Unhappy Police Find Bodies of Missing R.I. Couple in Septic Tank

WARREN, R.I. — Police found the bodies of a missing Rhode Island couple Saturday in the septic tank in their yard.
James A. Soares Sr., 60 and Marian F. Soares, 53, were last been seen at the beginning of the month. They were reported missing by family members July 15 after they missed a family reunion.
Police went to the couple's house in Warren and excavated the yard with a backhoe.
They removed two body bags with their remains, along with several bags of dirt. Police declined to comment on the condition of the bodies.
Rhode Island state police told MyFOXProvidence.com they’ve taken a family member into custody, but no formal charges have been filed.
No further information was immediately available.

    A bit more available...

After a couple was missing for several weeks, police discovered two bodies -- believed to be them -- in the cesspool in their backyard. Family friends have their suspicions -- they say Marian and James Soares had a rocky relationship with their son.

Dave and Tracey Rasmussen used to live a couple doors down from the Soareses. They say Marian did not get along with her son, James Jr., who's now 24.

"[James Jr.] and his mom didn't have the best of relationships. They argued. She was afraid of him... and would come over my house," says Tracey. "She'd just hang there till Jim [Senior] got home from work, so she'd be safe."

Other neighbors agree: "They had a lot of problems there, and the police... had a lot of problems with their son," said Kenny Barber.

Marian Soares also had a restraining order against James Jr.'s girlfriend -- after accusing both her and James Jr. of stealing.

Steven Viau and Patricia Frenche, Marian's niece and nephew, said Marian had left behind more than 27 medications she had to take for health issues -- which the Rasmussens say included cancer.

At a news conference, Major Steven O'Donnell of the State Police said he did not know where the Soares's son was.
    http://www.eyewitnessnewstv.com/Glob...41643&nav=F2DO
Mario Morais, who lives up the street at 6 Baltimore Ave., said that there were “six or seven people living there” and he often saw three or four cars in the driveway. The family often held barbecues in their backyard with large groups of people, he said.

The Soares and their home have been in the news before. In 2002, police seized 12 long rifles, three handguns and about 30,000 rounds of ammunition from the Soares’ home. The elder James Soares pleaded guilty to a federal charge of unlawfully possessing firearms as a convicted felon. He was placed on home confinement for one year and probation for five years.

In 1986, James and Marian Soares were arrested on drug-possession charges after the police raided their house and found cocaine, prescription tranquilizers, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a .357 Magnum and $1,350 in cash. James Soares pleaded no contest to felony charges and served a three-year suspended sentence and five years’ probation.

Cesspool? Like the city sewage lagoon only for your house? You can toss a body into one? Yech!

Any which way, it is a disgusting place to end up. Someone should have jumped in themself BEFORE they did this deed.

Less than 36 hours after their remains were discovered, James Soares Jr., 24, was arraigned Sunday afternoon on charges that he murdered his parents, James Soares, 60, and Marian Soares, 53, with a garden tool and dumped their bodies into a cesspool behind their modest ranch house.

Warren and state police believe that Mr. Soares, who had a rocky relationship with his parents and has had several run-ins with the law, used a grub hoea long-handled garden tool with a rake on one side and a sledgehammer-type head on the other — to bludgeon his parents to death inside their home on Wednesday, July 9.

Police believe that after killing his parents, he moved their bodies into the back yard, where he lifted a lid off an underground cesspool and dropped them in.

Reports are that several weeks ago, Mrs. Soares filed a restraining order against her son's girlfriend, but police would not comment on that restraining order Sunday.

With reading the background on the parents and son, at some point in time I'd like to hear if there is a "Why" in all of this.
It isn't the typical psycho child turning on the parents. The parents have a past as well....

....and no, it doesn't justify being killed. Just want to know if there is a "why" in all of this.

I can't image they would. Given the length of time in there, the body is probably not in too good a shape.

"Even after police discovered the bodies, they couldn't be sure they'd found the missing couple, as their condition required identification through dental records or, possibly, fingerprints."

James Soares bludgeoned his parents with a hoe then goes a shopping spree

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A 24-year-old man is accused of bludgeoning his parents to death, stashing their bodies in the backyard cesspool and using their credit cards for a big-ticket spending spree, authorities said Friday.

James A. Soares Jr. faces 68 counts of murder, computer fraud, obtaining money under false pretenses and fraudulent use of a credit card. He pleaded not guilty Friday at an arraignment.

Investigators allege Soares bludgeoned James and Marian Soares with a hoe, then dragged their bodies to the in-ground cesspool behind their home in Warren, a small town about 13 miles southeast of Providence.

The couple was reported missing July 15 after they failed to attend a family reunion. State police dug up their remains with a backhoe nearly two weeks later.

The son's lawyer, John Lovoy, did not return a call seeking comment. Soares remains held at the state prison in Cranston without bail, where he has been since his arrest in July.

James Soares' 20-year-old girlfriend, Nicole Pacheco, is charged with participating in the shopping spree that included a television, computer and other electronics. A judge entered a not guilty plea on her behalf Friday at her arraignment, where she was not represented by a lawyer.

