Mother Calls Children Back From Neighbor’s House To Shoot Them – Five Dead

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office said Tanya Thomas, 33, shot and killed her two daughters, 17-year-old Pebbles Johnson and 13-year-old Jazlin Johnson, and her two sons, 15-year-old Jaxs Johnson and 12-year-old Joel Johnson.

Brevard County sheriff's Lt. Tod Goodyear said three of the children went to a neighbor's house to say their mother had shot them. The mother then called the children back to the house and shot them again, killing them, investigators said.

The neighbors called 911 just before 5 a.m. and deputies found Pebbles Johnson dead in the front yard of the home at 7245 Bright Avenue.

Deputies then spotted someone at the door, likely Thomas, and called the SWAT team, who later entered the home and found four people dead.

"We have no idea on motive right now," Goodyear said.

The father of the children lives elsewhere in Brevard County and was very distraught upon hearing the news, Goodyear said.

More than a dozen deputies and SWAT team members had converged on the home and the neighborhood was cordoned off during the investigation.

I don't understand, did the neighbor just allow them to toodle on back home knowing that the mother had already shot/shot at them at least once?

The neighbors are probably deaf, drunk, drugged, or mentally challenged. I have a hard time with any other reason.

"What's that? Your momma shot you? Well, I hear her calling so you better run along."

"And quit dripping blood on my porch! Damn kids!!"

Post Mother Calls Children Back From Neighbor’s House To Shoot Them – Five Dead

Port St. John, FL — A Florida mother shot and killed her four kids before killing herself. This after she called three of the kids who had sought help from a neighbor back into the house.
Police say Tonya Thomas, 33, fatally shot her four children early Tuesday morning. Deputies identified the children as Pebbles Johnson, 17 (pictured); Jaxs Johnson, 15; Jazlin Johnson, 13; and Joel Johnson, 12.*Three of the children had reportedly gone to a neighbor’s front door before dawn to say that their mother had shot them. The mother then called the children back to the house and killed them, said Lt. Tod Goodyear, a spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
“From what the neighbors said, she was very calm. She walked out and called them back. They turned around and walked back to the house,” Goodyear said.
The neighbor then heard gunshots and called 911.
According to police, another neighbor said that Thomas had sent a text message in the middle of the night saying she wanted to be cremated with her children.
“[The neighbor] didn’t see the text until he woke up this morning,” Goodyear said.
DCFS didn’t comment on whether the family had a history with the agency but Goodyear said deputies had responded to the house for domestic complaints previously.…

Tonya Thomas murdered her four children and then killed herself

Florida Woman Kills 4 Children and Then Herself, Police Say
A Florida woman killed her four children at the family's home in Port St. John, Fla., on Tuesday before killing herself, the authorities said.

Lt. Tod Goodyear, a spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, said that at one point during the early morning, three of the woman's children had gone to a neighbor's house to say that their mother had shot them. The authorities identified her as Tonya Thomas. The children were identified as Pebbles Johnson, 17; Jaxs Johnson, 15; Jazlin Johnson, 13; and Joel Johnson, 12.

Lieutenant Goodyear said at a news conference that the authorities had received a 911 call from a neighbor of Ms. Thomas at 4:50 a.m. The neighbor reported having heard gun shots from Ms. Thomas's home followed by a knock on her door. The neighbor, whom the authorities have not identified, said that when she opened the door, three of Ms. Thomas' children were on the door step.

"They did appear to be shot," Lieutenant Goodyear said. He did not describe the injuries.

Moments later, the neighbor said, Ms. Thomas, 33, emerged from her house and called her children to come back home. As the children were walking home, the neighbor called 911. Moments later, the neighbor told the authorities that she heard several more gunshots.

Sheriff's deputies, who arrived within four minutes of the call, heard additional gunshots, Lieutenant Goodyear said. A few minutes later, deputies saw someone who may have been armed with a gun open the front door before going back inside.

About 30 minutes later, there was a final shot, Lieutenant Goodyear said.

Shortly after, a special weapons team entered the house and found three children and Ms. Thomas, who the authorities said had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The body of a fourth child, who had also been shot, was found in the front yard.

