MANATEE -- A Bradenton man was charged Tuesday with killing his wife in their Bayshore Gardens home.

Nicholas Hartmann, 39, was arrested and charged with murder after he arrived home while deputies were investigating Alisa June Hartmann's death.

The 38-year-old's body was found by an acquaintance who was dropping off her children at the victim's home in the 2100 block of Harvard Avenue, said Dave Bristow, sheriff's office spokesman. When no one answered the door, the acquaintance entered the home, found Hartmann's body in one of the bedrooms and called 911.

Deputies responded to the call at about 11:45 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the sheriff's office investigated, neighbors said Nicholas Hartmann recklessly drove his truck down the street and parked in front of the house.

"He actually was drinking a beer," Bristow said. "We don't know if he was intoxicated or not, but he was upset obviously, and just made some spontaneous statements. And we immediately at that time took him into custody because we had probable cause."

Bristow said detectives will continue questioning Hartmann to determine what may have led to his wife's death.

"He will be charged with homicide and we're treating it as a murder now," Bristow said.

Evidence from the crime scene will also be processed, he said.

Neighbors stood by in shock, some crying, as they learned of the woman's death. Many were questioned by deputies.

"I don't know what was running through his mind," said neighbor Merle Davis. "He's got the kids. I just can't believe something like this would happen this close."

Neighbors said the couple always appeared friendly. And while the family may have had disagreements, it was never anything out of the ordinary.

Bristow said a preliminary check reported no previous calls at the address.

"We go on dozens of domestics each week," Bristow said. "Fortunately, hardly any of them end up like this. Every now and then we have a domestic homicide. It's tragic."

Although he confirmed "there is some trauma to the body," Bristow said the cause of death would not be released until an autopsy is completed.

The couple have two children who are now under the care of child protective services.

Hartmann has no other felonies on his record, according to court records. He was set to make his first court appearance this morning. .

Sheriff: Bradenton murder suspect used baseball bat to kill his sleeping wife

MANATEE -- Nicholas Hartmann allegedly struck his wife repeatedly with an aluminum baseball bat Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of Alisa June Hartmann, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies found the 38-year-old's body in her Bayshore Gardens Home Tuesday morning.

Nicholas Hartmann is charged with murder. He is being held at the Manatee County jail without bond.

According to a probable cause affidavit from the sheriff's office, Nicholas Hartmann arrived home from work at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. He allegedly approached his sleeping wife while armed with an aluminum baseball bat and struck the victim's head multiple times.

Hartmann left the scene and went back to work, detectives say.

The victim's body was discovered by an acquaintance who was dropping her children off for Alisa Hartmann to baby-sit, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies responded to the acquaintance's 911 call at about 11:45 a.m.

Hartmann was found dead in the master bedroom when deputies arrived.

Sheriff: Knife placed in homicide victim Alisa Hartmann's hand after death

MANATEE -- Someone placed a knife into the hand of Alisa Hartmann after she was beaten to death with a baseball bat earlier this week, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators would not say whom they believe placed the knife in her hand. Hartmann's husband, Nicholas Hartmann, has been charged with murder in the case.

An acquaintance, who spoke with Hartmann at 9:06 a.m., arrived at the Hartmann's home on the 2100 block of Harvard Avenue in the Bayshore Gardens neighborhood at 11:38 a.m. to drop off her kids. According to family friends, Hartmann provided childcare for several families in the community.

They were in love and ANYONE who knew them both will tell you..... this was just SOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOO WAY WAY WAY out of character. I grew with both of them. they were high school sweethearts and they have 2 children. There was no major issues in the family that anyone can speak of or anything that anyone can say looking back, was a sign of something wrong... You really need to THINK before you SPEAK!!!!!!!
I would have NEVER EVER EVER THOUGHT THIS of him or her being killed by him.... NOONE DID!!!!!!!!!!!! There is something that happened with him and i'm sure it didn't have anything to do with her..... They have been everything to each other and he was the all american husband... cookouts, friendly with neighbors, they went out on couple outings with other couples. They both were very friendly people. If there was something, then everyone would NOT have allowed her to watch their children like she did. people wouldn't want to put children in an environment where there is potential for harm.
