CHICAGO -- Chicago police said a child's body found in an SUV is Jennifer Hudson's 7-year-old nephew, Julian King.

Police said the body was found shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday in the rear seat of an SUV parked in a neighborhood of brownstone homes and apartment buildings about 10 miles from the family's home. An autopsy was planned for Tuesday.

The vehicle matched the one sought in an Amber Alert issued after Hudson's mother and brother were found slain Friday, police Cmdr. Wayne Gulliford said. The Amber Alert was canceled Monday.

Chicago police have characterized the killings as "domestic related." They have been questioning William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson's sister Julia. She is the boy's mother, though Balfour is not his father.

Corrections Department records show Balfour is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.

Balfour's mother said Julia kicked her son out of the family home last winter, but denies her son had anything to do with the killings.

The Oscar-winning actress on Sunday offered a $100,000 reward for Julian's safe return.

Julian King had been missing since Friday.

Jennifer Hudson is asking anyone with information to contact Chicago police.

Unhappy Jennifer Hudson IDs nephew's body

Academy Award-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson stood again in the Cook County medical examiner's office, clutching the hands of loved ones as they identified the body of yet another slain relative -- her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King.

Even before family members arrived at the morgue Monday, they had been told that the three-day search for the 2nd grader had ended when his body was found slumped in the back seat of a sport-utility vehicle parked on a West Side street.

Amid visibly shaken family members in the medical examiner's office, Hudson bowed her head as if in prayer, then looked up.

"Yes, that's him," she told medical examiner officials as the family stood with her in an adjoining room and looked at a video monitor showing the boy's face.

The toll was inescapable: Hudson had lost her mother, her brother and now her nephew to a murderous rampage.

Even as the family gathered to answer one painful question, police searched the Chevrolet Suburban to answer others.

Officers questioned William Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of Julian's mother, on Friday night, but he stopped talking when police suggested he take a polygraph test, law-enforcement sources said. Balfour has not been charged in the slayings.

Although the sources say Balfour remains the focus of the investigation, the motive remains murky. Police say there have been ongoing disputes between him and his estranged wife, Julia Hudson, and her family.

Hudson's mother and brother had thrown him out of their Englewood house in the past, sources said. Julia Hudson also told police that Balfour had threatened the family. A source said Balfour told Julia Hudson he would kill her if he found out she had a boyfriend, despite the fact that he had other girlfriends.

In another incident, sources said, Julia Hudson arrived Friday morning at Sunrise Bus Co. on payday and discovered her wages had been garnished because of unpaid car payments. Sources said Balfour had taken her car months earlier but promised to make the payments on the vehicle. After seeing her pay stub, Julia Hudson called Balfour to complain about the unpaid bills, sources said.

Police believe that Balfour went to the Hudson family home Friday and shot through the front door, striking Hudson's brother, Jason. Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, came into the living room, screaming, and Balfour shot her as well, sources said. Shell casings were also found in the child's room, but there were no bullet holes or other signs of violence there. Much of the account of what police believe happened that day came from an interview with a girlfriend of Balfour's, sources said.

The sources also said Balfour's girlfriend contradicted his alibi and told police that he was involved in the slayings.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that more than one person was involved, though Supt. Jody Weis said Monday that Balfour was currently their only "person of interest."

On Sunday morning, officials transferred Balfour to Stateville Correctional Center, saying that because he was a suspect in the slayings, he violated conditions of parole for a 1999 conviction for attempted murder.

Over the weekend, the city scoured the area near the first shooting scene and a grid east of where the boy eventually was found. Officers and volunteers taped missing-person posters up in area shops, and vigils were held in Englewood.

But Julian was found Monday morning on the West Side after a tiny dog named Li'l Man howled and barked at an unfamiliar white SUV parked in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue.

The Chihuahua's reaction drew the attention of his owner, John Louden. The SUV matched the description of one police had sought in the killings since Friday. It remains unclear if police had canvassed the block, but some neighbors say they had seen the SUV since Friday. But no one called police before Monday.

Louden, 75, went inside and told his wife, Lynnette. Neighbors said the pace of drug dealing nearby often brought strange cars to the block. But when the Loudens saw the Suburban's license-plate number appear on television, Lynnette Louden called 911.

"The first thing I thought was," she said, " 'Lord, don't let the baby be in there.' "

    But he was.