Lieutenant Goodyear said there had been other calls to 911 related to incidents at the house, the most recent on Easter. He did not describe the nature of the calls.

    Court records reveal tumultuous household
Documents show mom struggled with an unruly 15-year-old
Court records portray 33-year-old Tonya Shantez Thomas as a woman who struggled to control her 15-year-old son Jaxs Johnson, including one incident in which she told police the boy kicked her and threw her to the floor after she tried to wake him for school.

The teen was to appear in juvenile court on a battery charge in that case Tuesday morning but was shot to death just hours before.

Brevard County sheriff’s agents say they are reviewing past incidents of family violence as they investigate Thomas’ apparent slaying of her four children early Tuesday in their Port St. John home.

Ten years ago, Thomas was charged with assaulting the father of her children. This year, the former bank teller who has worked in human resources at Renco Electronics since 2009 called deputies for help with a son who was suspected of beating her, records show.

Thomas, who moved from Cocoa to Port St. John in 2008, called Brevard County sheriff’s deputies to her home Easter Sunday to report Jaxs had thrown a bicycle through a window. Deputies responded but could not find the boy, who walked off threatening to attack his mother, according to police records.

Thomas told deputies that she wanted her son to “calm down before returning home,” reports show. She also told police about her efforts to get the teen into social programs to “help with his issues.”
    [...]

Thomas told deputies she was trying to wake Jaxs up for school when he kicked and punched her, records show. She said she then pushed back and both fell to the floor. She also grabbed his leg to stop him from kicking her, but the teen punched her several times in the ribs, according to records. The teen was arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge and was set to appear in court Tuesday.

The Department of Children and Families also was involved with the family, responding to the home after questions about whether the children were adequately supervised. DCF records indicate a child from the home, whom they would not identify Tuesday, was released from a juvenile detention facility, but no parent came to pick the child up. DCF investigators later reported the issue was resolved.

Relatives characterized Jaxs as a typical teen going through growing pains.

“He was a very young man but she was having problems with him, but then we all have problems with teens,” said Lola Merrick, Thomas’ cousin.

In 2002, Thomas was charged with battery. Deputies said she struck and scratched Joe Johnson, the father of her children and a former roommate. Deputies say she chased Johnson into the road and kicked him. Records do not indicate what started the fight and the state did not file formal charges.

In 1997, the couple was embroiled in a case in which the state was seeking child support from the father, a lawn care worker.

Experts: Moms who kill kids often love
Stressors, lack of support can provoke 'extended suicide'
Unfathomable to most parents, Tonya Thomas may have believed she was acting out of love when she allegedly shot and killed her four children early Tuesday morning, say experts who have researched mothers who kill their children.

But it’s often a complex mix of motivations and stressors that lead a mother to kill.

“There’s no single precipitant,” said Phillip Resnick, a professor of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio who started studying “maternal filicide” in the late 1960s. He was a consultant in high-profile cases such as Susan Smith and Andrea Yates, who both drowned their children.

Resnick said Tuesday’s shootings in Port St. John appear to be “altruistic filicide” — where a mother believes death is in the child’s best interest.

“It’s a murder out of love rather than a murder out of hate,” he said of how the killer might be thinking about what’s happening. “It becomes an extended suicide.”
    [...]

It’s often a “perfect storm” of issues that leads mothers to kill their children, said Cheryl Meyer, a professor of psychology at Wright State University in Ohio, who has co-authored two books about mothers who killed their children.

Often, these mothers at some point struggled with mental health issues and also are struggling with some sort of loss, whether it be a death, divorce or separation.

And they have either lost their social support network — friends and family whom they can rely on for help — or feel as if it is gone, Meyer said.

“They just don’t have anywhere to turn. That was (the situation) in every case,” she said.

Typically these women are described as “good moms,” and see their children as an extension of themselves, Meyer said. So when they decided to kill themselves, they fear who will take care of their children after they are gone or see death as a better option than leaving them without a mother.

“It’s not vindictive. It’s ‘I can’t leave this life leaving parts of me behind,’ ” she said.

What’s unusual about the Port St. John case is the age of the Johnson children — all were teenagers or nearing that age.

More often, children killed by their mothers are younger, experts said. Meyer points to mothers finding some respite from the stresses once their children go to school; Resnick said struggling mothers see older children as better able to cope with life without them.

