http://www.wreg.com/Global/story.asp...nav=menu93_2_3The injuries in this case occurred on a Friday... but the child's mother apparently waited 5 whole days before getting treatment for the second degree burns which covered most of her son's backside.
Investigator Mark Whitten says he's never had a case as emotional as the one he found in an Oxford hospital.
"Both the nurse and the social worker had tears in their eyes and I just knew at that point this was not gonna be a good situation." said Whitten.
Then they showed him a 2 ½ year old boy covered in burned skin, and in severe pain.
Whitten said it looked consistent with child abuse he'd seen in medical literature. "It about looks like current with the pamphlet that the child may have been dropped in hit water." "Intentionally?" "Yes sir." said the investigator.
But the investigation couldn't prove child abuse. What it could prove, was that the boy's mother, Amy Marie Lenard, neglected her son's injuries, which she said occurred under the care of her boyfriend. "What we charged Ms. Lenard with was actually depriving him of necessary health care for a 2 ½ year old who had 2nd degree burns over 20% of his body." said prosecutor Jay Hale.
Doctors say 2nd degree burns are among the most painful of all.
Testimony showed Lenard by-passed the local Batesville Hospital in favor of taking the child 20 miles down the road to Oxford. The boy was in such bad shape doctors had to give him narcotics to get his clothes off him, clothes which we are told, stuck to his skin.
Lenard faces prison time and very possibly the loss of all three of her children.
And Whitten said all could have been prevented with a call for help. "Call the Sheriff's office, call the Department of Human Services, call the Police Department. Someone will help you and they will help you immediately." he said.
Lenard faces sentencing next month. Prosecutors say they'll likely ask for the maximum penalty... 5 years in prison.
I can only find one article on this case. No mention of the alleged boyfriend that was taking care of the child. I know that she was arrested on the 16th, so the injury happened on the 10th of this month.
