Andrew Hernandez Abused, Stole $20k From Grandmother

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Fairfield man was arrested on charges that he physically and emotionally abused his elderly grandmother, as well as stole $20,000 from her bank accounts.

31-year-old Andrew Hernandez was arrested and charged with third degree larceny, third degree assault on an elderly person, threatening and breach of peace.

The investigation began when a worker at Peoples United Bank contacted police for a welfare check. The worker told police over $20,000 had been taken from the 82-year-old woman's account over the course of five months by her grandson.

Police say Hernandez stole his grandmother's checkbook, forged and cashed checks worth over $20,000 from her bank account and hid her bank statements from her.

Officers also determined Hernandez, who lived with his grandmother, was abusing her. Hernandez is accused of assaulting his grandmother by pushing a shopping cart into her and knocking her into the wall of a Stop & Shop.

Police also say Hernandez took his grandmothers car without her permission and forced her to walk to a friend's house. When Hernandez was arrested, the car was returned.
