On Monday afternoon, police took a report from someone representing the Elks lodge alleging the theft of $80 worth of liquor from the Jones Avenue clubhouse, said Capt. Janet Champlin. Based on witness information, investigating Officer Duane Jacques identified the alleged thief as Richard Murphy, 19, of 37 Ingalls St., Lynn, Mass., said the police captain.
Murphy is currently incarcerated at the Rockingham County House of Corrections on four felony charges alleging he walked into a rented hotel room with a container of gasoline in one hand and a lighter in the other, while threatening his relatives. Police say Murphy was arrested following a physical altercation among family members and charged with felony criminal mischief, reckless conduct, disorderly conduct and criminal threatening, as well as a violation-level charge of unlawful possession of alcohol.
Police do not have a motive for the alleged behavior.
Murphy was free on bail for two pending felony charges out of Massachusetts at the time of his arrest at the Portsmouth Best Western, say police, and he is being held on $5,000 cash bail.
