one of the harshest prisons in Peru, but van der Sloot has expressed concern he could be transferred to the notorious Challapalca Prison, in Tacna, southern Peru.

Ten years ago, that prison - located in a desert area on the border with Chile - was deemed unfit for inmates due to the extreme cold.

WOMAN WIPES OUT SAVINGS TO HELP JORAN VAN DER SLOOT

She spent most of her life savings trying to prove that Joran van der Sloot is innocent of the murder of a beautiful Peruvian heiress.

So imagine how she felt when 24-year-old van der Sloot pled guilty in a Peruvian court earlier this month and was sentenced to 28 years.

55-year-old Dr. Mary Hamer—yes, believe it or not she's a radiologist—has spent her own retirement fund on van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the murder of coed Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

Hamer told INSIDE EDITION's Diane McInerney, "It's been very emotional. My life has been threatened. My savings are wiped out."

But incredibly, she's still obsessed with van der Sloot.

McInerney asked, "Joran has signed a confession. Do you still believe Joran is innocent?"

"Yes, I do. I believe Joran van der Sloot is innocent," replied Hamer.

    "Why?" asked McInereny.

"I saw the pain in his face," said Hamer.

"How much money have you put towards his legal defence?" asked McInerney.

"I gave him about $100,000," answered Hamer.

McInerney asked, "You gave him $100,000? Why?"

"Legal fees. Dental bills. Food that he needs," said Hamer.

"Do you want your money back?" asked McInerney.

"Yes. My own savings are now wiped out through all of this," said Hamer.

She has managed to get some of the money back. But van der Sloot is asking for even more, including $1,000 and an iPhone so he can call her from behind bars.

McInerney asked, "Are you in love with him?"

"No. That would be a fraud. If I did anything like that, that would make my whole mission invalidated. I give him unconditional spiritual love. When you love someone you extend a helping hand to someone unconditionally, whether they've killed someone or not," said Hamer.

Van der Sloot calls her his guardian angel and writes emotional handwritten letters and emails such as: "Dear guardian angel, I am crying as I write this letter because I want you to visit me. Love Joran."

Joran's own mother told her to stop helping him because he's just not worth it.

Hamer told McInerney, "She said to me, quote, 'Some lives are not to save.' I said, 'Excuse me, I believe every life is precious. Every life is worth saving.' "

Hamer even wrote and recorded a song for van der Sloot called "Rescue."

"You know, people say that you sound crazy," said McInerney.

"Well, I do have the disease called compassion. I reach out to people who are suffering," replied Hamer.

Peru Approves First Step Toward Extradition of Joran van der Sloot
CNN) — The process to extradite Joran van der Sloot from Peru to the United States to face criminal charges has begun, according to Maximo Altez, van der Sloot’s Peruvian attorney.

According to court documents obtained through Altez, a Peruvian judge has approved a U.S. request for provisional detention. This is the first step in the extradition process between Peru and the United States. The document says a formal extradition request has yet to be submitted, but will follow.

Peruvian judges in January sentenced the Dutchman to 28 years in prison for the murder in 2010 of Stephany Flores. He is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of American Natalee Holloway. U.S. authorities want to try van der Sloot on charges of extortion and wire fraud in the Holloway case.

In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted him after allegations that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway’s mother, Beth Holloway. Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus information about the whereabouts of Holloway’s remains in exchange for the money, according to the indictment.

He was allegedly given $25,000, which authorities say he used to travel to Peru for a poker tournament.

If found guilty of extortion, he could be sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Hmmmmm....... Why have him extradited now? I think they should let him serve those 28 years in a Peruvian prison first.

@sintax;625673]It sounds like you are going to get your wish @Abroad....
The way I read this is he could be free in 12 years. 7 years in Peru and 5 here
The Peruvian Supreme Court has approved the extradition of Joran van der Sloot to the U.S. on charges of extorting money from the family of missing Alabama teen Natalee Holloway.

There is just one small catch -- Van der Sloot's extradition will not take place until he serves out his 28-year sentence for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores. The Peruvian business student was killed five years to the day after the unsolved disappearance in Aruba of Holloway.
Van der Sloot will be eligible for parole after serving one-third of his sentence. He could be extradited in as few as seven years.

According to Griffith, whose most renowned case, involving an American incarcerated in a Turkish prison, was the basis for the film and book "Midnight Express," Van der Sloot would likely face a five- to 10-year sentence in the U.S. for the alleged extortion. But, it is possible additional charges related to Holloway could be filed later.

"Maybe by the time he is released, [the U.S.] will have an airtight case against him in Natalee Holloway's disappearance," said Griffith.

Joran Van Der Sloot's Letters Ask For Forgiveness For Murdering Stephany Flores

Joran van der Sloot wants forgiveness for the murder of Stephany Flores and wants people to believe he had nothing to do with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, according to two lengthy letters released by his attorney.

