Woman changes name to a URL

Woman changes name to a URL to protest animal dissections

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina - You can call her CutoutDissection.com, Cutout for short, but just don't call her Jennifer.

The former Jennifer Thornburg - whose driver's license now reads Dissection.com, Cutout - wanted to do something to protest animal dissections in schools.

The 19-year-old's new name is also the web address for an anti-dissection page of the site for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, where she is interning.

"I normally do have to repeat my name several times when I am introducing myself to someone new," she told The Asheville Citizen-Times. "Once they find out what my name is, they want to know more about what the website is about."

The Asheville High School graduate who is working in Virginia said she began opposing dissections in middle school after a class assignment to cut up a chicken wing made her uncomfortable. She helped create a policy at her high school that allows students who object to dissections to complete an alternative assignment.

Despite her legally changing the name, she said most of her family members still call her Jennifer.

"It will take me a while," said her dad, Duane Thornburg, who lives in Daytona Beach, Florida. "She's still Jennifer to me. I understand why she's done it. Believe it or not, I totally respect it."

A CD showing the treatment of animals before they are dissected finally convinced him to support his daughter's cause, he said.

So...would you change your name for a cause? I'd love to see this woman's name in a phone book. I'd question her mental state...but she's a member of PETA so I think that says just about everything.

No. That's going a bit too far for me...I'll just pass out flyers and make protest signs!

Fuck no, I wouldn't change my name. Even if the cause is eternal devotion, aka "marriage", I'm not changing this dope ass name for anything. And why should I? My parents took great care in picking it out.

If my name was Jennifer, though, I might consider it. For once in her life, this girl is original. :p

(No offense to any of the Jennifers in the world.)

Jennifer is such a nightmare-inducing name. It's like the female Benjamin. Ben, Benn, Benny, Benji blah! Jennie, Jenny, Jenifer, Jeniffer, Jen, Jenn...Jesus it goes on and on. I too would have changed my name (not to a URL though).

At least I have three variations - Clara, Clair and Clare.

I think you'd make an excellent dreamindemon.com, Athena. Demon, dreamin.com would be the name!

I'm just not that dedicated. I'm sure we've got a Jennifer around here that will volunteer, though.

Definitely NO, my name is different and not that many out their but Rosalind Russell. I was given it at birth and will die with it.

She went a little over the edge with her support.

You know, I've never met another Athena in person. I've heard of people named Athena (or Athina, like the Onassis), even met them on MySpace...But never in person. Your friend has great taste.

And I think anything is a better name than "cutout". =P

Athena, if you spawn you should name your child "Persephone", or "Hades", maybe even "Ares". If you had twins I recommend "Apollo" and "Artemis".

You know what's funny? I've liked the name Persephone since I was a little-ass kid. I like the name Eurydice even more. They'd even have cute nicknames - Persee and Eury.

The boyfriend's not yet on board, though. Especially since I want my kids to keep my last name. His is Harper. Just doesn't jive with exotic first names.

That would be especially cute here in Finland as "perse" means ass in Finnish...! I'm not so sure with that Eury though as it reminds Euro and as you probably know that currency is not so awfully popular right now, especially thanks to our Greek friends...
