PEORIA —A 17-year-old South Peoria woman was ordered held on $150,000 bond for allegedly allowing her 5-month-old son's leg and rib to be broken.

Stephanie M. Barton appeared in Peoria County Circuit Court on charges of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery. The alleged injuries to the child could have merited a more serious charge of aggravated battery to a child, which carries a mandatory prison sentence, but state law says a person has to be at least 18 to be charged with that offense.

Barton, of 3015 W. Trewyn Ave., and the boy's father, who is 15, are accused of hurting the child sometime between May, when the boy was born, and this week, said Assistant State's Attorney David Kenny.

The prosecutor said authorities learned of the injuries when the baby was brought to Methodist Medical Center, initially for a complaint of the baby being fussy and crying. When it was apparent that police were going to be called, the father allegedly tried to remove the child from the hospital.

When questioned by the police, both Barton and the father allegedly admitted they had gotten frustrated with the child but were unable to pinpoint a day or time when the alleged injuries could have occurred. Both admitted to squeezing the child, the prosecutor said in open court, but again, couldn't determine when the injuries occurred.

The boy remains at the hospital, where he is undergoing more tests to determine if there are more injuries.

The father was arrested, but what charges he could face or whether he was being held in the county's juvenile detention center wasn't known.

I cannott believe they are 15 and 17! I look younger and I am 31! And I really think it is super tacky to wear any ole t-shirt to get your photo taken. He should have worn a truckers hat to make the ensemble complete!

I'm very relieved that this poor baby was taken from him before they showed up with a dead baby. I can't believe they came in with the baby initially because he was crying and fussing...yeah, well it helps to NOT beat your baby, works wonders!

The POS's don't even have a decent picture of their baby....no surprise there really.

    Get well little one.

GED= Good Enough Diploma. Baby gets hurt, but baby doesn't die= Good Enough Discipline.
I had my son at 14 years old, he has scored in the top 10 in the nation in math, science and english, he is band and plays 3 instruments and he is teaching himself to speak japanese. He babysits and is a really great kid.
It is possible to have a baby as a teen, and not completely fuck it all up.

A Peoria County Prosecutor wonders whether the punishment will fit the crime after two teens plead guilty to abusing their 5–month–old son.

The Prosecutor who handled Monday's guilty plea says both teen parents had been abusing the boy for some time before police got involved in late October when he was taken to Methodist Medical Center.

Authorities say Stephanie Barton and the boy's father 15–year–old Michael Luncsford lived together with their child on the 3–thousand block of Trewyn Avenue.

And according to the Prosecutor, the couple shook and squeezed the 5–month old boy because he was fussy and crying.

The baby's injuries included 17 fractured ribs, a broken leg and wrist along with his face being bitten.

The Crittenton Crisis Nursery says this could have all been avoided because they will accepts kids at any time when parents feel like they would harm them.

"There are so many resources out there and so many educational opportunities and a lot of them are free of charge like the Crisis Nursery. To have someone not utilize those services and go to such drastic measures, such sick measures to a baby is devastating," said Dan Oliver with Crittenton Crisis Nursery.

Because both of the teenage parents were younger than 18 at the time of their arrest, they were able to plead guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated domestic battery.

That's a Class 2 felony with a punishment from probation to 10 years behind bars.

The prosecutor in the case would have rather the two face aggravated battery to a child, which is a Class X felony and jail time up to 30 years.

The couple will be sentenced on June 24th and are currently behind bars.

The baby is in foster care and authorities say could soon be adopted.
Fortunately, the nearly one year old boy now is doing fine physically even though the prosecutor says there are some psychological issues.

You squeeze a baby, you're going to break ribs. You grab a leg, an arm forcibly and their bones are going to break. None of this behavior is excusable. NONE. What I don't get is: What's with all the biting on the face? Really. Do they go to kiss that child and their horse teeth get in the way?

They look like they're related. Creepy. Hell with the age of the parents and that plea bargaining bullshit. At least they won't be getting their child back.

That's kind of what I was thinking. when are kids going to learn that its not just a cute thing to do.. Just because Jamie lynn Spears had a baby doesn't mean that you should! You just don't have the skills to be an effective parent that young! Let alone an education and/or the money to pay for a baby.

I think it is possible for teenage parents to be good parents, but in this case they weren't. But don't you think that the parents of the teenage parents should be held somewhat accountable.

Also in the state of Wisconsin, age 17 having sex with a 15 year old is considered sexual assault as I understand

Two teenagers who abused their 5-month-old son are on their way to prison.

Michael Luncsford and Stephanie Barton were sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.

The couple, both under 18-years of age, shook and squeezed the 5-month old boy because he was fussy and crying.
    [...]

The injuries could have merited the more serious charge of aggravated battery to a child, which carries a mandatory prison sentence of up to 30 years.

State law, however, says a person has to be at least 18 to be charged with that offense.

I realize that he is a minor but I would still kinda like to see a picture of him. You would think that being sent to prision for such a crime would supersede the minor crap.

I agree... I had my daughter at 17yrs old and she has turned out to be one of the best kids I know and meet (and daily I meet teenagers who run all over their parents who were much older).

As far as the parents of the teens being responsible... In some ways yes, as where did they live at that age.. probably with their parents.