"I ask God every day that Stephany's parents can find it in their heart to forgive me," van der Sloot wrote.

Van der Sloot, 24, is serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru's Piedras Gordas prison for the murder of Flores. The business student was found stabbed to death in van der Sloot's Lima hotel room on June 2, 2010.

The Dutchman is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The 18-year-old from Mountain Brook, Ala., vanished while on a class trip to Aruba in 2005. She was last seen leaving an Oranjestad nightclub with van der Sloot, then a 17-year-old Dutch honors student living in Aruba. Holloway's body has never been found, and van der Sloot has not been charged in her disappearance.

In the letters, which were written in June and released this week by his lawyer Max Altez, van der Sloot said he had "nothing to do with" Holloway's disappearance -- something which could weigh heavily on him once he is released from prison.

Last month, the Peruvian Supreme Court approved the extradition of van der Sloot to the U.S. on charges that he extorted $25,000 from Holloway's mother. Prosecutors said that in exchange for the money he received in 2010, van der Sloot promised to reveal how Holloway died and the location of her body.

Van der Sloot will be eligible for parole after serving one-third of his murder sentence. He could be extradited in as few as seven years.

Van der Sloot also points the finger at his previous attorney, saying it was "bad legal advice" that resulted in his 28-year prison sentence, which is currently under appeal.

"My rights have been constantly abused," van der Sloot said. The Dutchman added, "My lawyer promised me I would receive 15 years if I plead guilty, I did."

Van der Sloot said he has a history of psychological problems, "which were never taken into consideration," by his previous defense team

Altez said van der Sloot wanted the letters released so the public would know he had been misled.

According to The Associated Press, the man who previously represented van der Sloot has denied that he lied to him.

The latest gossip in the bizarre life and crimes of convicted killer Joran van der Sloot is that the imprisoned 24-year-old is about to tie the knot in Peru. But, as with everything else in the young Dutchman's life, nothing is certain yet.

The rumors of marriage surfaced last week at Peru21.pe. The Peruvian news website, citing van der Sloot's attorney, Max Altez, said he plans to marry inside a Peruvian prison, where he is serving a 28-year prison sentence for the murder of Stephany Flores. The 21-year-old business student was found stabbed to death in van der Sloot's Lima hotel room on June 2, 2010.

The Dutchman is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The 18-year-old from Mountain Brook, Ala., vanished while on a class trip to Aruba in 2005. She was last seen leaving an Oranjestad nightclub with van der Sloot, then a 17-year-old honors student living in Aruba. Holloway's body has never been found, and van der Sloot has not been charged in her disappearance.

Altez, according to Peru21.pe, "declined to comment on the identity of the bride or the wedding date," but said it would take place this year.

If the latest gossip is true, Van der Sloot has some notable company among desired prisoners, including:

•Richard "The Night Stalker" Ramirez, a convicted California serial killer who married behind bars

•Charles Denton "Tex" Watson, a former member of the Charles Manson Family who married behind bars and fathered four children through conjugal visits

•Henry Louis Wallace, a North Carolina serial killer who married a former prison nurse behind bars

Even John Mark Karr, the man who once claimed to have killed 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, apparently found love for a brief period: A woman who claimed to be his ex-fiancee made headlines a couple years ago when she went on national TV saying he is living as a woman and trying to recruit little girls for a kiddie sex cult.

Altez was unavailable for comment this afternoon. In an earlier interview with The Daily Beast, Altez denied he had said anything about wedding plans.

"I deny all of that," Altez said. "As far as I know, he’s not going to get married. They cited me as the source, but I'm just in charge of his legal issues, and I don't participate in his private life."

Shortly after his arrest for Flores' murder, van der Sloot told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that he was receiving multiple marriage offers from women.

"One of them even wants me to get her pregnant," De Telegraaf quoted van der Sloot as saying.

Whether van der Sloot will be getting married anytime soon is yet to be seen, however infamous men behind bars often enjoy a slew of women who flock to them, so anythings possible.

Holy Shit! Joran's going to be a Daddy!!!

Joran Van Der Sloot, Stephany Flores Killer, Impregnates Woman While In Prison

A Dutch newspaper says that Joran van der Sloot, who is serving a 28-year-sentence for murdering a young Peruvian woman, has impregnated a woman while imprisoned in Lima.

De Telegraaf newspaper on Monday cited Van der Sloot's lawyer Maximo Altes as saying the pregnancy is past its third month, and Van der Sloot himself as confirming the news in a telephone call. The woman, identified by the paper only as "Leidi," was said to have become pregnant during an unsupervised visit with Van der Sloot.

Van der Sloot was convicted for robbing and killing Stephany Flores in 2010. He is also wanted in the U.S. in connection with the disappearance of teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005. He could resist extradition if he obtains Peruvian nationality.
