It sounds so horrible to say that I hope they've found her remains; I'd rather have her alive and well. Still we pretty much know she's dead, so please let her be found; let her parents put her to rest. I hope their long nightmare will soon be over.

It's not horrible. I think we all feel the same way. If she's dead, let the family (and all that have agonized over this) have peace.

So if they found just her bone, I guess it could be very well true that he did toss her in the ocean. After 5 years being submerged under water your flesh and all disintergrates and is eaten almost immediatley but bones will stay in tact for much, much longer. They do end up breaking off piece by piece and I guess only her jaw bone made it to land from current (just a theory but makes somewhat sense). van der Sloot had so many different stories on what happened like he left her in that state bird park or he left her on the beach, etc... Finding her jaw bone like that points to the water story, don't u think?

A portion of a jawbone recently found on a beach in Aruba is human - but does not belong to Natalee Holloway, the Alabama teenager who was last seen on the island in 2005, authorities said Tuesday.

Authorities said dental records used to compare the small amount of the DNA on the bone did not match.

"Based on dental records, it can be ruled out that the bone fragment came from Natalee Holloway," the Aruban Prosecutor's Office siad in a statement.

Authorities said the jawbone contained a wisdom tooth, and since Natalee had had her wisdom teeth removed, they were able to eliminate her.

"It could be excluded that the investigated bone material and molar came from Natalee Holloway," prosecutors said, adding they have no new leads in her disappearance. They said the Holloway case has "the constant attention from law enforcement on the island."
Now that authorities have determined the jawbone does not belong to Natalee, the big question is: Who does it belong to? Authorities said they will review any missing person cases.

Just an Update / Interview with van der Sloots lawyer

Joran Van Der Sloot's lawyer has blasted Beth Holloway for 'bribing' her way into a Peruvian jail to question his infamous client about her missing daughter Natalee Holloway...
Peruvian lawyer Max Altez Navarro is currently trying to get his client released into the general population of Peru's Castro Castro Prison

Navarro said: "Look, Beth Holloway bribed her way into prison. She paid under the table to see my client and she acted in a crazy fashion but I understand why she did it too.

"She was only with Joran for a few minutes and he simply gave her my business card and told her 'call my lawyer' it was as simple as that."

Navarro - who claims that his family has been threatened because he is representing Van Der Sloot - thinks that he can get him released from prison on his latest murder charge.
The lawyer believes that any confession Van Der Sloot previously made was illegal and that if he is not formally questioned again with a proper translator within 18 months of being in jail then he should automatically be released.

At the moment the case seems to be in stalemate with Navarro blaming the Peruvian authorities for not providing a Dutch/Spanish interpreter while the Dutch embassy told him that they are not entitled to assign an interpreter to the case either.

Van der Sloot and his lawyer have appealed to have his confession thrown out claiming police irregularities, coercion and the lack of a qualified Dutch language translator.

Navarro revealed: "If my client is not rightfully questioned within 18 months of his imprisonment then under Peruvian law he should be released.

"Nothing that happened before was legally correct in my opinion. I have just spoken to Joran and his spirits are good despite of everything.

"He is treated well in prison and he is a big guy at 6 ft 5 inches tall who can look after himself.

"He is being housed with four other men in the maximum security unit and there have been no problems - it is not like he is a child molester or anything like that.

"He spends his time playing cards and chess while he gets to exercise regularly too - once a week he is permitted to make a phone call to his mother Anita which keeps his spirits-up.

"We are tyring to get the director of the prison to house him with the general population now and I don't think he would have any problems there either - he is looked-on as a bit of a celebrity by the other prisoners because of all the media interest in him.

"It is true that my family received some threats because I am representing Joran and there was an incident involving my daughter who is studying in Miami.

"But I have been hired by his mother and I will see this case through because he deserves proper legal representation.

"Joran is like a big kid and he does have some psychological issues but he has been through a lot and at times he was treated like a 'caged animal' which I did not like to see.

"He is not on any special medication although he did recently receive some cream to treat a skin disorder - my only concern is to deal with this case in Peru not any other one in another country and that is my focus."

Update on Plea for Flores Murder..

Joran van der Sloot will plead guilty to murdering a young Peruvian woman he met while gambling, but will argue temporary insanity.

Van der Sloot -- who remains the key suspect in the mysterious disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old from Alabama, on the Caribbean island of Aruba in 2005 -- will use a "violent emotion" defense in the killing of Flores, Van der Sloot's attorney Maximo Altez said. In doing so, Van der Sloot hopes to have his sentence significantly reduced.
Van der Sloot is accused of first-degree murder, which carries a 15-to-35-year sentence, if convicted.