Julian was found slumped over in the back seat of the Suburban, shot in the head. A bullet was found lodged in the vehicle, leading detectives to believe he had been shot in the vehicle. Police don't know precisely when he was killed, saying they are waiting for more information from the medical examiner's office. Police are hoping to find physical evidence at the two crime scenes that breaks the case.

A prayer service was held for the three slain family members in Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church, where one of Hudson's cousins is a minister.

And on the block where the shootings happened near 70th Street and Yale Avenue, about 100 friends and strangers gathered for a candlelight vigil of song and prayer Monday evening.

Surrounded by stuffed animals, balloons and posters that had grown throughout the day, the crowd sang Jennifer Hudson's song "Spotlight."

On behalf of the Hudson family, the Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church announced establishment of the Hudson-King Domestic Violence Prevention Fund, c/o Seaway Bank and Trust Co., P.O. Box 19522, Chicago, Ill., 60619."

Tribune reporters Liam Ford, Jeff Long, Azam Ahmed, Emma Graves Fitzsimmons, Stacy St. Clair, Jeff Coen, Dan P. Blake and James Janega contributed to this report.

Despite tragedy, Jennifer Hudson keeps smiling

"You will soon see Jennifer Hudson's smiling face again.

In fact, you’ll see her gorgeous grin everywhere, on billboards in New York and L.A. and in top magazines as part of the Gap's "Shine Your Own Star” holiday ad campaign.

She’s wearing the new red Gap Wintersoft turtleneck sweater in the ads

The ad campaign is going on despite the recent brutal shooting deaths of her mother, brother and nephew.

While it might seem unseemly for Jennifer to be looking so happy so soon, the ads were shot several months ago. She's part of the long-planned Gap holiday campaign that also features Jason Bateman, Mary-Louise Parker and Mila Kunis.

Olive Doyne, a spokeswoman forthe Gap, says the company gave Jennifer the option to back out of the campaign, but she wanted "to be a part of it."

Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing on the triple murder. William Balfour, the only suspect in the case, reportedly told his girlfriend he was involved in the slayings. He is still in custody."

Balfour Arrested in Hudson Family Killings

"CHICAGO (Dec. 1) - Police arrested the estranged brother-in-law of Jennifer Hudson on Monday in the deaths of the entertainer's mother, brother and young nephew, taking him from a prison where he had been held on a suspected parole violation.
William Balfour was arrested at Stateville Correctional Center and released to detectives as he awaited formal charges in the shooting deaths of the singer and Oscar-winning actress' relatives, said Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond.

Until Monday, police had identified Balfour, 27, only as a "person of interest" in the investigation. He had not been charged by late Monday afternoon, said Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.
The bodies of Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson, were discovered Oct. 24 at the family's home on the South Side of Chicago. The body of 7-year-old Julian King was found three days later in a sport utility vehicle on the West Side. All three had been shot.
Police took Balfour into custody the same day the bodies of Donerson and Hudson were discovered. After 48 hours — the longest Chicago police can hold a person without charges — Balfour was taken by the Illinois Department of Corrections on the suspected parole violation.
Balfour — Julian's stepfather and the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's older sister, Julia Hudson — served seven years for a 1999 attempted murder and vehicular hijacking conviction.
His mother, Michelle Balfour of Chicago, has denied that her son had anything to do with the deaths. Telephone numbers for Balfour's mother and sister were disconnected Monday."

Sister's ex killed Hudson relatives in jealous rage, prosecutor says

"The estranged brother-in-law of singer and actress Jennifer Hudson killed her relatives in a jealous rage because he thought his wife was seeing another man, a prosecutor said Wednesday at a hearing in which bail was denied.
William Balfour, here in an undated photo, is the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia.

William Balfour, 27, faces three counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Hudson's mother, brother and nephew in October. He is also charged with one count of home invasion.

Balfour is the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia Hudson, and the stepfather of 7-year-old Julian King, who was found dead in a car near the Chicago, Illinois, home where the other two victims were killed.

Dressed in a neon-yellow jail jumpsuit, Balfour listened as prosecutor LuAnn Snow portrayed him as a jealous man who warned Julia Hudson that "her family would suffer if he saw her with other men."

Balfour's mother, Michelle Davis-Balfour, listened behind bulletproof glass in the area reserved for spectators.

