Baby abandoned at restroom of McDonalds

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police have released still images of the man who abandoned a newborn baby in the women’s restroom of a McDonald’s restaurant in southwest Charlotte early Wednesday.

Police said witnesses saw the man take an infant carrier covered in blankets into the restroom of the restaurant on Rivergate Parkway and then run out the door shortly after 9 a.m. An employee went into the women’s restroom and found the baby about three minutes later.

Workers called 911.

“I'm at McDonald's at Rivergate, and we found a newborn in the ladies’ room. I think it's just freshly out. It still has the umbilical cord, it's naked and I was wondering if they could send an ambulance for or somebody to pick the baby up because it's cold," a 911 caller said.

Officer Robert Fey said paramedics estimate the baby boy was just two to three hours old.

The infant was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center, but police said he appears to be fine. The newborn is being kept under observation and the Department of Social Services has been notified. MEDIC officials said such abandonment situations are very rare in Mecklenburg County.

Officers are now looking for the man spotted at the McDonald’s and the newborn’s mother. North Carolina does have a Safe Surrender law, which states that a mother can place a baby up to seven days old in the care of a responsible adult and walk away. Police said the mother of this infant could face charges.

WBTV has learned that the man who left the baby in the restroom may not be the child's father. The man in the photos from the McDonalds security cameras is black and the child is white

Newborns are not able to regulate body heat...very, very easy for a newborn to die from hypothermia.

Totally have to agree with you. There are TOO MANY stories of trashcan babies ... it may have been a bad plan, but they found the kid almost immediately because of it!

I hope he's healthy and finds his way to a great home and parents who love him.

Mayor McCheese announced today, that they received a anonymous tip, that led them to the home of a local criminal known only as the Hamburlgar, He was arrested at the home and admitted to leaving the baby, in the woman's bathroom.

He said he tried real hard but couldn't find a responsible adult, in the whole restaurant, nor could he find one working behind the counter.

He is deeply sorry for what he did and was covering up for a friend of his named Ron. Ron has an extensive background with the circus and was known to be an entertainer for local children's party's.

The police have release an image of the child in hopes some one will recognize the father.

Well, at least he put it in the womens restroom....we're more baby oriented....if he put the baby in the mens room....some would walk in do their business and not even notice the baby....some would pat the little guy on the head and chuck him under the chin....not noticing that he is alone, naked and has an umbilical cord attached....
so there WERE a couple of brain cells rubbing together in dudes head....
STILL hope the MOM is o.k.
