A North Carolina man was arrested in Virginia Beach in connection with the abduction of a 13-year-old South Carolina girl, a police news release said.
Police said a
13-year-old South Carolina girl began talking to Shawn Engle, 31, of Gates County, N.C. on MySpace, and that after about a week of e-mail communications, he drove to South Carolina on Aug. 30, picked her up and brought her to Virginia Beach.
Her parents reported her missing in South Carolina, police said.
Police in South Carolina identified Engle and on Sept. 15, North Carolina
police found the girl at Engle’s mother’s house in North Carolina, the news release said.
South Carolina police obtained a warrant for Engle’s arrest on the charge of kidnapping, the news release said. He was believed to be staying in Virginia Beach and authorities there were notified.
On Friday, a Virginia Beach police officer saw a vehicle that matched the description of Engle’s vehicle parked in the driveway of a home on the 4800 block of Westgrove Road. Engle was taken into custody at the home without incident, police said.
Engle is being held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Facility on the South Carolina kidnapping charge, the news release said. Additionally,
Virginia Beach detectives charged Engle with abduction with intent to defile and carnal knowledge. Beach police said their investigation revealed that Engle and the girl had sex on at least two occasions.
Police are still investigating the case.
