Of all the parking lots, in all the towns, in all the world, he drove into the one lot belonging to the Sheriff.
Peter Thomas Makela, 35, of Gainesville, lost control of his Tacoma and then struck a parked car, a light pole and a street sign before making a right turn into a parking lot in Jacksonville, according to an arrest affidavit from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Big problem for Makela: He turned right into the rear parking lot of the police memorial Building in Jacksonville — part of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Makela was greeted by one of the Sheriff's security officers, who promptly called for assistance.
When another officer arrived and asked him if he had hit anything, Makela stated he thought he had hit a parking meter, according to the affidavit.
Wrong.
Clue:
The top of the light pole was in the bed of his truck.
When asked where he was coming from, Makela 'fessed up and stated he was drinking at the Florida Theatre, as well as the bar across the street from the theater. The officer noted that Makela had all the usual signs of impairment such as bloodshot eyes and booze on his breath, the affidavit states.
Makela allegedly uttered something like "you're gonna put a DUI on me" to the officer.
