Would be Derry robber punched by victim

A would be robber who was punched in the face by his intended victim has been jailed for two years.

David Monteith, 24, whose address was c/o Maghaberry jail, was convicted of attempted robbery over the incident in Londonderry's Spencer Street.

At his trial in May, a jury heard he threatened a Bulgarian man with a bottle of vodka demanding he hand over his cash, phone and watch.

However, the victim punched him and took his vodka off him.

He ran off up Spencer Street pursued by a drunken Monteith, demanding the return of his vodka.

The jury heard he had only been released from prison having served a sentence for a similar robbery the previous day.

At Derry Crown Court sitting in Belfast, Judge Gordon Kerr QC ordered that Monteith spend two years in custody and two on licence, telling him he had a "bad record".
