MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A 20-year-old man is in Mesa police custody on suspicion of trying to kill his grandmother with a hammer, burglarizing her home and taking her car.
Terry Seely was arrested Saturday evening and booked into jail after his grandfather found Ruth Baxley in a bedroom with severe head injuries, according to a Mesa Police Department spokesman.
Police said Seely told them went to his grandparents' home just before noon Saturday to apologize for his recent behavior.
He was confronted by his grandfather, who was on his way to a doctor's appointment, and told him to leave the home, the spokesman said. Seely and his grandfather left at the same time, but Seely circled the block and returned to the home.
He came in through the back door, grabbed a hammer and struck Baxley in the head three times, police said.
Seely's grandfather returned to the home around 1 p.m. to find the Baxley's car missing before finding her bloodied in the bedroom, according to police
Seely told police he left his grandmother to die and took the car and a jewelry box, speakers, credit cards, iPad and other items from her house to sell.

Seely was booked into jail on the following charges: •Attempted second-degree murder
•First-degree trafficking in stolen property
•Two counts of aggravated assault
•Second-degree burglary
•Theft of a means of transportation
•Two counts of drug possession
•One count of possessing drug paraphernalia
Baxley was hospitalized in critical condition with a skull fracture and bleeding on the brain, which required surgery.