It’s also not typical for women to use firearms to kill their children, in part because younger children can be killed by suffocation, drowning or overdose where a weapon is more likely needed to kill an older child, Resnick said.

Yet, many questions about why this happened may go unanswered, Meyer said. Unlike the Smith and Yates cases, there won’t be a prolonged trial or psychological analysis.

“We won’t be vilifying the mother,” she said. “Generally, the public thinks of them as mad or bad. They are either crazy or evil.”

Such accusations don’t help, even though it may be the easiest way for the public to handle a situation that for some “is too close to home,” Meyer said.

“This is scary stuff. It’s scary stuff because I don’t know very many mothers who don’t have conflict,” she said.

I was thinking the same thing-- my first thought was, "damn those kids are well-behaved!" I had a screaming match with my 16yo 2 days ago and he didn't come in the house (we have a workshop with tv & furniture etc) til about 3am this morning-- imagine had I shot at him-- he sure as hell wouldn't come in if I called him back.

I'm wondering if they went back due to loyalty to the 4th sibling or if that sibling was already dead when they went to the neighbor.

I'm wondering if the first one she shot wasn't the 15 year old boy. And then she just decided to take them all out. As for why they trooped home obediently, I have no clue, I know I wouldn't have gone back, and if they were at my door I would have made them come in my house and locked up. But it is possible that the neighbor was so taken by surprise that they didn't react quick enough before the kids took off for home.

If I was this neighbor I would feel so bad because all they had to do was call them into the house, Mama may have been crazy but don't think she would have been stupid enough to shoot up the neighbor's house, hopefully.

I think the children were the younger ones who went knocking at the neighbors door. Why they went back home, well don't know but my guess is they were in shock and hearing her "calm" voice maybe thinking it was over, didn't think she was actually calling to kill them.
So sad, terrible answer to stressors.

Typically these women are described as “good moms,” and see their children as an extension of themselves, Meyer said. So when they decided to kill themselves, they fear who will take care of their children after they are gone or see death as a better option than leaving them without a mother.

As much as I feel for a mother raising children alone, it's not enough to excuse such an act. It was an act out of love? Maybe to her, in her delusional state. but it wasn't. She murdered her children, they had no choice but to die. I don't see that as love. It's an act of desperation, an act of giving up an act of illness, selfishness, etc. . not love. I realize that might not be a popular thought but that's how I feel about it.
It may not help anyone who see's it that way but it is what it is. I won't hold anyone seeing it different. If it gets you through the days....

    Rest in peace,
Pebbles Johnson, Jaxs Johnson, Jazlin Johnson, and Joel Johnson.

    Confusion - Neighbor's 911 audio released:

The neighbors of a Florida woman who fatally shot her four children before committing suicide were confused initially about who had been shot when they opened their front door in the middle of the night to find three of the kids outside.

A 911 call released Wednesday shows that the neighbors weren't sure if 33-year-old Tonya Thomas had shot her children or if one of them had shot her.

Thomas called the children back to her house before the neighbors could help them.
    http://www.myfoxorlando.com/dpp/news...-mom-shot-kids

"I knew this was going to happen," a female neighbor tells the police dispatcher approximately 55 seconds into the call. "The boy is in our front lawn and he's got blood on his right side."

The neighbor also reports several instances of gunfire during the 911 dialogue.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1522694.html

Shortly before a mother killed her children on Tuesday, frantic neighbors called 911 to report that three of the frightened kids had tried to break into their house for refuge.

"They tried to break in our front door, I guess, to get away from her," the neighbor says in one of several calls released Wednesday.

The neighbor tried to help, deputies say, but Tonya Thomas coaxed her kids to return to their home on Bright Avenue in Port St. John.

Minutes later, "now there's more gunshots," the neighbor told a dispatcher. It was the sound, deputies say, of a mother murdering her children.

Brevard County deputies were just arriving at 4:54 a.m. Tuesday when they heard the shots that ended the lives of Joel, Jazzlyn and Jaxs Johnson. They were 12, 13 and 15. Deputies think Thomas shot Jaxs while he slept.

