    VP Debate 2008!!

Oh my me, I am so excited about tonight!!! When was the last time anyone was excited about a VP debate? Never many years ago?

I cannot wait to see Palin tell Gwen Ifill she'll "have to get back to her." And I cannot wait to see Biden use long, run-on sentences. Maybe he'll even tell her she's ugly! Oh heaven!

Speaking of which. You guys have to see this video on CNN. It's the latest ad campaign from McCain talking about Biden's famous politically incorrest statements. All of this is done to gear up for tonight.

(CNN) — John McCain's campaign released a Web ad hours before the vice presidential debate that highlights embarrassing statements from Joe Biden and sarcastically asks what the Delaware senator might say Thursday night.

The McCain campaign has been touting Biden's debating skills in an effort to raise expectations of the Democratic VP candidate ahead of his only face-off with rival Sarah Palin — but takes the opposite approach in the new video.

"What might Joe Biden say at tonight's debate? Anything's possible," the announcer says before clips of past Biden gaffes are shown, including a 1987 town-hall where he told a voter, "I think I probably have a much higher IQ than you do."

Other now-famous Biden moments shown in the ad include his off-the-cuff statement two years ago that "you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent…I'm not joking."

The ad also includes newly-minted gaffes from the campaign trail, including a September rally during which he accidentally told a man in a wheel chair to "stand up…let them see you," and a town-hall one month ago when he praised Hillary Clinton and said she "might have been a better pick than me."

"Ready to gaffe? Yes. Ready to lead? No," the ad's announcer says.

Last week, the RNC launched “The Joe Biden Gaffe Timeline,” a Web site that features “an interactive timeline, map, and videos to track Biden’s most noteworthy fumbles and missteps since becoming Barack Obama’s running mate.”
    Video at the link: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com...ead-of-debate/

I'd comment on the dirty tactics of the McCain camp, but I think we all get that now. Do we actually expect anything less? Have we seen one ad of Obama's dissing Sarah Palin and her recent interviews? No. But if we were McCain, we'd be all over that shit.

So, what are your predictions for tonight?

And more importantly, once it's over, let's go to town on what we think.

    Woohoo!!!!

I am hoping that she will look like an ass.
I am hoping he won't stick his foot in his mouth.
I hope he tells her to fuck off

However the bitch might not come off as stupid by all the coaching she's had. lack of interviews. she just might save face.

I've been getting ready for my vp debate party. it will be super.

Joe Biden has a very long history of debate and speech blunders. It's just who he is. But the bottom line is that he does know a thing or two, and has a lot of significant experience.

(Plus, he's just a very good guy. I lived in DE for years, and had great respect for him as my Senator. I even met him once, when I was a college student activist, and had a petition to present. Which has no bearing on debating skills, but I'm rooting for him!!)

Palin will have been prepped to within an inch of her life. Look for her to give strong delivery of prefab answers. I think if she can manage to stick with that, she'll present well. If, however, anyone (Biden or Gwen Ifil) manages to get her to engage actively, she'll fall to pieces, as the ignorant, ill-informed, ill-equipped, moose-hunting barbie doll that she is.

As an aside, McCain is pulling out of Michigan, as he's realized he can't turn the tide there, so he's going to focus on battleground states. Until the past week, he'd been exceedingly confident that he could win Michigan. Today, he's conceding it.

Ooops. Is that me grinning like a friggin' idiot? You bet it is!!

The NYT asked my hero to submit a question they'd pose to either Palin or Biden. Somehow, I doubt it'll get answered...

Senator Biden, you’ve been one of the Senate’s most ardent drug warriors. You helped create the office of “drug czar”; backed our failed eradication efforts in South America; encouraged the government to seize the assets of people merely suspected of drug crimes; pushed for the expanded use of racketeering and conspiracy laws against drug offenders; advocated the use of the military to fight the drug war; and sponsored a bill that holds venue owners and promoters criminally liable for drug use by people attending concerts and events.