Pacheco was ordered held on $100,000 surety bail.

Pacheco is not alleged to have any role in the killings, and Attorney General Patrick Lynch said there was no evidence she knew what had happened to the couple.

Lynch did not reveal a motive for the killings.

The two allegedly spent thousands of dollars on home merchandise, including a television, laptop computer and other electronic equipment.

BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) - A Bristol resident who is the girlfriend of an accused killer will serve one year at the ACI in Cranston.

Nicole Pacheco was sentenced to one year for violating her probation.

She has been at the ACI since January after she was indicted on credit card charges.

Police say Pacheco and her boyfriend, James Soares, used his parents cards to go on several spending sprees.

Soares is accused of killing his mother and father and then putting their bodies in a cesspool in the victims backyard home in Warren last summer.

Officers say after that crime is when Pacheco and Soares used the credit cards.

Pacheco violated her probation for earlier crimes, including marijuana possession, vandalism and taking her mother's car without permission.

R.I. man says he killed parents, put bodies in cesspool
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Rhode Island man has pleaded guilty to bludgeoning his parents and putting the bodies in their backyard cesspool.
The plea Tuesday from James Soares (SORZ) Jr. came as jury selection was scheduled to begin in his murder trial in Providence.

Soares was charged with the murders on July 27, 2008, one day after the bodies of his parents were removed from the in-ground cesspool of their home in Warren. They had been reported missing two weeks earlier after failing to show up for a family get-together.

Prosecutors say Soares and his girlfriend used the couple's credit cards to go on a shopping spree.
    He faces consecutive life sentences.

Son gets life for killing parents

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Warren man charged with murdering his parents and dumping their bodies in a cesspool was sentenced Wednesday to two consecutive life sentences.

James Soares, Jr. was sentenced Providence Superior Court for the July 2008 murders. He received the maximum possible punishment under the terms of his plea agreement - which he reached with prosecutors in April.

Before the sentencing, family members of the victims were allowed to give victim impact stories.

Soares admitted to killing his parents , James and Marian Soares, at their Warren home in July of 2008, stashing the bodies in their backyard cesspool and then going on a shopping spree with the couple's credit cards.

I don't even know where my septic tank is. I suspect it's where there's a patch of really green thick grass. To open it and throw bodies in it, I don't know how that's possible.

I'm no expert, but I have some knowledge regarding septic tanks.

Odds are the patch of really green thick grass is where your septic tank's "leech field" is. Basically, some of the waste comes out there, and does obviously fertilize the ground. That is generally very close to the tank, with the center being near an edge of the tank.

Opening it is also possible, as having a septic tank drained is a fairly common task when you have one. My family sold our home before the septic tank required being emptied manually, so I couldn't speak as to how this is accomplished exactly.

11 years and have never had it emptied. Neither have the neighbors I've spoken to. Don't know if being on one of the highest hills have anything to do with it. But they don't know where theirs are either.

Thanks for helping me locate it though.

Yeah, I recall hearing that, if you treat it properly (for example, not flushing towels, etc), then it shouldn't require much servicing.

Do you put a treatment into your waste water every so often to help it break down the biological material? I believe my parents did, but I can't say I paid a whole lot of attention, back then.

I use Rid X after heavy rains and snow melting.

How though do you throw someone in? Even if I knew where it was, I'd have to dig through the grass and who knows how many inches or feet of dirt. Then, once I hit it, it could open enough to fit people through an opening?

I don't know. My house was built in 1920, maybe the tanks are different these days.

Getting a person in a septic tank, I have no idea unless they had some sort of above-ground one. Draining it, I believe, involves getting access to the top and some sort of hatch, but I can't imagine it would be big enough for a person to fit in, and certainly isn't easily accessed.

In some places a septic tank is an actual tank as opposed to just a large hole in the ground with a concrete cover. I've had houses with both. The tank has a cover or lid above the ground that can be taken off when it needs to be pumped out. the tank is still buried in the ground, I would be guessing that the difference would be whether you live in the city or the county. The one at my house now is just a large fortified hole with a concrete cover with the appropriate pipes going in and pipes going out for the leech field.

Generally. a septic tank has a lid that you cover with dirt and forget about it until it has to be pumped out. Solids build up. the liquid overflows to the drain field . The hatch is big enough for someone to get in there if they HAVE to.
This is before backfilling w/dirt. This one also has risers that come to the top. but generally they all have inspection hatches big enough to get in.

Rockin' you may want to consider pumping it out. The solids do not leave the tank. once it gets full, it carries over solids to your leech field and will plug all the pipes there.
It turns a 200 dollar pump out into a 5000 leech field repair. Call your septic guy he will explain it to you.

But you can tell when it's getting full; it starts backing up into the toilet. I have a submerged tank (it looks like a submarine when it's uncovered). It has a lid on it that's about a foot in diameter. You would need to cut the bodies into pieces to get them down the hole.

We haven't had ours pumped since we moved in - 15 years ago. And we don't have any green spots over our leech field. But we also live in the desert.

A packet of yeast dumped into a toilet once a month helps with that.
