LAVERGNE, Tenn.- Police said a 12 year old girl was shot in the head at a home in LaVergne, and an 11 year old is facing aggravated assault charges.
Rutherford County Emergency officials responded to a home on Mabel Drive in the Lakeforrest subdivision after they got a phone call that a child was shot.
Police said an 11 year old boy went into his parents' bedroom and got out their gun. A 12 year old girl then entered the bedroom. Police said the gun discharged and girl was shot in the head. There were two 11 year olds, the 12 year old who was shot, and a 16 year old. There were no adults present at the time of the shooting.
Investigators removed evidence from the house. Initially, the sheriff in Rutherford County said they had not determined if the shooting was an accident or intentional. The 11 year old who shot the weapon was being held for questioning at the LaVergne police station. He is now facing aggravated assault charges. He will spend the night in a juvenile facility.
The 12 year old victim is in critical condition at Vanderbilt Hospital.