Today, illicit drugs are as cheap and abundant as they were decades ago. Would you agree that the anti-drug policies you’ve championed have failed? If not, how have they succeeded?
Ahahahahah! Biden's a douche when it comes to the drug war.

Since the Canadian debate is tonight too (haha...total losers up there ) I found this! Keep it in mind when you watch the debate:

Dos and Don'ts of TV Debates

    THE EXPERTS:

Melanie Novis, author of Canadian Public Speaking and instructor of professional speech and communication coach at the University of Toronto.

Shannon Smith, founder of Premiere Image International, a Toronto-based corporate image consulting firm.

Arlene Bradley, Montreal-based business etiquette and protocol consultant.

    ATTIRE

"Don't wear all black or all white, it drains the colour out of your face."

    – Novis

"Suits and power ties for the men, a well-fitted suit for May as well. I would suggest that Layton lose the moustache – facial hair is a barrier to communication. May and Dion should also lose the glasses because they create a glare on television."

    – Smith

"Go conservative (small 'c'). You can't go wrong with simple. You want to look clean, cool and crisp. And no jewellery!"

    – Bradley

    POSTURE AND BODY LANGUAGE

"Crossing your arms can be seen as defensive, cutting off your audience. Imagine your arms are like empty coat sleeves hanging on the hanger, it helps you to relax."

    – Novis

"Hand gestures should always be above the waist. If they are below the waist it's a negative attitude. Don't flail your arms around. Keep your elbows in close, and your hands up. It shows energy and passion, but doesn't distract from the message."

    – Smith

"Shuffling on either foot or leaning over the microphone presents a negative image, like you're not in control."

    – Bradley

    ETIQUETTE

"Don't point. People don't like to be pointed at, it's too authoritative. Instead, extend your hand and turn the palm upwards."

    – Novis

    "Have some grace. Don't interrupt."

    – Smith

"If you interrupt, it shows you as being an impatient person. It doesn't do you much good."

Optimus can back me up here, but I totally agree with you. Coming from someone who doesn't even smoke pot and never has, I think it should be legalized. For me, it's the same as alcohol. Actually, I think it's less harmful than alcohol.

In our neighborhood, and we live in a very nice neighborhood, there is a medical marijuana facility. We didn't even know this. But yesterday, an unarmed security guard was shot and killed during an attempted robbery. For weed!! For a fucking plant that grows in the ground. Now there's the real injustice. Optimus was on the shitter when he heard the gunshots. That's not something we're familiar with in our area, so it freaked him out just a little.

    Was that TMI, Opt? Sorry.

A debate would be so boring if they followed these rules. Then again, debates are supposed to be boring.

Really? It always weirds me out to meet young people who have never smoked. I may as well shake hands with a fuckin' unicorn.

Well, if you knew my upbringing you'd understand why.

I have cousins who all became MAJOR pot heads. I don't mean smoke for recreation sometimes, but could not function without getting high several times a day.

So, while I watched them literally waste their lives (in the same vein an alcoholic would), I stayed away from the stuff and got my shit together, graduated college, got a good job, didn't have several babies by men I didn't know, etc.

And since I've never smoked a cigarette and they gross me out, I kinda linked them together. I hate hookah too.

Ah, a genetic predisposition to addiction, sounds like. Sharp gal. I don't have any addicts in my family, except for a few alcoholics, but I think every family has a few of those.

A lady does not speak that way.

but seriously, big things happen when i'm in my office. I experienced my first earthquake while making a deposit, and i heard a shooting yesterday while dropping friends off at the pool. If aliens ever land in my apartment and say "take me to your leader" they'll have to wait till i'm out of the can.

i don't want pot legalized because i don't want to have to smell it everywhere that i go. For at least 5-10 years after everyone will be smoking in the streets like its 420 24 hours a day. Cities already smells bad. I don't want it smelling like someone's butt all day long.

My America does not want to smell like a Phish concert!!!!!!!!!

Whatever happened to McCain's promise to run a clean campaign and change the face of politics?