The "violent emotion" plea is typically used in Peru for crimes of passion where a spouse, for example, is surprised in the act of adultery.

If it were to be accepted by a trial judge, Van der Sloot would be sentenced to 3-to-5 years, and Altez said his client could be freed in just 20 months.

A lawyer for Flores' family called the proposed plea absurd, saying that given all the factors of the case, Van der Sloot deserved to spend a minimum of 25 years in prison.

"The manner in which the suspect killed Stephany evidenced disproportionate violence," attorney Edward Alvarez said.

Van der Sloot lied about laptop use in killing

CNN) -- The laptop belonging to Joran Van der Sloot was turned off the night he is suspected of having killed a young Peruvian woman in Lima, suggesting he lied to investigators when he said he attacked her after she read an e-mail on his computer connecting him to missing American teenager, Natalee Holloway, a source said Friday.
Van der Sloot has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the case of 21-year-old Stephany Flores. Authorities found Flores' body in a Lima hotel room registered to him last year.

Surveillance video from the hotel shows Van der Sloot and Flores entering the hotel room together around 5 a.m. on Sunday, May 30. He is seen leaving by himself some three hours later.
Police have said that Van der Sloot admitted he attacked Flores on May 30 after she read an e-mail on his computer connecting him to the Holloway case.

But, according to an analysis of that computer, it was turned off between Saturday, May 29 around 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 30 around noon, a source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told In Session.
police official, meanwhile, said the computer was active, but that nothing done or received during the time period in question would suggest Flores saw information linking Van der Sloot to Holloway. The official, connected to the case, was not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Van der Sloot's attorney, Maximo Altez, said the laptop analysis does not change his defense. His client attacked Flores after she found something on his computer that tied him to Holloway, he said.

"The police can't determine the exact time when Stephany was killed. She was in the room for three days ... Joran didn't mean to kill this woman," said Altez.
Flores' body was discovered on June 2.

Van de Sloot is perhaps best known as the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Holloway in Aruba. He was arrested twice in connection with the case, but was not charged.

Investigators found some files related to the Holloway case on Van der Sloot's computer, but many of them were deleted, the source said.
fter killing Flores, police say, Van der Sloot took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested June 3. He was returned the next day to Peru and is being held at the Miguel Castro Castro prison in Lima.

Van der Sloot used his laptop to search travel to Chile and border checkpoints, the source said.

He could face a minimum of 15 years in prison if found guilty of first-degree murder. If convicted on the lesser charge of manslaughter, he could face up to five years in prison.
Altez recently supplied "In Session" with a copy of a motion he filed last year in support of the manslaughter charge.

"My client ... admits having murdered the victim, but not with ferocity, for profit or pleasure, nor any of the other element(s) that make up this murder, but only by violent emotion that overtook him at the time he was attacked by the victim," the motion read

    Hmmmm....

And he is sticking with the "she found something on my computer that linked me to Natalie Holloway"-defence? I sincerely hope that is a mistake.

I still do not understand how in a million years he persuaded a young woman to go to his hotel room with him. Did she know who he was? Did she believe that he had been innocently maligned for no good reason? Did she somehow imagine that she might get to the bottom of the enigma?

Holloway suspect involved in prison stabbings

LIMA, Peru — Joran van der Sloot, suspected in the disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway in 2005, has been involved in several stabbing incidents in a Peruvian prison, Dutch media reported, citing Panorama magazine.

DutchNews.Nl said Panorama reported that van der Sloot, charged with murdering a woman in Peru, has stabbed three people and had been put into solitary confinement several times.

A lawyer for Van der Sloot did not deny the stabbing incidents, DutchNews.nl said, citing Panorama.

Joran van der Sloot due in court June 8th, but he may not have attorney

The main suspect in the disappearance of Mountain Brook teenager, Natalee Holloway, goes to court tomorrow. However, Joran van der Sloot still does not have an attorney representing him in the case involving the murder of Peruvian woman, Stephany Flores.

Attorney Maximo Altez quit May 31st. He cited differences in defense strategy. There were also reports that Altez had not been paid.

Van der Sloot has yet to retain another attorney. If he doesn't have one by June 8th, the hearing will likely be continued.

Van der Sloot has confessed to killing Flores last May. Her body was found five years to the day that Natalee Holloway disappeared on her senior trip in Aruba.

    Here's my rough translation:
Joran van der Sloot is going to be a father. He met the girl in the same casino where he met Stephany Flores. Apparently he will also be selling eatware, like dishes and stuff out of the prison. His new lawyer starts today.
Seriously, how the hell is this guy getting conjugal visits?

