For an entire day, the body of a teenage girl was left inside an East Lake home while the man she had spent the night with and other residents in his home concocted a story to explain her death.

Carlos Juan Harrison then propped the girl's body up on a wicker love seat on the front porch before calling police, according to court records.

Harrison, 18, has been charged with criminal homicide after police questioned his family about the girl's death, which police discovered late Sunday night.

"It just hurts my heart to know she was in there," said Acacia Covington, whose home is directly across the street from the porch where the girl was found in the 3000 block of 12th Avenue. She watched Sunday night as investigators swarmed around the girl's body, which was still propped in the chair.

"As a mother, it just completely ruined my Mother's Day," she said. "It is tragic."

Harrison, his mother and other residents at the home originally told police the girl had approached the home Sunday evening and asked if she could sit on the porch. They said they came back out to the porch two hours later and she was dead, according to an affidavit filed in Hamilton County General Sessions Court.

But bruising on both sides of the girl's neck and dried blood from her nose or mouth made investigators pursue a second round of questioning, during which Harrison's mother decided she "wanted to tell the truth," the affidavit states.

She told police she had seen her son bring the girl into her home the night before, and that she had lied about that to cover up her son's involvement.

Harrison is out on bond on aggravated burglary and theft charges. His next court date was set for July 18.

Once police confronted Harrison with his mother's story, he admitted he had been with the girl the night before. Harrison told police they met late Saturday and that she agreed to stay over. The two had sex and fell asleep, he claimed in the affidavit.

When he woke, he found her lying unresponsive on the floor, he said.

Harrison told police he did not know what caused the injuries to her neck and face, and that she was unharmed when he moved her, the affidavit states.

I'm guessing mother's day will always suck now for the dead teen's mom too . I'm glad Harrison's mom finally told the truth , but I can't imagine trying to cover up a murder for her son . I get wanting to protect your child , but lying about a murder .

In this day and age, everything is ALWAYS someone else's fault, and how DARE you insinuate that these perfect angels could have had anything to do with it, and you're going to be SUED for SLANDER, etc etc, blah blah. *rolleyes* It's truly disgusting how kids are brought up to think they can do whatever and get away with whatever, and blame someone else for it all.

A Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s report shows that a 14-year-old girl who was found dead on the porch of a residence was brutally beaten.

Chelsea Ineasia Hayes died from blunt force trauma to her head and neck. The report documents ligature marks around her neck as well as two circular bruises near her throat. Diagrams also show that the beating resulted in brain hemorrhages in several places.

Hayes also sustained injuries to her genital area, according to the report.

Harrison's attorney suggests diabetes caused teen's death

The lawyer for an 18-year-old Chattanooga man charged in the rape and beating death of a 15-year-old girl argued Tuesday that injuries that caused her death could have come from a diabetic seizure.

Carlos Juan Harrison's charges of criminal homicide, tampering with evidence and aggravated rape were passed to the Hamilton County grand jury Tuesday after a preliminary hearing before Sessions Court Judge Christie Mahn Sell.

Police say that Harrison raped and beat Chelsea Hayes-Smith on the night of May 13, according to an arrest report. Smith was a freshman at Central High School.

But Harrison's attorney, Bill Speek, attempted to open up other explanations for the girl's death during the testimony of Hamilton County Medical Examiner Dr. James Metcalfe.

Metcalfe agreed there were no external signs of injury to Smith's head but pointed to marks on her neck, across her chest and near her kidneys. He'd written in his autopsy report that blunt force trauma to the head and neck were the causes of her death.

After the hearing, Speek said he thought that Metcalfe's evaluation supports his theory of the case against his client -- that the internal injuries were consistent with a seizure and a fall.

"I think we showed there was no sign of trauma to the exterior of the body," Speek said in reference to the head injuries.

But on the stand, Metcalfe didn't budge from his original decision that the injuries were caused intentionally. He described, in detail with a diagram, injuries to Smith's genital and anal areas consistent with penetration.

Harrison's mother, Twanna Mitchell, testified in Tuesday's hearing that Harrison and Smith came to her home about midnight on May 12 and visited with her and at least three friends. There were some details of the evening she did not remember because she'd drank nearly 48 beers throughout the day.

She said she went to sleep at 3 a.m. and didn't see Smith again until she found her body unresponsive on her front porch at 6 p.m.
