OGDEN - The mother of an infant strangled by her boyfriend waived her right Wednesday to a preliminary hearing in 2nd District Court, as prosecutors amended charges against her to include five new counts of second-degree felony child abuse.
Camille Randles, 24, faces the possibility of one to 15 years in prison for each of the child abuse counts if convicted.
Judge W. Brent West entered a not guilty plea on Randles' behalf during Wednesday's hearing and ordered her to stand trial on the eight charges against her. Her next court date is an Oct. 15 scheduling hearing.
Randles was charged in May with second-degree felony child abuse, second-degree felony obstruction of justice and failing to report child abuse, a class B misdemeanor. (This is a misdemeanor??? You have to be joking!)
Her former boyfriend, Trevor Thomas Grover, was sentenced in April to 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering 3-month-old Aroura Lee Randles in 2006.
Grover told police he strangled the infant with a sock because he was jealous of the attention she received from her mother and could not make the child stop crying. He also admitted to cutting off the child's breathing until she passed out on two other occasions.
Randles has allegedly admitted she also abused her daughter, and stood by while Grover harmed the child.
Additional charges were filed Wednesday based on instances of abuse that Randles allegedly witnessed or participated in.
Defense attorney Roy Cole, who is representing Randles, has questioned whether the Weber County Attorney's Office should be able to use information against Randles that she provided them in the case against Grover.
On Wednesday, Cole said he and prosecutors are still evaluating the conflict of interest issue.
Nicholas Randles, who was serving at a U.S. Army base in Asia when Aroura Lee was killed, attended Wednesday's hearing in support of his wife, with whom he has reunited, according to another relative at the hearing.