ST. LOUIS — Sarah Palin plans to go on the attack in tonight’s debate, hitting Joe Biden for what she will call his foreign policy blunders and penchant for adopting liberal positions on taxes and other issues, according to campaign officials involved in prepping her for tonight’s showdown.

The Palin camp is projecting surprising self-confidence in the pre-debate hours, despite the vice presidential nominee’s uneven — and, at some points, peculiar — performances in recent television interviews, the officials say. Top advisers to John McCain privately say Palin’s recent CBS interview was a borderline disaster, especially since it played out in several segments over several days. Tonight will be different, they say.

“This is going to finally put her back into a position where we see her like we saw her the first couple weeks,” a McCain official said. “She was herself. She was authentic, and people related to that. ... Tonight, she’ll get into a rhythm. You’re going to see her in a way that you haven’t seen her yet.”

By contrast, Biden plans what an aide calls "a just-the-facts, prosecutorial approach laying out the case against McCain and defending Obama." The aide said Biden will be "keeping the eye on the target, which is McCain."

I find it even more weird when I meet people who think pot smells bad. I mean, some pot does, I guess...Maybe I'm just spoiled living in Seattle.

My weed smokage is quite rare, as of late. It was a daily occurrence several years ago, but only past 9PM (I was an insomniac, but am NOT a functioning smoker, which is why I'd save it for bed time). Now it's social/once-in-a-blue-moon. I don't regret any of my drug use. I've never tried anything particularly "hard", nor would I do acid again, but the occasional mushroom-assisted camping experience is a beautiful thing. Especially when your attractive female neighbor strips down in front of the fire to change because she's convinced herself that you can't see her. Good times.

I certainly wish it was a little more dramatic but..

    1) Biden did a good job showing restraint and courtesy to Palin. There were times he could have schooled her harder (especially when she mispronounced the ground general's (in Afghanistan) name. McKiernan, not McLellan, as she said).

    2) Biden got choked up when talking about being a single parent after the death of his wife, countering her "being a mom" experience. Thanks, Biden, for making me cry, too. But good move, as well. I think a lot of people felt his pain in the moment.

    3) Sarah Palin did a little answer dodging, her favorite game, but she did an overall better job than I expected. But when asked what her Achilles heel is, she did not answer. She just deferred back to her energy experience in Alaska. Biden, on the other hand, answered that the moderator was being polite assuming he only had one. I was watching CNN and they had a tracker showing approval among independents in Ohio, and his positives went through the roof at that answer. Hers went way down. Just a side note, there were many times when his tracker results went through the roof.

Another interesting thing for peeps who didn't watch the debate on CNN. Afterward they talked to those same independents in Ohio, and several people admitted they decided to vote for Obama after this debate. Also, the reporter asked who thought Obama was going to win. Even the people who had just admitted to being McCain supporters raised their hands. haha!

Anywho, overall, it was a good debate, with Biden the clear winner. He schooled her ass on foreign policy issues. And I am glad he brought up the fact that he's been a champion of Israel for 20 years.

I really do wish Palin stop bringing that infant on stage though.

A lot of stupid americans don't know about his wife situation...so a lot were like wtf? hehe. you should get twitter, for the political stuff. it made me sad though, and it showed the bitch was being sexist.

She was too scripted for my taste, acting like a news anchor. her tone sounded sarcastic to a lot of people who twittered and here at my get together. She totally dodged too many questions for my taste.

I think it's funny she didn't mention her daughter in relating to people. you know about her special needs son, her military kid but what about the knocked up teen...she could have gotten mama drama votes. lol.

Maybe it's just me, but I watched both debates and in the presidential debate I couldn't help feeling that McCain looked like a feeble old man. Even worse his answers and attitude seemed more appropriate for the Eisenhower era and the cold war than the 21st century.

To me Palin appeared to be terrified anytime she had to veer away from party retoric or said something she didn't think the voters would believe. Her answers were generally sensless or meer parroting of the party line without examples or evidence.

