BRADENTON -- A boy who threw his grandfather's broken radio away got a lashing in return, and then the grandfather ended up getting arrested, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.

Donald L. Egert, 51, of the 3200 block of 36th Avenue West, was arrested Thursday evening on a charge of child abuse after authorities said he repeatedly beat his grandson that afternoon.

Egert is accused of grabbing the boy by his neck and pulling him to the ground, according to a report.

The boy's brother pulled their grandfather off him, but Egert followed the boy into his room and slammed his head against the wall and into a window air conditioning unit, according to a report. His brother again pulled the man off the boy.

The boys went outside, followed by their grandfather. Egert threw the boy's birthday cake at him and walked into the home and locked the door, according to a report.

Egert told deputies he was angry because the boy should not have thrown the radio in the trash. Egert also gave several versions of what happened and said he had been drinking, according to a report.
