Murder Suspect Planned More Killings
Police say 21-year-old Corey Gaustad had a plan that involved killing not just a 17-year-old girl who refused to date him, but her mother, grandmother, father and co-workers.
Gaustad faces second-degree murder and attempted murder charges in the death of Christine Nguyen, and the attempt to kill her daughter during an ambush outside their apartment.
The girl told police that she met Gaustad four years ago at a local church. She said that a few months ago she told Gaustad she no longer wanted to date him because he was showing violent tendencies.
On Thursday, Gaustad followed his ex-girlfriend and Nguyen, believing they were headed to an apparel store in a local mall where the girl had worked. Gaustad said if they had gone into the store, his plan was to "kill the girl, her co-workers, and any customers."
When they did not go to the mall, Gaustad went to their house and waited for them armed with two pistols and seven fully loaded magazines of ammunition.
When Gaustad, dressed in black, approached Nguyen and her daughter at their home, he yelled at the girl "Why did you break up with me."
Nguyen stepped out of her vehicle and said, "Don't do this".
Gaustad shot her once in the abdomen, he told police, "because he had learned it is a more painful way to die".
He then chased the girl and fired four shots, missing each time.
Gaustad told police he would have killed the girl's father had he been home. Unable to kill the girl, he left, hoping to shoot several others, including her grandmother and a friend. He even drove to St. Paul where the girl's friend lives but had second thoughts.
When police arrested Gaustad , they found a note with initials belonging to the girl, her mother, friend and grandmother. Underneath the initials for Nguyen, the word "success" had been written. "Failed" was written underneath the other three.
John Ellickson, New Brighton deputy director of public safety, called Nguyen a hero for confronting Gaustad and preventing her daughter from getting hurt.
"She knew that he had a gun, and she stepped out of the car and placed herself between him and the daughter," he said.

Gaustad is a true whack job. Christine Nguyen is a true mother.
