Should We Even Bother Being Helpful Anymore?

A good samaritan attempted to return a lost iPhone and was instead assaulted. What is wrong with this picture?

This is why we can’t have good things.

A 53-year-old woman in Fredericksburg, VA was just minding her own business when she spotted an unclaimed iPhone near a 7-Eleven convenience store on Lafayette Boulevard, reports NBC Washington.

As any good samaritan would attempt (seriously, there isn’t enough people who will do what she did), she tried to contact the phone’s rightful owners to return the lost device.

At the meet up point near where the iPhone was originally found, the woman gave the item back to the couple who claimed to own the phone and was offered a cash reward. After the transaction was completed, however, the male owner attacked the woman from behind before stealing the money back and fleeing the area.

“The victim was walking away when the male grabbed her from behind and threw her to the ground,” NBC Washington reports. “He took the money back and kicked her while she was still on the ground…
The male and female iPhone owners left the area in a gold Honda Accord.”

While the incident is still under police investigation, what everyone wants to know is why the owners would do such a thing? Did the woman steal any intellectual property stored inside the phone or tampered with it in any way? Unless we’re missing half of the story, it did not seem like the woman returning the phone sought monetary reward. The cash offered was reportedly “small,” so assaulting a 53-year-old woman to get it back seemed highly unreasonable especially after she just gave back what could have earned her more than what she received as “reward.” The possibility of the situation being staged as a scam also seems unlikely, since the owners would have stolen back their own money each time a meeting is arranged with new strangers.

We previously reported that less than half of lost phones ever make it back to their owners, and now it seems that not only do people purposely steal them, returning the also poses a dangerous situation. You just can’t win in this sick, sad world.

In the meantime, don’t let this discourage you from being a do-gooder. If you ever come across a lost item that you want to return, arrange a meeting in a public and brightly lit location. You can also bring along a friend in case anything goes wrong. Accept cash reward at your own discretion — you would rather be safe than a couple bucks richer for doing something right? right?

Personally, Ill just turn a lost phone over to the police, may have child, doggie or insect porn on it...

    I would've just given it to 7-11.
I did my part, now I can go on with my day.
If I see someone stuck on the road, I call police - I don't get out & help.

And sadly, that's what the world has become. We're a fear based society these days & I go right along with it.

Co-sign that. We are a fear based society and I too would have turned it in to the store and went on my way. Actually, my paranoia probably would have thought 'set up'. While I believe we should help others, And I try, but only in a limited way. I would never agree to a 'meet up'. That was just stupid on her part. And I too would just call the police if I see someone stranded. Not stopping. Sorry, and I really just hope if i'm ever stranded, someone just calls and doesn't stop.

I would have and have done what the lady did. My husband got his phone back the same way. This story is quite unfortunate and I do hope that the woman is ok and this hasn't ruined her good nature but it has not convinced me to stop being the kind of person that I am.

One thing that I would have done differently though is I would have had them meet me at the police station to pick it up. That's how I do my craigslist purchases.

Me too. I have left my phone behind at the market. One time someone found it and called and checked my contacts, there they found my home #, and called me. This is a whole lotta of crazy.

Never had insect porn as an image in my head before!!!! Eeeeeeew. Have to say if any of us/my lot found a phone we probably would try and reunite it with the owner than see it wind up in a police auction/pocket. Think I've been scarred for life with images of cricket sex, lol.

I have to believe things are as not as bad as we read.
People do kind and wonderful things for each other in untold nubers on all levels. People feel good for doing the right thing and people feel good when they are the recipeient of a kind gesture from a stranger.
The only reason you see this kind of news is because it sells. It is also a barometer of how rare this is. If it happened all the time it wouldn't be news.

I make it a point to never help anyone. Even my friends know I'm only a fair weather friend and not to expect much. Don't ask me for money, for a ride, to help you move. I don't exploit people but I don't help them much either. I'm for minding my own business. Don't make your problems my problems.

Honestly I think the world we be a better place without do gooders. They always end up with their ass in a crack because they stuck their neck out to help someone.

You are so right about that, I help people and always end up fucked by the ungrateful bastards, they seem to think they are entitled and everyone owes them...

I agree. But it would be my luck to be in that 1%. So again, if I see you stranded, I will call the cops for you, if I see a lost whatever, i'll turn it in. But again, meeting a stranger to give it back? Nope. And I do do nice things for strangers, I'll pay a toll for the person behind me, I've actually paid for coffee for someone at Starbucks, I give money to the homeless person on the street, I just am careful to make sure there are other people around when I go to hand it to him.

I do agree but then...I come here & this site tells me ""nonononono!! It's scary out there, don' beleive you're safe! Eye-ball eating, pitbull toting, chil-molesting-idiots will come for you!!!!!"

I may be a paranoid freak (totally sequre being this BTW), but I have to stay alive until my kids are grown. And THEN...I want to go have fun while they're being paranoid young-adults because I transferred that on to them. Oops. Oh well, while they're locking their doors i"ll be traveling the WORLLLLLLD!
