Unhappy Andrew W. Culpepper killed his 2-year-old

At least he is quoted as saying it's his fault his son is dead. Details still to emerge, but it sounds like another child left to bake in the noonday sun. A damned shame. I ask again: How*do*you*FORGET*your*child*in*a*car??? I really want to understand this. Damn.

The 2-year-old boy who died Thursday in Portsmouth has been identified by a grandparent.

The boy is Andrew Stephen Culpepper, said his grandfather, Kenneth Culpepper of Suffolk. The boy had just turned 2 years old, and lived with his parents, Andrew W. Culpepper and Lonnie Rene Hecker, on Tyler Crescent East in Portsmouth.

Police said the boy had been found unresponsive in a car on Tyler Crescent East, in the Glensheallah neighborhood near the Willett Hall auditorium. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Saturday evening, police continue not to release circumstances of the child's death, nor would they confirm his identify. Police spokeswoman Ann Hope said she does not expect more information to be forthcoming from police until Monday.

Neighbors described a chaotic scene when police responded, around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Neighbor Jeffrey Crews-Aston said: "The father kept saying it was his fault, over and over."

A green SUV sat by the home, its back door open, a child seat sitting on the lawn.

According to an obituary submitted Saturday to The Virginian-Pilot, Culpepper's funeral is set for Tuesday at Meadowbrook Memorial Mausoleum. Visitation will be Monday at Sturtevant Funeral Home in Portsmouth.

... probably too much in a hurry to get a fix or something, maybe figured the 2 yr old could get out of his seat himself? *sigh* dumb dumb dumb... 99.9% of the world is dumb.

    Update: No charges

A father's tragic mistake was negligent but not criminal and so he won't be charged in the July overheating death of his 2-year-old son he forgot in a parked SUV in front of their house, the city's prosecutor has decided.

In some cases, the loss of your child is punishment enough. Sounds like the prosecutors have determined/decided the father simply forgot...still a damn shame.

I've talked about this with my own kids several times...I have forgotten them in the car countless times. I never LEFT them in the car but I can't begin to count the times I was cruising down the highway to work and then realize CRAP! one of them is still with me. Many a late day to work or whatever.
