PORTLAND, Ore. - A 54-year-old man found inside a Southeast Portland apartment along with a dead woman on Friday has been charged with murder, police said.

Joseph Frank Rockwood was lodged in the Multnomah County jail on one count of murder. He was being held without bond Saturday.

Police responded to the Stonehenge Apartment complex at 11614 Southeast Division St. Friday to check on the welfare of a woman who had not been seen for several days, police said. They discovered the body of a woman in her 50s while checking Apartment 96. Rockwood was also in the apartment, apparently just sitting down.

Police detained him and obtained a search warrant to enter the apartment. Investigators donned protective suits and masks, and an awful smell permeated the complex once they opened the door.

An autopsy determined she died of "homicidal violence," police said, but they did not specify how they believe she was killed or how long her body might have been in the apartment.

Authorities were not able to immediately positively identify her. The relationship between Rockwood and the woman was not clear.

Police identified a woman Monday who was stabbed to death inside a southeast Portland apartment.

Using medical records, police were able to identify 52-year-old Theresa Rockwood as the woman found dead Friday.

Theresa Rockwood's brother, Joseph Rockwood, was taken into custody on one count of murder in connection with the death. His arrest came after police were called to the 11600 block of Southeast Division Street to conduct a welfare check at 11:40 a.m. Friday.