Snow said Balfour was at the Hudson family home on Chicago's South Side the morning of the murders, the day after Julia Hudson celebrated her birthday.

Balfour accused her of having a relationship with another man because he saw a birthday present and concluded it was a gift from a boyfriend.
    Don't Miss

Snow said Julia Hudson left the home and as she drove away, she saw Balfour walking toward his car.

Prosecutors allege that friends took him to a gas station, because Balfour's car had a steering problem, and then back to his car at the Hudson house.

That was when Balfour went into the Hudson home and shot Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, in the living room, Snow told Judge Raymond Myles.

Next, Snow said, he shot Jason Hudson, 27, who was still in his bed.

Then, she said, Balfour forced his stepson, Julian, into Jason Hudson's white Suburban.

Prosecutors say Balfour later killed the boy in the car with a single bullet to his head that went through the floor of the SUV. They say the boy's body was wrapped in a "new shower curtain that has been identified as coming from the [Hudson] family home."

Authorities later found a handgun near the vehicle. Deputy Police Superintendent Steve Peterson said in a news conference Tuesday, when the charges were announced, that the gun was linked to the shootings.

Balfour was first detained for questioning on October 24, the day Donerson and Jason Hudson were found shot to death. Authorities said at the time that they were holding Balfour for an unspecified parole violation.

Balfour "has made statements about the investigation," Peterson said. "However, at this time, we don't want to go into what was said."

Police Superintendent Jody Weis said Hudson's family was "a key partner in this investigation, cooperating with detectives every step of the way under very stressful and painful circumstances." Members of the community also assisted in various ways, he said."

New details in murders of Hudson's family members
CHICAGO— New details are emerging about the murders of Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew.

The singer has been mostly private about the murders in October of 2008
The bodies of Darnell Donerson and Jason Hudson were found in the family's home in Englewood.

Nephew Julian King was found in an abandoned car.

Hudson's estranged brother-in-law, William Balfour, is charged with the murders.

New court documents show Hudson told police that Balfour had threatened and harassed Julia Hudson is the past.

Hudson's family also suspected Balfour stole a 45-Caliber handgun from their home. That's the same Caliber as the gun used in the murders.

Balfour's trial is set to begin in April.

I hope the fucker Balfour gets the DP.
What a terrible, great loss for one family. My deepest sympathies to the family.

Rest in peace, Darnell Donerson, Jason Hudson and little Julian King.

Sorry, SilverHalo, but if this all happened in Chicago, there won't be any death penalty, no matter how much he deserves it. It was abolished there in March of last year.

Trial begins for Hudson murder suspect
April 5, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Jury selection began Thursday for a man charged with murdering three members of Jennifer Hudson's family.

William Balfour is accused of killing Hudson's mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.
    [...]
A dramatically different looking Balfour sat at the defense table Thursday. Gone is the wild hair and blank stare seen his mugshot. They have been replaced by a fresh haircut, crisp white shirt and yellow tie. He said "good morning" to the 150 prospective jurors when introduced by the judge. They replied with the same.

The task for the next few days is to winnow the field down to 12 jurors and six alternates.

"It's probably the most single important factor of a jury trial," said criminal defense attorney Sam Adam Jr.

The trial is expected to last one month. It will cover Balfour's rocky relationship with Julia Hudson. Court filings say she'll testify. "On July 31, 2008, after Julia told [Balfour] that they were going to get divorced in the morning, [he] told her again that, 'If you leave me, I'm going to kill you. You will be the last. I'll kill your family first,'" filings say.

Prosecutors claim Balfour "made these threats at least 25 times" in the months leading up to the murders of Julia Hudson's 7-year-old son, brother and mother. The killings drew national attention because of their connection to singing sensation Jennifer Hudson.

Opening statements set in trial of man accused of killing Hudson relatives
Chicago (CNN) -- Opening statements are set for Monday in the trial of a man accused of killing relatives of actress and singer Jennifer Hudson.

Last week, 18 people were selected to serve on the jury in the murder trial.

The group includes 10 women and eight men, including six alternates.

The trial comes more than three years after Hudson's mother, brother and nephew were killed.

William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson's sister Julia, is accused of fatally shooting Hudson's mother and brother inside their Chicago home in October 2008. The body of Hudson's 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, was found three days later inside an abandoned vehicle.

Balfour, who was Julian's stepfather, has also been charged with one count of home invasion.

