HOUSTON—A man has been accused of tying up his son with nylon rope and kicking, punching and beating him with a belt.

Baburam Kharel, 47, has been charged with injury to a child. He has been released on a $10,000 bond.

On February 13, 2012, Kharel and his brother Gopal Kahrel tied up Baburam’s son and beat him with their hands, feet and a belt at their home on the 5400 block of Chimney Rock, according to police.

The next day, the son told his school counselor that he had been beaten by his father and he was sent to Texas Children’s Hospital where a doctor examined him further. He was covered in bruises all over his body, including his wrists, ankles, legs and back, according to investigators.

The boy told police he had run away from home on February 10 because he is afraid of his father and fears being beaten and spent several nights on the streets. He had returned home on February 13 when his father and uncle allegedly tied him up.

He also said that his father frequently beats him with the belt and other objects, including a metal chair and sticks.

Police also spoke with the boy’s mother, Sharada Kharel, who confirmed that her husband had been emotionally and physically abusing them both for years.

She allegedly witnessed the February 13 beating, which she reports took place for an hour, but could not intervene because she feared retribution from her husband and brother-in-law. She now has a 60-day protective order against him.

The child and his 5-year-old and 11-year-old sisters are now in CPS custody
