Fotini Huntley trys to drown her baby, calls 911

A Citrus Heights woman tried to drown her 2-year-old daughter late Saturday, leaving the infant in critical condition at a local hospital, police said Sunday.

Fotini Huntley, 36, of Crosswinds Circle, was booked into Sacramento County main jail early Sunday on attempted murder charges. She is being held without bail.

Huntley called 911 around 9:50 p.m. and told dispatchers that she had drowned her daughter, police said. When authorities arrived, Huntley was standing outside her apartment. Police detained her and went inside to check on the infant.

She was unconscious, so they immediately began performing CPR. It wasn't clear how long the baby had been unconscious, said Citrus Heights Police Lt. Gina Anderson.

The baby was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center.

The baby's father, Anthony Huntley, told The Bee that his wife has a long history of mental illness, though she has never tried anything like this before.

"She's schizophrenic," he said. "She's been on medication for that for a few years."

Anthony Huntley said he wasn't home when the alleged incident occurred. He only spoke to The Bee for a moment, saying he was exhausted from staying up all night.

Neighbors said Fotini Huntley often kept to herself. Angela Quimby said her 2-year-old niece would sometimes greet the Huntleys' daughter as the family came home. "He always did all the talking," Quimby said of Anthony Huntley. "(Fotini Huntley) just kept her head down."

Other than being quiet, Quimby and other neighbors said they never noticed anything different about Fotini Huntley. They said it was clear, though, that the baby was in loving hands.

"(Anthony) seems like a really good dad," Quimby said. "He would always hold her. The mom would just look down."

She looks like a corpse.

And the sooner she actually becomes one, the better. Ordinarily I'd have more compassion due to her condition. But not when she tries to murder an innocent baby.

I don't know if Dad has a choice to leave his daughter and wife alone. Who would be watching over things? He was probably at work trying to keep them off welfare.

Depending on the severity of the mental issue, it is okay. I know a person with the same condition who takes care of her children. There is something other than the mental illness going on, probably depression that sometimes comes with having a child.

Yep she sure does. Those are some serious dark circles under her eyes! Yikes!

Wow, poor baby girl. Even at such a tender age she knew mama was trying to hurt her...so terrible....the last images this baby had before closing her eyes.

God I hope she makes it and is never in her mother's care again.

You know, it may not be a bad idea for those with mental illness such as schizophrenia to have a extra set of eyes on them at all times. Like a case worker or a nurse or something. Maybe they should have to take classes before/after having a child so that they are better able to deal with the child and life issues that are related to having children.
Its so heartbreaking to hear that a poor innocent child lost their life due to their parents being nuts. What is a toddler going to do to provoke someone to kill them? They are little kids for Christs sake. Nothing they ever do will justify killing them (or even abusing them).

Bluck. I don't think "better" is quite the right word to describe anything having to do with her. Unless, of course, it was an ACTUAL picture of her deceased. Then I'd say, "There. That's better."

Well, it's a less distorted photo anyway. Which only serves to make her look more like a corpse. I attributed much of the look to the quality of the photo originally.
