Zodiac Killer's Identity Uncovered?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The Zodiac Killer attacked at least eight people, terrorizing the Bay Area and taunting police in the 60's and 70's. Thursday, the FBI confirmed to CBS13 they are now running laboratory tests on some items that may link a suspect to the killer.

I have read a couple of books on the Zodiac. Evil man. Hope they can identify the killer.

I agree, I have followed this since I was say 12 years old. It intrigued me. The most compelling for me is the DNA. In the 60's and 70's DNA wasn't possible. LE still has all the letters sent to the newspaper and they have the DNA from the the stamps licked and it has been reported that they do in fact have a DNA sample. It could be a hoax, still it has me excited.

I remember reading a while back about this guys beliefs and there was a huge drawn out drama on some boards trying to disprove and a lot of forum drama behind it. i am glad that the authorities are finally taking interest and proving one way or another hopefully if this man was or was not the Zodiac.

I think I remember reading that too. Everyone has there own ideas about who he was or possibly still is. I just want to know. That hood he found was really compelling. SCARY too.

Roll Of Film Could Hold Answers In Zodiac Case Reporting

The picture is graphic; A dead, bloody body. Dennis Kaufman says the picture came from a roll of film he found in his stepfather's belongings after he died.

Dennis Kaufman agreed to show CBS13 several photographs.

The pictures are difficult to look at, but Kaufman says if just one family finds answers about a loved one who was murdered, the last 9 years he's dedicated to this case will be worth it.

Last year, Dennis Kaufman began supplying the FBI with evidence attempting to prove his stepfather, Jack Tarrance, is the zodiac killer.

The evidence included envelopes for DNA testing and a hood resembling one worn by the zodiac in 1969 during an attack.

The FBI also took rolls of film but Kaufman did not hand over all the film. "When you give something to the FBI you never know what they are going to show or reveal to you," explained Kaufman.

Kaufman says the picture of the tattooed man was on a single roll of film he developed prior to giving evidence the FBI.

He gave three rolls to the FBI and the remaining 16 rolls he turned over to Stephen Dewhurst, a professor at Northern Arizona University.

"These are colloquially called snuff films. They are films documenting the death of someone," explains Dewhurst.

Dewhurst began working with Kaufman two years ago after reading his website www.therealzodiackiller.com

Dewhurst himself has been long fascinated by the zodiac case, believing a family friend could be one of the serial killer's victims.

"She was stabbed 31 times and sexually assaulted," says Dewhurst.

Gladys Gresham was killed in Vallejo in 1971. Her case was never connected to the zodiac.

The psychotic killer is known to have attacked seven people, but in taunting letters the zodiac claimed 37 victims.

Of the 16 rolls he developed, Dewhurst believes one reveals disturbing images of murder.

Dewhurst says the pictures are graphic, but the film is deteriorated and many images appear to be a haze of colors.

The first picture on the roll is the clearest. A stained baseball cap near what could be blood spatter.

The rest of the images are blurry, but Dewhurst believes they show two people being murdered.

"There are two victims apparently on the film. Both of whom are minors. There are pictures of them before and after their deaths," says Dewhurst.

In one photo Dewhurst believes he see the face of a young woman who disappeared from San Francisco in the 1970's.

"The pictures are open to interpretation. With how cloudy they are, why do you think she was tortured? What kind of mutilation do you see?" asked cbs13 reporter Kris Pickel.

Dewhurst responds, "She was cut up. She was decapitated. Body parts were cut off."

In one hazy photo, Dewhurst believes he see a woman's naked, decapitated body from the stump of her neck to her mid torso.

He says he is able to see that her right breast has been removed and a knife is being held above her left breast.

"The film proves in my mind Jack Tarrance was a serial killer," says Dewhurst.

He adds, "This is a monster in human form that went out and did horrible things to people for pleasure."

In another photo you can see the image of a boy.

Dewhurst says other pictures show the child's murder.

"The little boy was strangled," says Dewhurst.

Even the clearest image leaves a haze of questions.

Is the tattooed body with a peace sign the victim of an unsolved murder?

Do the ghostly images show the murders of a girl and boy or are they just hazy images?

