Newlywed Kirk Cook caps mother-in-law

WARREN -- Police this morning identified the man who shot his mother-in-law and barricaded himself in his home Monday for six hours as Kirk Cook, 48.

Cook shot his mother-in-law, Karen Gross, 41, also of Warren, in the head Monday after an argument in the driveway of Cook's home, according to William Dwyer, the city's Police Commissioner. Cook lived on Berkshire Avenue off of Ryan near 8 Mile.

Dwyer said Cook had been married for only four days. Gross had come to their home to pick up her 20-year-old daughter because the couple had been arguing.

At about 8 p.m. Monday, Cook came out of his house and unleashed his dog, a pit bull, officials said

A police officer fired a non-lethal round at the gunman as the suspect walked back to his home, striking him in the chest with no effect, according to Dwyer.

The suspect retrieved a handgun from his pants pocket and fired upon police. Two officers were hit by ricocheting bullets and suffered superficial wounds, officials said. The officers were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released.

Police returned fire, striking the gunman numerous times and killing him, Dwyer said.

WARREN -- They were newlyweds, but by all accounts the marriage got off to a troubled start and only worsened.

The uneasy union ended Monday when the groom fatally shot his mother-in-law in the driveway of his home in the 3700 block of Berkshire. Then, after a five-hour standoff with police, the distressed man charged out of his side door and fired his 9 mm handgun into the crowd of officers, hitting two of them in their legs. Police fired back, killing him.

The tragedy began Monday afternoon, when 48-year-old Kirk Cook called his mother-in-law and told her to pick up his wife because they'd had an argument, Warren Police Commissioner William Dywer said.

"When the mother-in-law showed up, he met her in the driveway and shot her twice in the head," Dwyer said.

Police did not release the mother-in-law's name Monday.

Cook's mother, Caroline Cook of Waterford Township, said there were problems with her son's marriage to the 21-year-old woman he'd met in an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting a few months ago, and that her son had been under a lot of stress lately. The couple eloped less than two weeks ago, she said.

"He was trying to save her," she said. "There was trouble from the beginning. A few weeks ago, we had a long talk; I tried to talk him out of marrying her, because he'd just met her. He promised he'd wait, but that was a lie because the next thing you know they came back from Up North and he said they were married. This was only a week and a half ago, and he's been really stressed out since then."

Caroline Cook said she wasn't aware of any animosity between her son and his mother-in-law.

"I don't know anything about her side of the family; I don't even know anything about her, other than that he met her in the AA meetings," she said.