Zijn vorige advocaat stapte op vanwege een meningverschil over de te voeren strategie.

His previous lawyer stepped in because of a disagreement over the strategy to be pursued.

"His last lawyer stepped down due to a difference in opinion on an appropriate defense strategy."

Ah, thank you. I had a feeling it was "stepped down" and not "stepped in" - that makes all the difference in the world.

Gee, a difference of opinion on strategy? You mean like the lawyer told him "you're a schmuck and we have to plead guilty" and Joran went bonkers because he thinks he's somehow innocent?

Unfortunately, I'm not privy to that particular conversation. But it's entirely possible that the lawyer decided he couldn't defend such a scumbag. :P

Peruvian authorities have charged Joran van der Sloot with murder in the case of the death of a Peruvian woman.

Van der Sloot was arrested in June of last year, but was not formally charged until Thursday.

Prosecutors are asking for a 30-year prison sentence and a restitution of $73,000 to the family of Stephany Flores. They also charged van der Sloot with theft.

Charged alongside van der Sloot were three Peruvian drivers who allegedly helped him flee Peru into Chile. Prosecutors want five-year prison sentences for them and fines of about $1,800.

Van der Sloot is now charged with the May 2010 killing of Flores, who was found dead in his Lima hotel room. Police say van der Sloot took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.

Earlier this month, Flores' family urged prosecutors to file their case, warning that van der Sloot could be released by December unless the case goes ahead. Under Peruvian law, if a suspect's trial doesn't begin within 18 months of his arrest, he is set free.

Investigators delivered their case file to prosecutors in June for a decision on charges.

No date has been set for trial.

Van der Sloot's attorney said that the defense was expecting the charges to be filed, given the high-profile nature of the case.

"We think 30 years is too much for this crime since it was an isolated incident without any further acts of violence," Luis Jimenez Navarro said. "We have had cases in Peru under similar circumstances that have gotten less than 25 years."

The next stage is a hearing in about 15 days where the defense will respond to the charges, Jimenez said.

Neither Joran van der Sloot nor his lawyer showed up for a preliminary hearing in Lima, Peru Monday but the family of his victim was there front and center demanding a tougher charge and life behind bars.

Van der Sloot has already admitted he killed 21 year old Stephany Flores. He claims it happened in a fit of rage after she found material about Natalee Holloway on his laptop. His defense says that adds up to "simple homicide" (roughly equivalent to a manslaughter charge here) and they'll plead guilty to a sentence of 6-20 years.

Not nearly enough says the Flores family!
And they're not much happier with prosecutors than they are with van der Sloot.
    [...]

Both the accused and the victim's family disagree with the indictment proposed by prosecutor Miriam Riveros Castellares. She is asking the panel to indict Van der Sloot on charges of qualified murder and simple robbery, which carry 28-year and 2-year sentences. He would also make a restitution payment of $73,000 to the victim's family.

The Flores family attorney is insisting prosecutors change the charge to an aggravated murder charge that would carry a life sentence.

The panel has 15 days to decide on the request from the Flores family for a new indictment. If a decision is made not to return the indictment to the prosecutor's office, a date will be set for Van der Sloot to stand trial on murder and theft charges, the court said.

The danger there is that if van der Sloot is not brought to trial by December, he could be set free.
Most observers in Peru consider this unlikely, but the entire van der Sloot saga has been filled with bizarre and unlikely occurrences.

Van der Sloot is also under a federal indictment for extortion and wire fraud brought by a grand jury here in Birmingham. The FBI says he took money from the Holloway family in exchange for information about Natalee's fate. The indictment says he took the money but never gave any information.

Natalee Holloway's dad asks court to declare daughter legally 'dead'
Natalee Holloway's father has served papers on her mother seeking to have the teenager, who disappeared during a senior class trip to Aruba in 2005, declared legally dead.

Court papers obtained by ABC News indicate that on April 19, 2011, Dave Holloway signed papers seeking a "petition for presumption of death for persons missing for more than five years." Natalee Holloway vanished on May 30, 2005, more than six years ago, at age 17.

The request was actually filed in probate court on June 21. The court documents state that a hearing on the father's request is scheduled for Sept. 23.

The missing teen's mother, Beth Holloway, spoke briefly to ABCNews.com to say she does not intend to agree to have her daughter declared legally dead.

"No, I want to get to the bottom of what's going on from Dave," she said.

The court papers state that Natalee left an estate "estimated to be worth approximately $500 and probably not more."

American doctor sending money to van der Sloot
Birmingham, Ala (WIAT) Why would an American doctor send tens of thousands of dollars to Joran van der Sloot and his mother, Anita?

