SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman believed to be in her 80s was found locked in a blazing hot van in a Seminole County parking lot Thursday afternoon. Fire officials said the woman was rushed to South Seminole Hospital in stable condition suffering from heat exhaustion.
The van, similar to those used by rental car companies to transport passengers around airports, was parked near an industrial area on Financial Court near the Meals on Wheels offices (see map). It belonged to Meals on Wheels, a service that provides meals and rides to seniors and others who need transportation to and from the Meals on Wheels center.
Rescuers said they believe the woman had been inside for as many as two or three hours. Temperatures in the Sanford area, near where the woman was found, reached 94 degrees Thursday, the hottest day of the summer so far. The temperature in the van likely reached 140 degrees, according to meteorologists.
Seminole County sheriff's investigators were on the scene, examining the van and talking to Meals on Wheels personnel. They're calling the incident a "mistake."
The woman's identity was not immediately released.