The judge has said he expects the trial to last three to four weeks.
    [...]
Prosecutors have portrayed Balfour as a jealous man who murdered three people in rage at the thought that his wife had a boyfriend.

The deaths took place a year after Hudson, who rose to fame as a contestant on "American Idol," won an Oscar for her role in the movie "Dreamgirls."

In a recent interview with CNN's Piers Morgan, Hudson reflected on the life of her mother, Darnell Donerson.

"My mother was a very wise and strong person. I feel like she raised us well, and she prepared me well, and so that's what I live by," she said.

Hudson, who is on the witness list, is expected to attend the upcoming trial.

Her career has continued to blossom and remain varied since her relatives' deaths. Her recent milestones include penning a memoir detailing her struggles with her weight, being cast to play Nelson Mandela's ex-wife Winnie in an upcoming movie, releasing a new album and singing a well-received tribute to Whitney Houston at the most recent Grammy Awards show in February.

Jennifer Hudson testifies at trial of man accused of killing relatives
Chicago (CNN) -- Actress and singer Jennifer Hudson testified Monday in the trial of a man accused of killing her mother, brother and nephew.

She identified the defendant, William Balfour, the estranged husband of her sister Julia.

"None of us wanted her to marry him," she said. "We did not like how he treated her."

Hudson, dressed in black, also testified about her relationship with her mother, saying she spoke with her mom every day and slept in the same bed with her until she was 16.

Through tears, she talked about the last time she saw her family together and the day she found out about the murders.

"I did everything in my power to get home," Hudson said. She testified she identified her relatives' bodies for authorities.

During cross examination, the singer-actress returned to the subject of Balfour.

"Where he was, I tried not to be," Hudson said.

Eighteen people have been selected to serve on the jury in the murder trial: 10 women and eight men. The group includes six alternates.

The trial comes more than three years after Hudson's relatives were killed.

Chicago (CNN) -- More than two dozen people filled a Chicago courtroom Tuesday, listening to testimony in the case of the murdered relatives of Grammy-winning singer Jennifer Hudson.

Hudson was seated beside her fiance as witnesses recalled the harrowing events of a rainy day in October 2008,[...]
Her former brother-in-law, William Balfour, is charged with their murders. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Sgt. Richard Dowling, the first police officer to arrive at the murder scene, said he found Hudson's mother lying face down with a gunshot wound to her back. Dowling next found her brother on a bed, he testified, though he recalled that he had difficulty identifying the man because he had been wrapped in blankets.

Police searched the home for Julian, issuing an Amber Alert when their initial sweep failed.

Police officer Jennifer Bryk testified that she was next to Hudson's sister, Julia, who at the time was separated from Balfour, when he called her after the attack.

Bryk instructed the woman "to act normal" in her conversation to help authorities locate Balfour.

Later Tuesday, an acquaintance of Balfour's, Abdullah Smith, 37, testified that the defendant had confided in him, telling him that he was having marital problems.

Balfour showed him a text message from Julia Hudson, he said, that told him she didn't love him anymore.

Smith also recalled how Balfour once told him that he wished he could beat up Jason Hudson but never heard of him threatening his wife, Donerson or Julian.

Several gruesome crime scene photos were entered into evidence on Tuesday, the second day of testimony. They showed the bodies of Hudson's mother and brother.

Mother of man accused of killing family of Jennifer Hudson lashes out at actress
"Why the hell are they looking at me?" the mother of murder defendant William Balfour said as Hudson walked by

The mother of the man accused of murdering Jennifer Hudson's three relatives snapped at the Oscar winner during a break in courtroom testimony Friday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

"Why the hell are they looking at me?" the mother of murder defendant William Balfour said as Hudson and her sister were standing directly in front of her.

    [...]
Earlier in the day, an FBI agent told jurors that cell phone records show Balfour was near the Hudson home on the morning the singer's 57-year-old mother Darnell Donerson and 29-year-old brother Jason Hudson were slain.

Follow-up witness William Graham, a 71-year-old local retiree, testified that he saw Balfour driving a white SUV through the Hudson neighborhood that day and made a mental note because Balfour usually drove a green Chrysler.

Hudson's 7-year-old nephew Julian King was later found shot to death inside the abandoned vehicle several miles away.

Balfour, who has pleaded not guilty, told police he wasn't in the area[...]