Perhaps the biggest question: if Jack Tarrance took the pictures could he be a previously unknown serial killer or one of the most infamous in history.

Dennis Kaufman believes the evidence is overwhelming. "I know my stepfather is the zodiac. There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever," says Kaufman.

The FBI told Kaufman the three rolls he gave them had nothing but family pictures on them.

They currently have the photos developed by Dewhurst and may be able to make the images shaper.

A woman who claims her father is San Francisco’s infamous Zodiac Killer will be interviewed by police for the first time next week.

Southern California resident Deborah Perez, who claims her late father Guy Hendrickson is the man who terrorized the Bay Area in the late 60s and early 70s, says she will meet with Homicide Unit Lt. Michael Stasko on June 17.

Perez said that as a 7-year-old, she accompanied her father to two killings – one in Vallejo and one in San Francisco.

Perez, who’s now taking part in a documentary about the crime spree, said she wrote some of the killer’s letters – including a 1969 missive to attorney Melvin Belli. Her father died in 1983 and went through periods of mental illness, she said.

The glasses worn by slain San Francisco cab driver Paul Stine, which her father took from the crime scene, are still in her possession, Perez said. She hopes forensic testing will prove her claims.

Sgt. Lyn Tomioka, spokeswoman for the Police Department, said she couldn’t confirm the meeting but said investigators are anxious to talk to Perez.

“We certainly would like to talk to her and discuss more fully some of the statements she made at the press conference,” Tomioka said.

Why would this woman hold a press confrence before talking to police. I have to say that with the glasses her story sound fesable however if you witnessed killings as a 7 year old it is hard to believe that you would keep it secret after all these years. Even if it was fear that kept her quiet he died in 1993. over 10 years ago. this is an interesting case and one i have read about. WIll be interesting to find out the truth

He has a very detailed and convincing case that his stepfather,Jack Torrence was the zodiac killer. He matches handwriting samples, shows a car jack used to own that matched one described to have been driven by the zodiac, uses convincing timelines and seems to demonstrate that without a doubt, the zodiac was Jack. I myself was very convinced that he was right after studying his case at above link. I spent hours and hours following every clue I could find on line. He was heavily involved in forum discussion and even ran another website to bolster his claim. He turned over DNA to the FBI who followed up on it. Everyone was on pins and needles waiting for the result. Turned out to be inconclusive. I believe this was around 2005. Since then he has lost his fanbase and is widely believed to be an attention whore with a clever angle and an almost bulletproof presentation.
He then came up with the zodiac hood and a bloody knife hidden in a speaker in the basement. The FBI has investigated and is politely ignoring him which speaks volumes.
If you are interested in this, first read his case for Jack Torrence and then Google his name for links to the forums, where you get the online sleuthing community unraveling him. Draw your own conclusion.

My doubt turned when he was exposed in an earlier crime case having to do with a bloody shirt he said belonged to another killer.

Former CHP Officer Says Zodiac Killer Is Alive, Living In Solano County

According to Lyndon Lafferty, who penned a new book titled The Zodiac Killer Cover Up, the killer is still alive and living Solano County.

“No doubt in my mind at all. I would say that I am 95 positive we have the right man,” said Laferty, who claims the 92-year-old lives in Fairfield. “I know for a fact that he does.”
Lafferty said a the suspect was never arrested because of a cover up by District Attorneys, Sheriff’s Department officials and one particular judge.

“The judge (was) having adulterous affairs with the suspects wife,” Lafferty claimed.



Lafferty, 79, does not name the suspect or the judge in his 440 page book. The former CHP officer was on patrol for 16 years. In November 1970, he claims he came face to face with the killer in the parking lost of the Hunter Hill rest stop off of I-80 in Vallejo.

“(It was) like I was looking into the eyes of death,” said Lafferty, who claimed that no law enforcement agency would take him seriously. “Their attitude is, unless the suspect is their own, they don’t want to talk to you,” Lafferty said.

For decades, Lafferty and six other former cops and investigators tracked the Zodiac Killings suspect through Solano County, watching him marry and even attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

“I’ve gone through 40 years of frustration,” said Lafferty.

Lafferty said he won’t release the name of the suspect because he doesn’t want to put a target on the back of a 92-year-old.
