FARGO - Police here placed an 8-month-old baby in protective custody after the child’s 16-year-old mother and grandmother showed up intoxicated with the baby at the YWCA emergency shelter, Lt. Pat Claus said.

Police arrested the baby’s grandmother, Kari Ann May, 40, no permanent address, on suspicion of child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The baby’s mother was referred to juvenile authorities on suspicion of child neglect.

The incident was reported at 10:34 p.m. Tuesday at the shelter, 3000 S. University Drive.

The girl and her mother had apparently been drinking in the downtown area earlier in the day, Claus said.

Police released the baby to Cass County Social Service’s Child Protection Division.