Their oldest sibling, 17-year-old Pebbles Johnson, was stretched out in the front yard motionless when deputies arrived. They drove onto the lawn and loaded her into the back of a deputy's cruiser, but by the time they could get her to paramedics waiting nearby, she was dead.

When deputies approached the home again just after 5 a.m., a person with a gun they later realized was Thomas came out but quickly turned and went back inside.

After killing all four of her children, Thomas shot herself to death at 5:26 a.m., said Lt. Tod Goodyear, a sheriff's spokesman.

Sure, she's saying the kid shot his mom, that one of the boys is in the yard with blood on his thigh, "he just shot our mom", and then the husband says the mother shot the son. Too much confusion. She also refused to let the kids in the house, so it could be the kids, being unclear enough to get her sympathy, returned to the mom because they weren't being offered shelter.

It seems unthinkable: A mother shoots one of her children. What happens next is even more unfathomable — three children who fled the house return to their homicidal mother.
All of them paid the price with their lives.
The Florida case of Tonya Thomas, who fatally shot her four children this week, then killed herself, is a rare category of tragedy, experts say. The children, ages 12 to 17, were older than most who are murdered by a parent. Thomas also used a gun, a weapon more likely found in the hands of fathers who kill.

Perhaps the most improbable fact in the story is that three of the children ran to a neighbors' home only to return to danger moments later at Thomas' command, when she beckoned the children to come home, researchers said.
"She knew what was going to happen when those young ones came back inside, and she was comfortable with that decision," said Mary Ellen O'Toole, a retired
FBI profiler who worked on many cases of family killings. "She couldn't deal anymore, but she couldn't deal without having the people she loved the most with her."

    [...]
Her children's decision to return home most likely means they were accustomed to seeing their mother act unstable and may have heard her threaten to kill them and herself several times before, O'Toole said.
"They didn't want their mom to be alone," she said. "There may have been some guilt, some loyalty and certainly fear there."
This one has been on my mind a lot. I've read similar cases, too many, but found this one particularly disturbing as her children returned to their homicidal mother as she called for them. I realize it is too simple to call her a monster, clearly she was very disturbed. The problems and history of domestic violence is only inpart the contributing factors. We all have problems, some much like this woman yet most of us would never consider killing our children.

Deep down into the psyche of Tonya Thomas, something went very wrong. The other factors just don't explain away why this happened if it did then a lot of mothers I know would be in danger of committing the same act. *shakes head*
Guess I'll have to accept things like this happen and will again. That's the hardest part on reading this horror.

If there is to be peace and attonment with this woman's soul, it will be between her and her maker. Rest in peace children.

Makes me fucking sick. Not entirely surprised though since older children would be putting up more of a fight. IF she had to die she should have taken her own ass out and left her babies alone. It was all their lives she stole. fuckin hell.

When I read this story the words sound so hollow. All the words are useless.

I know just how you feel. I stayed away from this thread because I was horrified, and my heart heavy for the kids. They were all beautiful kids, look at the smiles. This is not an act of love, I don't care who tries to make me believe that. Love doesn't end your life before it even begins...

Autopsy: Port St. John mother was drunk when she shot her children
    PORT ST. JOHN --
Autopsy results show a Port St. John mother was drunk when she shot and killed her four children.

Tanya Thomas shot her four children – Pebbles, Jaxs, Jazzlyn and Joel – on May 15 before turning the gun on herself.

The Brevard County Medical Examiner's report showed Thomas had a blood alcohol level of .16 percent, which is twice the legal limit for a person to be considered drunk.

A neighbor said three of the children knocked on the door around 5 a.m. that day when 33-year-old Thomas called them back home.

Moments later, the neighbor heard more gunfire and called 911

...Because the first set of gun shots wasn't enough to call 911... geezus.... At 5am, alot of people are disoriented. May explain the delay in calling 911 when you hear "BLASTING" going off next door and screams of children.... I equate what the children did to how an abused woman often responds ..she gets hit/threatened, runs in the bathroom, then the man says I'm sorry, I love you...and she opens the door....to get knocked the fuck out!!! The relationship? The innocense of the abused, their conditioning, and their true desire to just be loved by one they love...mix it with booze and a 5am wakeup and we have this tragic story of these children's deaths...sad.
