    The Book of Bunny Suicides

Taffey Anderson wants people to know that she's not a book burner.

In fact, the Halsey mom who stirred up a First Amendment debate when she expressed her distaste for "The Book of Bunny Suicides," says she now plans to return the book to the Central Linn High School library.

"That's what I planned to do all along," Anderson told The Oregonian on Wednesday. "All of this stuff about not returning the book and burning it ... well, yeah, I said it. But I said it out of anger."

Anderson, 33, filed paperwork asking the school district to ban "Bunny Suicides" after her 13-year-old son, a Central Linn student, brought it home from school.

She initially told the Albany Democrat-Herald that she refused to return the book for a library committee to review it. Instead, she said she planned to burn it and any other copy that the school allowed back on the shelves.

Anderson said she now regrets making those comments. "It was the heat of the moment," she said. "That's not me. Everybody got everything twisted."

The 2003 book by British author Andy Riley is a collection of black-comedy cartoons showing adorable-yet-despondent white rabbits trying to end their lives in bizarre ways.

Anderson said her son, who usually brings home books about motorcycles and dirt bikes, checked out the book because his friends told him it was funny. But after reading the entire 80-page book, Anderson disagreed.

"None of it made me laugh," she said.

She took offense at what she saw as a book making light of animal cruelty and suicide.

School officials said they wanted to review Anderson's complaint but couldn't until she returned the book or purchased another for $13.

When the story about Anderson's apparent refusal to return the school's copy of the book spread across the country, enraged book lovers from as far away as Seattle contacted the school with offers to replace it. A Portland real estate agent drove to the Linn County school Tuesday to donate not only a new copy of "Bunny Suicides" but also several classic books that have shown up on banned-book lists in the past.

In fact, copies of "Bunny Suicides" seem to be reproducing like, well, you know. On Wednesday morning, the school received a copy of the book shipped via overnight mail from Amazon.com. Principal Julie Knoedler said the purchaser lives in Vancouver, according to the invoice. She said somebody else sent in a $20 check for the library.

"People have been generous," she said.

None of that was necessary, Anderson said. She said she plans to return the book at a parent-teacher conference scheduled for Friday.

As for what her son thinks of the ordeal, Anderson said, "He loves his mom and stands behind her." She said she hasn't received any blowback from neighbors, but it was clear that "everybody has their opinions."

The library serves both middle school and high school students. Anderson said she will be at Monday's school board meeting to make her case. At the same time, she has softened her stance, saying she wouldn't object to the book being held behind a check-out counter for more mature readers.

"That," she said, "I could live with."

I have read this book. I have enjoyed this book, blame it on my twisted sense of humor. My children have read the book....not one of them contemplated suicide by corkscrew afterward....and none of them felt the need to go and harm innocent bunnies. I can see why it wouldn't be an appropriate bed time story for a 5-year-old, but would it harm a 13-year-old?

On that note, I have read every book on the 'banned' list. I have allowed my children to read those books. I actually convinced them to read the books simply by mentioning they were on a banned book list. Catcher in the Rye is a favorite around here....

Should the book be placed behind a counter? In this day and age, should there even be any talk of banning or burning books? Would you allow your children to read this book? If not, why?

Personally, i'm against book banning. But and this is a BIG but..... Certain books should not be in a grade school or middle school. It is a parents responsibility to pay attention to what their children are reading. This mother apparently did. Good for her.

And it is the schools responsibility to make sure the reading material they have in their libraries are age appropriate.

I remember in 8th grade I got a copy of Alice in Wonderland. From the school library. But it wasn't like any fairy tale you've ever read to your children. It was the most x rated book i've ever read in my life!! (and yes, I read it)! Until my teacher noticed that I had passed it around and we were all talking about it.

The school called our parents and asked me where i'd gotten it. I said the library, the didn't believe me until they looked in the back of the book and saw the little pocket for the check out card with the school name on it.

Needless to say, they started checking thru all the books in the school.

I've been criticized for being a bit too permissive (I call it realistic) with my children. There was a time in my son's life where I would have jumped for joy if he had picked up any book! I got him interested in reading through comic books, and Bunny Suicides was one of them....and I can't think of any book that I would disapprove of after the age of 13.

And by telling a kid a book is bad, won't that make them want to read it even more?

The only thing I dont let my children read are smutty romance novels. My nine year old reads anything she can get her hands on and I let her. Because of this I think its helped her devolp the advanced reading level that she is on. My opinion is that this mother was a molly coddling cumcwat ( how ever you spell that ). Its something middle school kids find funny. Crap I find it to be funny. Let our children be children. Even if that means hidding moms smutty romance novel under the bed......I know I did. Us parents really need to learn how to stop over reacting about some things. I dont know about you guys but I think this kid will end up in therapy later because he has mommy issues.

You think the school would send me one of the copies they received to replace the other? I'm now dying to read it. It sounds kinda comical.
