A Marine from Boulder accused of faking his own disappearance in 2006 to avoid service in Iraq was arrested this afternoon, along with his father, at the Port Angeles, Wash., airport.

A tip from Boulder led Washington police to 23-year-old Lance Hering, who was arrested with his father, Lloyd Hering, who faces a misdemeanor charge of aiding and abetting a criminal.

The largest search in Boulder County Sheriff's Office history ensued in the summer of 2006 when Hering, a lance corporal home on leave, supposedly fell in Eldorado Canyon. More than 600 people were involved.

Five days later his climbing companion, Steve Powers, confessed to helping stage the disappearance.

Hering was wanted by the U.S. Marine Corps for desertion. In the aftermath of his disappearance, a Boulder County judge revoked Hering's deferred sentence in a 2004 attempted burglary case, meaning he will now carry a felony conviction and could face civilian jail time, as well.

Good god, what a bullshit coward! HE signed up, it wasn't forced on him. He'll be getting jail time for that burglary case and severe punishment for desertion, not to mention the charges for faking his death.

He deserves them all!

What an asshole! He wasted so many people's time and energy looking for him. While I have no doubt that the Iraq war has been extremely stressful-- especially with multiple deployments-- and he was all of 20 during his first tour, desertion stories anger me a great deal as my husband is deployed.

While it sounds as if his unit was involved in some very ugly issues, running away has worsened his problems a hundred fold.

Bottom line: If you sign up for service, follow through. As this guy is going to find out, the military does not take AWOL lightly and a dishonorable discharge will be a huge strike against him now and in the future. It is up to the prospective soldier or sailor to do their homework on the branch of service they are enlisting and on the wars and conflicts where they might be deployed. In my opinion, there are absolutely no excuses for this. Not when so many people sign up and fulfill the oath they made, sometimes with their lives.

During the recent election I had a candidate knock on on my door. While I agreed with many of his politics, I took GREAT offense at his stand on the current National Guard situation. He called it a "back door draft" because many signed up for the educational benefits and not for the deployments or other duties.

I gave him more than an earful about the contract these people signed. I told him that the folks that want an education without the obligation were ABUSING THE SYSTEM. Added a few choice words about my husband serving 32+ years and being in the Middle East at the moment (plus last year in Baghdad) - by choice - and yada yada yada...

I wrote in a candidate in that position and was ever grateful he lost the election.

If you are NOT going to live up to the obligations you sign up for, do not sign up at all. Even then, there is a way out without causing what this kid caused.

Again, SHAME on him and his family.

This is my turf and there is some steep cliffs there in Port Angeles.
For this guy to get 600 people scouring the place, looking for a body, that was somewhere on a playstation is beyond me.
Couldn't they come up with a better one?