Court denies Jennifer Hudson gets star treatment at trial of man charged in relatives

CHICAGO—Jennifer Hudson arrives each day at the trial of the man accused of killing three of her close family members with her personal bodyguards in tow. She uses a secret entrance to elude photographers, eats in private and waits for proceedings to start in normally off-limits judge’s chambers.

The Oscar winner, recently named one of the world’s most beautiful women by People magazine, slips from the courtroom during particularly gory testimony.

Do the accommodations for the actress and singer add up to special star treatment?

“Absolutely not,” said Irv Miller, a judge’s liaison at the trial, which is into its second full week.

Most accommodations, he insisted, are courtesies routinely extended to victims enduring the grim ordeal of sitting through a murder trial. Others, he conceded, are necessary because Hudson — a 2004 “American Idol” finalist and 2007 Oscar winner for her role in “Dreamgirls” — is a celebrity.

“Star status means things have to be a little different,” he said. “You just can’t have a celebrity walking about, going to the cafeteria — people running up to ask for autographs.”

Others, however, say the courthouse has gone too far.

“It’s outrageous,” Manny Medrano, a Los Angeles-based defence attorney and former television reporter who regularly comments on high-profile cases. “It sends the wrong signal to the world — that if you are a celebrity, you won’t be treated like everyone.”

Her treatment may be a result of Chicago’s relative lack of experience with celebrity cases. In Southern California, said Medrano, people expect celebrities to be treated at court like everyone else.

The unease of the Hudson trial judge shows. He spent months compiling special decorum rules, including bans on tweets from court, and appears to eye journalists’ every move in his courtroom. He threw one out for half a day after spotting her holding a pen in the corner of her mouth, deeming it a distraction.

The only recent examples of stars at Chicago’s criminal courts building were the 2008 child pornography trial of R&B singer R. Kelly and talk-show host Oprah Winfrey serving on a jury in a 2005 murder case.

Winfrey was allowed to use a hidden entrance. R. Kelly, whose trial and eventual acquittal took place in the same courtroom as the Hudson murders trial, came and left through the same front door as everyone else.

Miller said Kelly’s treatment can’t be compared to Hudson’s.

“He was a criminal defendant,” he said. “So, he wasn’t going to be accorded privileges. Not only is Hudson not a defendant, she’s a prosecution witness.”

He also said it’s not uncommon for witnesses at sensitive trials to enter through a back way.

Hudson was the first person to testify in the prosecution’s case against William Balfour, who has pleaded not guilty to murdering Hudson’s mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew. Prosecutors say he shot Hudson’s family members in a jealousy-fueled act of vengeance against his estranged wife, Hudson’s sister.

Friend says Jennifer Hudson's brother had only one enemy: Murder suspect William Balf

A maintenance man who grew up with singer Jennifer Hudson's family on Chicago's South Side testified Thursday that he could think of only one man who would have wanted to harm Hudson's brother: William Balfour.
    [..]
Dressed in a black leather jacket and white T-shirt, Williams, 27, testified in a deep baritone, sometimes lapsing into slang that was difficult to decipher. He said Jason Hudson sold only modest amounts of cocaine called "dime bags," paid cash for his supply and did not owe anyone money.

When Assistant State's Attorney James McKay asked if Jason Hudson had any enemies, Williams pointed toward Balfour and snapped, "Besides that cat sittin' over there, no." Chuckles rippled through the courtroom.

    [...]
Balfour's attorneys have suggested that investigators, influenced by Hudson's celebrity, focused immediately on Balfour and ignored possible links in the slayings to Jason Hudson's drug business.

On Thursday, Williams recounted how violence on the block of the Hudson residence had escalated in the summer of 2008, leading to "a few shootouts," one of which left him with a graze wound to the arm when someone shot at him while he stood on his porch.

Williams broke down on the witness stand when he testified about learning about the slayings from a friend that afternoon.

"She told me the worst thing that I ever heard to this day, actually in my whole life," said Williams, bowing his head and wiping tears from his eyes with the heels of his hands. After a moment, Williams looked up with tears still in his eyes. When McKay asked if he needed a break, Williams sniffled and said, "Naw, I'm good, man."

In the courtroom gallery, Jennifer Hudson used a tissue to dab her eyes and later leaned her head on her sister's shoulder as Williams continued.

