Teen charged with hate crime in Cape Girardeau

A Cape Girardeau teen will face hate crime charges as an adult.
Mercedes Makeda Ayers, 17, faces third degree assault as a hate crime and burglary charges.
According to a probable cause statement, on July 24 the victim, Jeana Terry, says then 16-year-old Ayers yelled derogatory words at her about Terry's sexuality. The two are neighbors on South Park Street.
The statement says Ayers later came back to Terry's home uninvited, grabbed her after she opened the door and attacked by punching and kicking her.

A Cape Girardeau teenager was certified Tuesday to stand trial as an adult in the beating last month of a gay woman. Authorities are labeling the incident a hate crime.

According to the rather florid probable cause statement, 17-year-old Mercedes Ayers had been harassing victim Jeana Terry and her partner, Lisa Lange, for weeks, referring to her neighbors as "dykes" and "yaps" (a various of gays spelled backwards). And the kicker: On at least one occasion, Ayers allegedly yelled out at the couple referring to herself, saying:

"I'll bet black you want some of this black pussy!"

On July 24, Ayers allegedly saw Terry sitting near a window of her home and called out that she was going across the street to get her brother and then return to "beat her ass." Later that day Ayers allegedly walked up to the front door of Terry's home, grabbed Terry and pulled her outside onto the porch. Police say the teen then began punching Terry, who did not return blows. Other juveniles joined in on the attack, laughing as they struck Terry according to one media account.

Terry suffered a black eye and several bruises and abrasions in the incident. According to police accounts, Ayers ran from the scene but was quickly detained. She's charged with first-degree burglary and assault as a hate crime based on the sexual orientation

OMGOD reading this article reminds me of the experiences I went through as a fully open hispanic lesbian in high school! I feel very sorry for Ms Terry and her partner and I hope she does not become bitter towards anyone for this. I must tell about the times when I was fully open lesbian and going to an all black high school in Georgia! Oh there were some haters too! A woman slapped me in a locker room for "looking" at her. Maybe I was maybe I was not but if anyone could draw those invisible lines ooh. She was furious and I did not hit her back because when you are in groups its many against one. So I understand why she did not fight back. A black woman had asked me to come out in front of a bleacher of black girls during gym. I did like it was a natural reaction come out to a bleacher full of women when she asked me "Are you gay?" most booed some clapped. I never stopped admitting in life then or today but it was not a good climate for the time. Might still not be but it should be with all the activism going around.
