A man who was teased about his pants allegedly grabbed a wooden baseball bat and cracked it over another man’s head, splitting the bat in two.
Brian Curtis Paul, 26, of Grand Junction, surrendered Thursday afternoon at the Mesa County Jail on a warrant alleging attempted first-degree murder and felony menacing related to an alleged assault early Wednesday at a North Avenue home that hospitalized 21-year-old Timothy Stapleton.
Paul, Dietrich Bostelman, 23, Stapleton and a 16-year-old boy were on the front porch of a residence at 2957 North Ave. when Paul allegedly stormed inside the home, retrieved the wooden bat and swung at Stapleton, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Deputies were called around 1 a.m. Wednesday on a menacing report.
Two witnesses said Paul had been riding his motorcycle earlier and had spilled motor oil on his pants. The affidavit said the men had been drinking.
“(The 16-year-old) said Stapleton joked with the male that the stain looked like he urinated his pants,” the affidavit said.
An argument followed. Paul allegedly grabbed the bat from inside the home and hit Stapleton, who was sitting on a couch, in the head.