On a positive note she did come off as a likeable hokey mom and didn't fall flat on her face. Would I want her running the country? I'm not sure I want her running Alaska.

Yeah, that's what I meant to say! It's been a long day.
I also commented during the debate on her pronunciation of "nuclear"! I'm glad someone else caught that too.

    Hmmm. Was it NEW-CLEAR?

The ultimate "Thats what she said" Quote of the night from Palin:

"John McCain has already tapped me and said, that's where I want you..."

Palin turns aggressive in faceoff with Biden

    Oct 03, 2008 04:30 AM

ST. LOUIS–Sarah Palin, facing unprecedented scrutiny as a U.S. vice-presidential candidate, returned to her folksy, populist roots in a nationally televised debate last night, making a pitch for the "Joe Six Packs and hockey moms'' across the nation.

After weeks of questions about whether she was up to the job, Palin struck an aggressive tone here during a 90-minute confrontation with Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden, tacking closer to the Sarah Barracuda image she had cultivated when she burst onto the national stage last month.

She called Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's plan to withdraw troops from Iraq "a white flag of surrender'' and brought most answers back to references to kids' soccer games, the middle class in which "(husband) Todd and I live'' and referred to "Main Streeters like me.''

She salted her answers with phrases like "darn right'' and "you betcha,'' as she parried with Biden, a 36-year veteran of the U.S. Senate and a man 21 years senior to the 44-year-old Alaska governor.

"I may not answer the questions the way you or the moderator like,'' she said to Biden, "but I'm going to talk straight to the American people.''

Palin's most challenging test on the national stage could not have come at a more critical time for Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

After two weeks during which an economic crisis has topped the U.S. news agenda, Obama is gaining strength not only nationally, but is easing into clear leads in a series of so-called battleground states that will decide the Nov. 4 race.

McCain yesterday pulled resources out of Michigan and shut down his advertising in the state once predicted to be hotly contested until the end.

Although Obama has done the same in some states like North Dakota and Alaska, they are much smaller than Michigan and its 17 electoral votes.

Palin's five weeks of fame has been a wild ride.

After taking the nation by storm after her acceptance speech in Minnesota last month, six in 10 respondents in a Washington Post/ABC News poll released yesterday say she is not sufficiently experienced to be president, a looming issue for someone on the ticket with a 72-year-old man.

After energizing the Republican evangelical base, Palin is now seen by voters across the country as a drag on the ticket, the poll found.

Most importantly, independent voters, evenly divided on the Alaska governor when she was introduced, now view her negatively by a margin of about two to one.

Two-thirds of respondents in this must-have voting pool for McCain say she lacks the experience to become president.

So, after intensive debate training during a week in which members of her own party watched a series of television interview she had given to CBS with dread, Palin went on the offensive as the two walked on stage last night.

"Nice to meet you,'' she said to Biden.

    "It's a pleasure,'' Biden replied.

"Hey, can I call you Joe?'' she said.

For his part, Biden consistently referred to her as Governor Palin, tried to keep the focus on McCain and showed respect for his opponent.

One of the few direct references Biden made to policies of Palin dealt with McCain's plan for taxing the health-care benefits workers receive from their employers.

"I call that the ultimate `Bridge to Nowhere,'" Biden said, a reference to the Alaska project, a symbol of government waste, that Palin had claimed to oppose – after initially backing it.

Palin, when dealing with the economic crisis facing this nation, said it was time for Americans to do what their parents taught them – stay out of debt.

Biden countered that those to whom she was giving that advice can't even buy gas.

Palin also agreed that greed and corruption on Wall Street was responsible for much of the problem and Americans had been duped.

"Let's commit ourselves (to) just every day American people, Joe Six Pack, hockey moms across the nation, I think we need to band together and say never again,'' Palin said.

"Never will we be exploited and taken advantage of again by those who are managing our money and loaning us these dollars.''

The dynamics heading into last night's debate made victory for Biden difficult, if not impossible, since all eyes were on Palin.