In other testimony Thursday, two experts testified that Balfour's fingerprints were nowhere to be found on any of the dozens of items inventoried at the crime scenes, including the alleged murder weapon. The .45-caliber gun was found a few days after the slayings in a weedy West Side lot about a block from where Julian's body was found inside a SUV stolen from the Hudson home.

Anastasia Petruncio, who at the time worked as an Illinois State Police forensic analyst, told jurors that the absence of fingerprints would not be uncommon if the killer wore gloves or the items had been left exposed to the weather.

    Hudson murder trial rolls along
Developments in the case against the singer's former brother-in-law
Last week Cook County prosecutors continued to speed through their case against William Balfour, putting on nearly 40 witnesses against Jennifer Hudson's former brother-in-law,
    [...]
•Brittany Acoff-Howard, who said she was like a little sister to Balfour, testified he asked her to lie about his whereabouts on the day of the murders at the Hudson family's South Side home. Acoff-Howard said Balfour told her, "If anybody asks you, I've been out west all day."

•Reginald Jones testified he bought drugs from Hudson's brother and once helped him cook cocaine into crack in the family's kitchen. Balfour's attorneys have suggested the murders were linked to the brother's drug business.
A series of forensic experts testified that neither Balfour's DNA nor fingerprints were found on the alleged murder weapon or in the SUV in which Hudson's nephew was found dead.

•Next, prosecutors are expected to call detectives who questioned Balfour after his arrest at a girlfriend's West Side home. An expert is also expected to testify that Balfour's CTA card was not used that day, rebutting his alibi that he had taken a train to the woman's home. The prosecution could wrap up its case by Wednesday. The defense could then present evidence.

Witness: Suspect 'in panic' on day of Hudson murders

May 7, 2012 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Prosecutors called a friend of William Balfour, the man accused of murdering three members of Jennifer Hudson's family, to testify in his trial Monday. The friend talked about a conversation he had with Balfour on the day of the killings.

Prosecutors, who are close to winding up their case, arrived in court Monday morning for the 10th day of testimony in the Balfour trial. Their first witness, Quincy Brown, was a close friend of Balfour's during the months leading up to the day Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew were killed.
Two days before the murders, Brown testified that he saw Balfour with the gun prosecutors say he used to kill Darnell Donnerson, Jason Hudson and 7-year-old Julian King.

Brown said Balfour pulled out the pistol, slammed it on the table, and twirled in circles as he told Brown how much he hated Jason Hudson. The murder weapon belongs to Jason Hudson. Prosecutors say Balfour stole the gun weeks before the crime.

On the afternoon of the murders, Brown told the jury he spoke to Balfour on the phone three times. When asked by the prosecutor what Balfour's tone of voice was, Brown replied, "he was speed talking ... he was in panic, in a rush."
Brown said Balfour called him, desperately looking for help to fix his car. During the call, Julia Hudson beeped in on call waiting. Brown said she asked Balfour why he killed her mother and brother. Brown testified he said to Balfour, "are you for real, why would she blame you of all people?''' Brown said Balfour responded by saying, "because I got into it with the (expletive). Brown said Balfour was referring to Jason Hudson.

Brown is in the process of serving a federal prison sentence. He told the jury that prosecutors did not give him a deal for his testimony. Under cross examination, Brown also said that he didn't even talk to police until August of last year because at the time of the murders he was told by Balfour's friends not to talk to the police.

Late Monday afternoon, prosecutors played Balfour's videotaped police interview, which was done on the night of the murders. That interview does not contain a confession, but prosecutors say it does contain many lies.

On the day of the murders, Balfour was taken into custody around 6 p.m. and detectives interrogated him about his whereabouts that day. He said he went to the West Side where he spent the day at his girlfriend's house. A CTA employee said there is no videotape that shows Balfour at any bus stop or station and in addition there was no activity on Balfour's card that day.

Prosecutors allege that Balfour drove Jason Hudson's SUV to the West Side and that the SUV and the murder weapon were found there a couple of days later.

Jury begins deliberations in Jennifer Hudson family killings
Reuters) - Not a single fingerprint or scrap of DNA was found to prove who murdered three family members of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson in 2008, but prosecutors said there was overwhelming circumstantial evidence to convict her jealous brother-in-law as the jury began deliberations on Wednesday.

