Attorney General Corbett announces Internet predator arrests in Montgomery County and Florida; 164 total arrests by Child Predator Unit


HARRISBURG - Attorney General Tom Corbett today announced that agents from the Attorney General's Child Predator Unit have arrested a Montgomery County man accused of using the Internet to sexually proposition a 12-year old girl, as well as attempting to develop a physical relationship with the girl. Additionally, Corbett said a Florida man has been arrested on charges that he repeatedly sent sexually explicit photos and webcam videos to what he believed was a 13-year old girl from the Pittsburgh area.

Corbett identified the defendants as Bradley Scott Shermer, 38, 2015 Old Skippack Drive, Woxall, and Derek Thibodeau, 35, Titusville, Florida.

Corbett said that Shermer is accused of using Internet chat services and instant messages to sexually proposition a 12-year old girl, telling her, "my hands are seriously gonna be all over you babe," and "gimme about 5 minutes. by then I will have u kissing like the best. tongue and all." The girl's parents discovered text of online conversations Shermer was allegedly having with their daughter and contacted the Attorney General's Child Predator Unit, which immediately launched an investigation.

"This is the second time this month that a predator suspect has been arrested because teens and parents came forward with information about inappropriate contact," Corbett said. "It is vital for parents to regularly discuss the dangers of online predators with their kids and stress that they should always report any online activity that makes them feel uncomfortable."

Corbett noted that parents, children or other concerned individuals can report suspected Internet predators to the Attorney General's Child Predator Unit by using the "report a predator" link, located on the front page of the Attorney General's website, or by calling the toll-free Child Predator Hotline, at 1-800-385-1044.

Corbett said that Shermer, a heating and air conditioning technician, allegedly communicated with the girl using the instant message screen name, "bradshermer." Messages were allegedly sent to the girl from his home computers and his mobile phone.

According to the criminal complaint, instant message transcripts discussed a late-august meeting that allegedly involved Shermer kissing the girl, along with a detailed discussion about his intentions to "teach" her about other activities.

Corbett said that agents executed a search warrant at Shermer's home on September 16th, with the assistance of Pennsylvania State Police from the Skippack Barracks, seizing four computers and various data storage devices. During that search, agents discovered a hidden video camera installed in the bedroom of a 13-year old girl. Items seized during the search are being analyzed by the Attorney General's Computer Forensics Unit as part of an ongoing investigation.

Shermer is charged with one count of unlawful contact with a minor and one count of criminal use of a computer, both third-degree felonies which are each punishable by up to seven years in prison and $15,000 fines.

Additionally, Shermer is charged with one count of invasion of privacy, a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Shermer was preliminarily arraigned on September 17th before Red Hill Magisterial District Judge Catherine Hummel Fried and lodged in the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $150,000 cash bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 23, at 11:45 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Fried.

The case will be prosecuted in Montgomery County by Deputy Attorney General Michael A. Sprow of the Attorney General's Child Predator Unit.

Corbett thanked the Pennsylvania State Police for their cooperation and assistance in this investigation.
