Shayna Hubers Shot her Boyfriend Ryan Poston Multiple Times; Claims Self-Defense

A Kentucky woman accused of murdering her boyfriend over the weekend claims she acted in self defense -- and her lawyer says her only crime is dating the the wrong man.

Shayna Hubers, 21, allegedly shot 29-year-old Ryan Poston multiple times at his apartment in Highland Heights, Ohio, WKYT reports.

Police say she called 911 at about 9 p.m. on Friday to report that she had shot the man 15 minutes earlier and that he had stopped breathing.

Hubers' lawyer has asserted that his client acted in self-defense. "The only thing she did wrong was having bad taste in men," he said, according to WKRC.

The lawyer's statement has been met with backlash from Poston's family.

"Please keep in mind that the real victim in this tragedy is Ryan Poston," the family released in a statement Wednesday, "not the woman who shot him multiple times. Anyone who ever knew Ryan knows her claims of self-defense are absurd."

Poston, a lawyer, and Hubers, a former University of Kentucky student, had been dating at least a year. Those who knew the couple have described their relationship as "off and on" and "tumultuous," according to Cincinnati.com

Postin was a lawyer who had launched his own practice in May, focusing on personal injury cases.

Hubers, a former University of Kentucky student, has remained jailed since the incident. Her bond is currently set to $5 million, according to the Kentucky Post.

Her friends say they are shocked by the incident. "She was quiet, she was always smarter than we were," a former high school classmate told WKYT. "She's a sweet girl."

Personally I'm not buying the whole "he beat me" bullshit. You don't shoot the guy attacking you multiple times then watch him bleed to death before deciding to call the fucking police. I think she concocted the story when she realized that she'd killed him and spent those 15 minutes trying to make herself look as crap as possible so it would match the bullshit she was spewing from her mouth.

Here's the thing for me..she waited until he stopped breathing before she called for help. That doesn't sound like self-defense to me.

For any woman who has ever been raped or abused by a partner who is supposed to love them. I doubt anybody in that position could hold their hands up and say they hadn't considered homicide at some point. Look at the age difference, look at the possible degree of control. I Think she finally fought back but is possibly too ashamed to admit what he did to her, and probably still in shock too, probably grieving and trying to protect him still. So maybe revenge rather than self defence, but seriously guys, unless she's completely nutty, I think maybe She did the world a favour.

For some reason the article says Highland Heights, Ohio when this was in Highland Heights, Kentucky (just across the river from Cincinnati). I've heard lots of rumblings from both sides on this one... the neighbors I've heard from said it was only a matter of time and were unsurprised... although those same neighbors were home at the time and were the only neighbors not to hear the gunfire so I'm not sure how reliable they are. I'm wondering why they keep increasing her bond... I think they've raised it 3 times now.

I have first hand knowledge of the crime being a friend of Ryan's Mother and have been privy to details not yet reported in the press. First and foremost--Ryan was a gentle person who came from a very good family--he was trying to end the "relationship" which in itself is a stretch more like a twisted friendship with this young lady who had been stalking him--she had an obsession with the man. He wasn't an abuser, rapist, mysogynist he was just a fellow who was having a difficult time being "mean" in order to break ties with woman. His Mother had been worried about this woman's compulsive attachment to her son for a while, she thought the Girl may maim herself . Irony--it probably all boiled down to in Shayna's Mind--"If I can't have you no one can". She saw her future , one she concocted up in her mind evaporate--good looking upwardly mobile lawyer husband,money, big house ,fancy cars , jewels. This was cold bloodied calculated murder for justice to be served she can rot in prison or hang from the gallows for all we care.

@montegue, generally we don;t believe people who come in here to comment on a post that they claim to have "first hand knowledge." You, on the other hand, I believe. I'm just not buying into her story. I hope the jury doesn't either.

Montegue I'm sorry for Ryan's families lost and as I expressed at the beginning of this thread I wholly believe that Shayna is not telling the truth about what happened that night. While no-one can say for certain that her claims aren't true because a part from she and Ryan there are no witnesses to what happened that night and unfortunately Ryan can't speak for himself I'm confident that all is not right in this case and a majority of people agree with me on that.

A comment on the age difference; these two where consenting adults and I have never seen anything wrong with this kind of relationship, a lot of women I know are attracted to older men because of the stability that they bring. Most of us, in a normal situation, probably wouldn't even bat an eyelash at their ages but as soon as something terrible happens its brought into focus as a possible proof that the man was some terrible pervert who preyed on young girls.

Truthfully I've heard the rumors of Shayna's conversations with her neighbors and though I can't say with positivity that they are false it reminds me of how someone would manipulate a situation in an attempt to isolate someone else from all those around them.

Another thing that I've been wondering about is: these neighbors heard people yelling and then a gunshot and did nothing?

I appreciate you speaking out, but nobody really knows what goes on behind closed doors, I hope the truth comes out in his favour, but if you look around the site some of us comment on instinct, I mean no offence, I just put what I feel. @TheFirstZev I wasn't suggesting that he preyed on young girls, although I didn't notice anything saying when they got together? Younger ladies and older men generally work, because we Ladies are so much more advanced. I still think there is a huge opportunity for abuse of power there though, and none of us know what really happened.
