Steven Cole Shot Daschund Defecating In His Yard

Prosecutors say a Kent man intentionally shot his neighbor’s 7-pound Miniature Daschund after the dog defecated in his yard.

According to court documents, Steven Cole, 49, fired a high-powered pellet rifle from his front window on March 31, breaking Zeus’ right front leg. Cole allegedly admitted to a King County sheriff’s deputy that he owned the rifle with scope, which he used to shoot rabbits on his property.

Cole said he saw the dog “crapping” on his property and admitted to aiming at the dog’s body when he shot it, according to the probable cause statement.
    [...]
Zeus’ owner, Carrie Hamilton, told the deputy she saw the dog headed towards Cole's property and called him back. She said she turned away for a moment, then heard a "pop," then Zeus yelping. She told the deputy she then saw Cole in the front window, laughing after the shooting.
X-rays show Zeus’ leg was fractured in several places.

Hamilton admitted she and Cole had issues in the past regarding her dogs. Court documents indicate a complaint was made last summer about Hamilton’s German Shepherd trespassing and threatening Lisa Cole.

First degree animal cruelty is a Class C felony, which is punishable by five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both if convicted. Cole could also be banned from owning animals.

Steven Cole Accused of Shooting Miniature Dachshund for 'Crapping' in his Yard Then Laughing at it
    [...]
An account of the alleged act of animal cruelty included in charging documents submitted by David Morris, an animal cruelty investigator with Regional Animals Services of King County, provides the following details:

Authorities contend that on March 31 of this year Dachshund owner Carrie Hamilton was planting a tree in her family's front yard with her children and dog when things took a turn for the worse. The family's seven-year-old miniature dachshund, Zeus, started heading for Cole's property - where charging documents note Cole's Siberian Husky and German Shepherd were confined to his yard with an invisible fence - when Hamilton attempted to call him back. Apparently Zeus didn't listen.

Charging documents indicate Hamilton "turned away for about 2 seconds and heard a pop and Zeus yelping." In a subsequent discussion with a responding King County Sheriff's Office deputy, Hamilton admitted that she and Cole had had "dog issues" in the past.

Zeus had been shot in the leg - an attack that resulted in the dog fracturing its leg in several places. According to charging documents, Cole was less than concerned.

    From charging documents:
She turned toward the yelping and saw her dog about two feet off of the easement separating her property from Cole's, holding its right front paw up. She looked toward the Cole house and saw Cole in the front window laughing.

Charging documents also contend that when interviewed by the responding King County Sheriff's Office deputy, Cole admitted owning the high-powered pellet gun - which was accessorized with a scope and which Cole said he used to shoot rabbits on his property.

    From charging documents:

Cole said he saw Hamilton's dog "crapping" on his property and admitted to shooting the dog. He said he was tired of asking the Hamiltons their dog of his property. Cole admitted that he was aiming for the body of the dog when he was aiming for the body of the dog when he shot it.

Charging documents contend that given the fact Cole used the pellet gun to shoot rabbits on his property, he was well aware of its "lethal power to small animals." Authorities also argue that the fact Cole admitted to aiming for Zeus' body shows he fired his shot with "intent to kill the dog."

The responding King County Sheriff's deputy noted: "If Steven had hit the dog in the body I feel it would have severely injured or killed the dog."

Charging documents also note an August, 2011 complaint with Regional Animals Services of King County in which Cole's German Shepherd allegedly trespassed on Hamilton's property. Authorities contend this event proves Cole was familiar with the process of making a complaint with Regional Animals Services, and therefore was even more out of line in shooting Zeus.

While it may seem like it goes without saying, charging documents note that Zeus, a "7.5 pound miniature dachshund posed no threat to Cole, his property or his dogs."

The King County Prosecutor's Office says Cole is scheduled to be arraigned May 24 at the Regional Justice Center in Kent.

I had this prob with a neighbor I have named Bob The Knob b.c he let his little dog run and shit all over everyones yard
Not to mention we live on busiest street in the city
I finally gathered it all up and watered it a bit and tossed it all over his front porch and brand new truck
A guy behind me took another route and beat the fuck outta Knob b/c hes a weasily little turd
Needless to say the dog no longer runs and shits all over
Bottom line is its not the dogs fault its the neighbors that think they can do whatever they fucking want

it might be the owner's fault, but there's NO cause to go after the dog.
When we still lived in our house, there was a cat that lived across the street from us.. the owner would let it out, and it would come and shit in our flower bed, and our tree pots. I called animal control.. Cat disappeared, end of problem..
IF he was that annoyed by the dog 'crapping' on his lawn then why in the hell didn't he just call animal control and have the dog picked up? If the owner isn't responsible enough to ensure it doesn't leave shit on someone else's lawn, they shouldn't have the animal... I do think the dog owner should've been given a stiff fine for all the times the property owner's property. I'm just sad for the dog.. Dog's shit.. they eat, sleep, shit, piss and play... and sometimes hunt... We have a small dog.. she's 8lbs even... when she is outside of the apartment, she is ALWAYS either on her leash or in her carrier. When she drops her load, it' immediately cleaned up.. We don't leave it for anyone else to worry about.. The reason is, she's our dog, our responsibility...

I am paranoid when my dog's outside that it's gonna run away free to chase a CAT AT LARGE or someone walking their dog. I always tie her down to my deck or any place so that we can all be outside & she doesn't get run over or runs away.

As much as I hate the smell of my dog's shit, I feel proud (and grossed out) when I bend down & pick it up with a bag & then finish the walk with that damned shitty bag. It shows I respect others & their property & I don't want anyone to step on my dog's shit. It also says that I EXPECT PEOPLE TO DO THE SAME FOR ME.

You sure have to be a messed-up human being to hurt a dog for doing something biologically necessary in a place it has no reason to think it isn't allowed to do that.

You know, the problem of your neighbor's dog constantly shitting in your yard is pretty easily solved without facing criminal charges. All you need is an intense laser pointer, a dark/overcast day or dusk, and the patience to wait for a passing car on the street at sufficient speed...

I hate to say it, but if you have an errant dog in the country and he is pestering neighbors/ livestock, eating your chickens or crapping in your yard, chances are that dog will disappear.
A Daschund in the city is a little different. That guy was just cruel. He should have used a crossbow so it would be painless.

We have leash laws. I wouldn't tolerate a neighbor's dog crapping in my yard because I have small kids. So yeah, your dog on my property, causing issues? I deal with issues. One way or another. I am not a fan of dogs to begin with, because they can cause so much damage.
