Rodney McGee Calls Deputy Azor, Drug Dog, To Testify In Florida Court

Yet more proof dogs are alot smarter then some humans

Azor, a K9 drug dog, was called to testify when Rodney McGee attempted to challenge a traffic citation to which the doggy deputy was a witness.
This K9 cop sure does his due doggy diligence.

Azor, a doggy deputy who detects drugs in Florida, was issued a subpoena this week to testify about a February traffic stop. The defendant, Rodney McGee, called the canine on Thursday as part of his attempted defense on a citation for failing to use his turn signal, WINK News reported.

"I was hoping that they would let me plant marijuana in the courthouse to see if he could find drugs," McGee told the station.

Deputy Azor was subpoenaed because he was used to sniff for drugs in McGee's car during the traffic stop, but didn't find any.

    [...]
The doggy deputy's supervisor told The Huffington Post that the Belgian Tervuren is a dual-certified K9 cop who has been on the force for three years, working ond drug detection and trailing alongside his partner, Deputy Franko.

"I've been on the K9 force for 13 years now, and I've never had a dog called in before," said Sgt. John Heck of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Department. "Azor has been in court before when there may be high-risk prisoners or something, so he wasn't uncomfortable in that setting, but we've definitely never had this happen."

McGee's theatrical move did not sway Judge Peter Bell and he was still fined $300 for failure to signal.

As one poster in a Massachusetts police forum noted, "Good thing the K-9 didn't have to take the stand, that would have been a RUFF cross-examination."

I had to read it aloud several times to make sure I was reading it right.

How was this supposed to help him defend against the charges of failing to use his turn signal?

Eh, don't forget, Sandra Anderson and her dog Eagle were pretty successful in court, until Anderson was caught planting evidence... I believe all her cases were reevaluated.

Scary. And one wonders how she put her hands on human remains with the relevant DNA! O.o

But this still does not explain how impeaching the pooch is going to get this gentleman out of a fine for not using his indicators. :-P

If I recall correctly, her friend was in forensics somehow and had an entire body in a freezer. It was legit, but I don;t recall WHY he was allowed to have it.

But this was supposedly related to cases? Surely they were comparing DNA from the "victim" to something else they had? And if the "finds" led to prosecution of someone........

Yeah. The one that led to her downfall... She was seen pulling a bone out of her shoe in an area Eagle had "signaled."
There was another case where she "found" a toe bone, and the guy's body WAS found... with all of his toes.
I saw her at a symposium once. There is no doubt in my mind Eagle COULD do these things, but the fame got to her head. She was highly sought after. There were many cases she could produce results.
Blah, now I NEED to go look up hom many cases were reviewed after her conviction... Not your fault, just a review.
Also, come to think of it, she couldn't go to prison because her mom had cancer... until her mother told the court she did NOT have cancer.