Hudson, her head bowed at times when graphic photographs were shown to the jury, sat with family members in the Chicago courtroom.

The defense attorney for accused killer William Balfour poked holes in the prosecution's mostly circumstantial case in her final statement and accused the police of concocting evidence to convict her client.

"They were trying to convict a pre-chosen defendant," defense attorney Amy Thompson told the Cook County Criminal Court jury in her closing statement following two weeks of testimony.

    [..]
Balfour's lawyer said police fixated on Balfour, while the real killer was an unknown enemy of Hudson's drug-dealing brother, Jason Hudson, whose body was found in his bed, shot twice in the head while he slept.

Donerson, armed with a broom, was shot three times, and Julian was killed in the back seat of Jason Hudson's sports utility vehicle. His body was not discovered until three days later in the vehicle, which had been abandoned.

Jennifer Hudson had testified on the first day of the trial that she had never liked Balfour, and begged her sister not to marry him.

She flew back to Chicago on October 24, 2008, after learning that her mother and brother were dead in the South Side home they had shared, and her nephew was missing. She ultimately identified all three of their bodies.

Jennifer Hudson burst on the music scene in 2004 when she performed on the television singing contest "American Idol." She subsequently won a Grammy for her debut album, and an Academy Award for her supporting role in the movie "Dreamgirls."

    PROSECUTOR PAINTS JEALOUS STALKER

Hudson hung her head or buried it in her fiancé David Otunga's shoulder when prosecutor Jennifer Bagby showed gruesome photographs of the victims.

Balfour, Bagby said, was obsessed with his estranged wife, Julia, stalking her and consumed with jealousy, though he had several other girlfriends and the couple still occasionally had sex.

The night before the murders, prosecutors said, Balfour sent her text messages while in bed with one of his girlfriends, then went to the Hudson family home in Chicago's tough Englewood neighborhood to try to catch her with her new lover.

Using cell phone records and witness accounts, prosecutors painstakingly traced Balfour's whereabouts for the jury and how he enlisted friends to help him create an alibi. Balfour even went so far as to be purposely videotaped at a gas station, they said.

Prosecutors pointed to Julia Hudson's testimony that Balfour had frequently issued threats, saying he would kill her family first, then her. She had been angry with him the morning of the murders, blaming him for having her wages as a bus driver garnished.

Balfour changed his clothes three times the day of the murders, and avoided telling Julia Hudson where he was when she called after the bodies were found, prosecutors said. He had turned off his cellphone for four hours, giving him time to get rid of evidence and wipe down the discarded gun and stolen SUV, they said.

"If you're innocent, you get back to your wife. You man up," prosecutor James McKay said, gnashing his teeth in anger. "A child is missing."

"A guy who changed his clothes three times, do you really expect him to leave fingerprints? To leave DNA?" McKay said.

just curiousity but I havent seen where they addressed Julians death ( I may have missed it)
Has it ever been mentioned if he was alive a day or 2 or the 3 he was missing?
Or was he killed same time as them,
like why leave 2 bodies there and take a 3rd to dump somewhere else??

Jennifer Hudson’s former brother-in-law was convicted Friday of shooting and killing the Academy Award winner’s mother, brother and nephew.

Cook County jurors returned guilty verdicts against William Balfour after about 18 hours of deliberation over three days.

Jennifer Hudson had her head down when the verdict was announced. She then talked to her fiance, David Otunga, who put his arm around her. She then began to get emotional.

She was soon taken out of the courtroom — but reporters were not allowed to follow her.

Balfour, who turned 31 on Thursday, had no reaction. His family, however, began tearing up after the verdicts.

In addition to the murders, Balfour was also convicted of home invasion, aggravated kidnapping, residential burglary and possession of a stolen motor vehicle for the 2008 crimes.
    [...]

Balfour now faces mandatory life in prison.

Chicago (CNN) -- Months after he was found guilty of murdering entertainer Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew, William Balfour on Tuesday was handed down three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole plus 120 years, Penny Mateck of the Cook County Sheriff's office said.
"This significant sentence is appropriate given the heinous and inhumane nature of these crimes which demanded the full force of justice," Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez said in a statement.
In May, a jury found Balfour guilty on three counts of first-degree murder and four other counts related to the 2008 deaths of Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson; her brother, Jason Hudson; and Hudson's nephew, 7-year-old Julian King....