A variety of Dutch websites are carrying a story by crime reporter John van den Heuvel saying a Florida radiologist has sent tens of thousands of dollars to van der Sloot and his mother to help pay for his legal defense on murder charges he's facing in Peru. According to reports in the Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf, the woman says she's convinced van der Sloot is the victim of a conspiracy and denies any romantic involvement.

De Telegraaf identifies the doctor as Mary Hamer, a radiologist in Lake City, Florida. A records search also shows a Montgomery, Alabama address for Dr. Hamer. A search of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners website shows her license to practice in this state expired in 2004.

The body of Stephany Flores was found in van der Sloot's Lima hotel room five years to the day that Natalee Holloway vanished on a graduation trip to Aruba. She was last seen leaving an Oranjestad bar with van der Sloot and two of his friends, the Kalpoe brothers.

Van der Sloot confessed to Peruvian investigators that he killed Flores in a fit of rage when she found material about Natalee on his laptop.

Prosecutors say an examination of van der Sloot's computer debunk the "crime of passion" defense because the Natalee material on his laptop was accessed the day before Stephany Flores died.

Original murder charge against van der Sloot will stand

CNN) -- A panel of judges in Peru has ruled against augmenting the charges against Joran van der Sloot, meaning the original charges of murder and robbery will stand and that the Dutch national would face a maximum of 30 years in prison if convicted.

Van der Sloot is accused of killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room last year. Police say van der Sloot took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.

He was charged in September with "qualified murder" and simple robbery, which carry sentences of 28 years and two years, respectively.

However, the victim's family had asked a three-judge panel for a more stringent charge, akin to aggravated murder, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The panel ruled in favor of prosecutors' original indictment.

Van der Sloot's defense attorney, Luis Jimenez Navarro, told InSession the decision was a major victory for his client. If van der Sloot is found guilty and sentenced to the maximum penalty, under Peru's jail reduction credits, he might serve only a third of the time.

Jimenez has previously said that his client would confess to a charge of simple homicide.

Despite the panel's decision, the Flores family remains hopeful that van der Sloot will face more serious charges. A family attorney said that because of how the justice system works in Peru, the charges could change once the trial begins.

"We can ask the prosecutor to modify the indictment as new facts come out during the trial. But on the first day of trial, we expect van der Sloot to plead guilty to both charges. It seems this will be in his best interest," the attorney told InSession.

Meanwhile, van der Sloot's lawyer said that he plans to file a motion with the court, requesting his client be set free.

As of early next month, van der Sloot will have spent 18 months in Peruvian prison. Jimenez will argue that under Peruvian law, it is considered excessive imprisonment when a person has been jailed for more than 18 months without having had his day in court.

    [...]
"The delay is not his fault. We have been acting in good faith. He has been cooperating with the authorities. And they still don't have a translator," said Jimenez.

It will be up to the court to decide whether van der Sloot is freed. Because of the case's complexity, a judge could rule to keep him behind bars. Once Jimenez presents his habeas corpus motion, a panel of judges will meet to interview van der Sloot and make a determination.

Jimenez said he is not hopeful the case against his client will be heard any time soon, given the upcoming court calendar. In Peru, judges are switched out in January and the courts take vacation in February.

Van der Sloot was once the prime suspect in the disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, who vanished while on a graduation trip to the Caribbean island of Aruba. He was arrested twice but never charged in connection with Holloway's disappearance, which remains unsolved.

He also faces extradition charges to the United States. In June, 2010 a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted van der Sloot on charges of wire fraud and extortion after allegations that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother. Authorities believe he used that money to travel to Peru and participate in a poker tournament, where he met Flores.

Peruvian murder trial for van der Sloot set for January
(CNN) -- Joran van der Sloot will stand trial beginning January 6 on robbery and murder charges related to a 21-year-old woman's death, a Peruvian court announced Friday.

The timetable from the Superior Court of Lima came days after a panel of judges ruled against having the Dutch national face an even more stringent slate of charges, as the victim's family members had requested. Instead, he will face the original charges levied against him -- which, if he is convicted on all counts, could lead to a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

Van der Sloot is accused of killing Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room last year. Police say he took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.

The victim's family asked a three-judge panel for a charge akin to aggravated murder, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The panel ruled against the family and in favor of prosecutors' original indictment.

Van der Sloot's defense attorney, Luis Jimenez Navarro, then told InSession that the judge's decision was a major victory for his client. If van der Sloot is found guilty and sentenced to the maximum penalty, under Peru's jail reduction credits, he might serve only a third of the term.