Right-wing radio and television launched an enormous offensive in the hours before either candidate took a question, pummelling the media for its treatment of Palin.

From now until my dying fucking breath, I am officially boycotting the word "Maverick". I've grown to HATE that word. How many times did she say it last night? 8? And mention "country first"? Oh, and she's just about played the "hockey mom" thing out. Guess what, Palin? THERE AREN'T THAT MANY HOCKEY MOM'S IN AMERICA. At least Biden didn't have to rely on gimmicks.

Mike and I were watching together, which was suprising, considering. Still, there were multiple times throughout where even Mike's uninterested ass gave out the standard frat boy "Ohhhhhhhhh!" in response to Biden slamming shit back at Palin. Frankly, I wish he'd have hit even harder when she brought up HER use of windfall taxes up in Alaska. What a ditz. She should have left that one alone. Of course, I tend to watch debates like they're football games, so I'm standing up at points last night, shaking fists and ranting at the TV in response to statements made, rooting Biden on like I've got money on the shit.

Anyway, after the debates were over, Mike and I are standing outside preparing the BBQ when we hear some random female pundit ranting about how Palin owned Biden. A confused look washes over Mike's face and he says, "Was...she...watching what we were watching?"

This morning's news was funny, though. The channel I watch put a poll up last night about who people thought won. Before they announced the results, they emphasized the fact that the poll was non-scientific. The results? Biden: 95%. Yep...I'm in an overwhelmingly liberal city. :p
"Now that ceaseless exposure has calloused us to the lewd and the vulgar, it is instructive to see what still seems wicked to us. What still slaps the clammy flab of our submissive consciousness hard enough to get our attention?"

Athena, my experience was almost exactly like yours. Except I cried when Biden got choked up (men crying always gets to me) and I clapped when he put her in her place time and time again. I am just so proud that he was able to do it without "gaffes" and his trademark Un-PC comments. He did a great job.

I live in a very liberal city too, so it's hard to gauge the rest of the country, but like I posted, I loved that he faired so well with CNN's Ohio focus group. She didn't bomb, but she didn't do that great. He basically just proved he's much more qualified. And likeable!

And Palin, I take offense at you referring to us as "joe 6 pack". What the fuck is that? Does she mean 6 pack of beer or like, 6 pack abs? Either way, you insult our intelligence with you "every man" rhetoric. We don't need another "every man" in office. We had that for 8 years, thank you!

Now, bring on Tuesday! I love town hall style. I wish I could be there asking questions!

The moment that sealed the deal for me was when Biden went off about how McCain is not a Maverick. Holy crap. HAHAHA

Anyway, checked MSNBC...looks like they thought Pallin did a great job. What debate were they watching? I heard a lot of double-speak and repetition that didn't add anything to the debate.

I am sure the pundits on Fox news have jizzed all over Palin today for her performance.

You're in my neck of the woods! NoHo in da house! It's too hot there for me.

I was just on Fox News and that's what they were doing. They were surprised she did so well. What? Really? I mean, she's kinda won over my mom since she's a hockey mom (damn straight best sport ever), but my parents have always been repubs. I decided to look at both sides and I was kinda 50/50 until I saw the debate last night. 70/30 now. :D

Woot. Yeah. I was so happy yesterday when it hit 93. I can't believe it actually cooled off! HAHA

This right here is why I hate her. She has no fucking clue about "the real americans" but she pretends to. Yeah, we should stay out of debt and take care of our own shit, but first how about we find out why a two income household had to start biking and walking everywhere because the economy is for shit and gas is out of price range for us.

I don't understand how smoking some pot makes one instantly into a loser (re: the poster who said they never smoked and instead got a degree, had children, a good job). My sis and I both have college degrees, both have 1 child and both have great jobs etc. etc.

All of those assumptions are just propraganda BS. Sure drugs can wreck lives, however it sure isn't a given.

I reside in Vermont right now and pot is everywhere here and seems almost everyone just accepts it. It's a very pot-friendly place.
