LaVergne, Tenn. - A Rutherford County man was arrested after being accused of trying to kill his estranged wife and her family by burning their home down overnight.
Police said Samuel A. Jenkins, 34, of Lascassas, Tenn., set the back and front of a home on fire at Finegan Court in LaVergne around midnight.
His estranged wife, her parents, a 5-year-old child and a 3-day-old baby were inside but were able to escape safely.
The wife's father jumped from a second-story balcony and was able to rescue the other four people using a ladder.
Police said Jenkins was also outside the home and started shooting at the family members. Despite the fire and shooting, everyone in the family escaped injury.
Jenkins was later arrested at a Kmart store in Smyrna with burns on his legs.
Two firefighters were also slightly injured while battling the blaze but were expected to be OK.
Jenkins is facing five counts of attempted first-degree murder, arson and a violation of an order of protection.
