Carmen Casanova, off her meds, tried to kill her daughter

A 12-year-old girl survived a harrowing five-hour fight for her life in her Bullfinch Drive apartment by grabbing a vase and hitting her mother in the head early on the morning of Sept. 20, a prosecutor said yesterday.

Carmen Casanova, 44, was arrested Wednesday after her release from a Boston hospital and arraigned yesterday in Lawrence District Court on charges of assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault and battery on a child under 14, and attempted murder.

Prosecutor Jessica Strasnick said the 12-year-old girl told police the events began when her mother woke her out of a sound sleep about 3 a.m. screaming about the devil, and tried to smother her with a pillow. The girl said her mother dropped the pillow and started choking her with her hands, yelling that she was the daughter of Satan, Strasnick said.

The girl said she broke free and her mother chased her and fought with her throughout the fourth-floor apartment. At one point, the girl said her mother bit her finger and grabbed her breast as if she was trying to rip it off, Strasnick said.

The fight ended in the family room when the girl grabbed a vase and struck Casanova in the back of the head, the girl said. She then barricaded herself in her bedroom and called police for help.

When police arrived, the daughter answered the door and police pulled her into the hallway. The girl had a swollen left eye and a fingernail scratch under the eye, and finger marks on her neck and body.

Seeing her condition and being told Casanova had a knife, the officers drew their service weapons and entered the apartment, where they found Casanova in the bathroom.

She was placed in handcuffs on the living room floor, and officers saw her hair appeared to be matted with blood, police said. She told an officer she was a good mother, then lost consciousness, according to police reports. She was released from the handcuffs when medical personnel arrived.

Casanova was airlifted to a Boston hospital, and the girl was taken to Boston Children's Hospital.

The girl told police she had screamed for help in English and Spanish, that she never meant to really hurt her mother, and that her mother had not been taking her medication.

Police found the apartment in disarray with blood stains in several rooms with overturned furniture, several large bloodstains on one of the small single beds in a bedroom, and they also found a knife wrapped in a towel on the blood-stained bed, Strasnick said.

She asked that Casanova be held without bail pending a hearing to determine whether she poses a danger to the community and should remain in jail pending her trial.

But Casanova's lawyer Geoffrey Dubosque, appointed to argue bail only, sought her release without bail or on personal surety.

"In this case it is clear that what happened is unclear," he said. "It is important to note the mother got hit in the head with a vase and was transferred to a Boston hospital."

He told the court that the police investigation on the morning of the incident determined neighbors had heard nothing. Dubosque also said the state had not established probable cause to arrest Casanova.

Judge Thomas Brennan ordered her held without bail and to return to court today for status and the appointment of a lawyer to handle the case.

He granted Strasnick's motion for the dangerousness hearing and the date for that hearing, expected to be held next week, will be set today after appointment of counsel.

The daughter is in the custody of the state Department of Social Services.

Good God....what meds was she not taking? My guess....schizophrenia...
WTF would har attorney even WANT her released to anywhere except a mental hospital? She presents a clear and present danger to both herself and others. She's safer in custody. Although I think that she should be in a mental hospital not in jail.

I don't understand people who don't take their medication. How hard is it to take a pill and retain your sanity for another day? I've had times in my life when I took medications, and although I hated it, I did it.

I wonder how many of them think that since they feel ok, they will be ok without taking the meds.....

I'm sure that's what it is. That was one of the first things my psychiatrist covered with me. That the medication is part of a routine, and before I stop the routine I have to discuss it with her. Eventually I felt like the meds were hindering more than they were helping, and I DID discuss it with her, and we came up with an exit strategy--now I'm pill free. But I did it the right way.

Ok, first off, to say "it is clear that what happened is unclear" just sounds uneducated. This man is an idiot. Then, to insinuate that somehow the crazy mother is the victim is ridiculous, and insulting to the poor child who had her ass beat by her mom. How fucking scary would it be to have your mother wake you out of a sound sleep screaming you were the devil? This lawyer is an assclown of the highest order.

When they say what happened is unclear, I assumed they meant that's because they have only had the opportunity to speak with the 12yr old. We only have her word that mom went crazy. The mom, with the blow to the head, appears to have passed out. I mean, while the kid's story seems most likely, mom may wake up and say, omg, my daughter attacked me, and had a knife, and I fought back, and finally she bludgeoned me in the head with a vase so I locked myself in the bathroom. I'm a good mom, why would she do this? So, without further investigation and questioning the other party involved here - it's not clear what actually happened yet.

Aw Maggie, you'd be surprised how many depressed, bi-polar ect. People there are that don't take their meds. Either they can't afford it or because they may not be on the med best suited to them, it doesn't help that much anyway and they just forget to keep taking it and then something like this happens.

They need to not let her continue to raise her daughter though. Because just because she's sick, doesn't mean her daughter should have to pay the price.

I understand some people can't afford medications, but the daughter said she just hadn't been taking them--which to me, implies choice, since there was at least one other person in that house who was aware that she'd stopped taking them. And that's what I think is dangerous.

Being someone on medications, one of the problems with mental illness and medications is that often when the person feels "good" and things are "normal" they tend to forget that it is the medication that makes them that way. Thus, they start to skip doses, then all together stop taking them. In the end, you have things like this when it is out of their system and there is nothing left to control the neuro-receptors in the brain. I go on and off my anti-depressants all the time, especially before the situation I am currently. I would start to feel better, balanced and so forth. I hate that I have to be on medications, and thus I would try to ween myself off them only to find that I need to be back on them. It is extremely common with people who have mental illnesses.

    1. Does this mean you are a minor?

    2. I must have missed it, because I read not one post accusing your mom of being an alcoholic or a druggie. In fact I see no insults at all. Weird.

Yeah, it said she was 12 when it happened, so now she might be 15 or 16. Full of her power with her iPod and full of nasty words, too. I expect that, in print anyway, she doesn't understand anything unless there's a foul word integrated into every fourth word. But, a moderator is likely to come here and save her from her own worst instincts, so I suppose it's not worth translating a response to the little cunt that she'd understand. Isn't 3 1/2 years like an eon on the internet?

Since I am on medication, I give myself the right to judge.
It is far easier to take medication and be sane.
